My inquiry about the 2018 race series on Governors Island was received well! @ChristinaWoolston & @Charlie Issendorf, can we meet soon to discuss?
That is awesome, John!

I suggest you take this offline,

Charlie's email is Charlie Issendorf < charlesissendorf@gmail.com > -- I would not assume that Charlie has the bandwidth to take on another race, chat with him first. Regardless, this is something you and Christina could take on.

You are likely to encounter some naysayers (like Myles, above) my best advice: ignore them.

Look forward to racing Governor's Island in 2018!

i will say hi to Charlie on Sat & introduce myself, thanks @eloy
YES! Feel free to PM me or email me offline.
Since we all know that if you don't Instagram it, it didn't happen,
Can anyone recommend a photo accessory to install on or around an iPhone (specifically an iPhone 5), so it's easier to pull the phone out of a jersey pocket and take a picture?

I just go fish it and take the picture.

But I presume something like this could make it easier.

I wasn't thinking of a lanyard, but more of a grip to hold and a tactile button to press without having to look for it.
The up volume already works as a button, a grippy case should do the trick

You can swipe from the lock screen to open the camera.

Thanks, but I knew that even before I got an iPhone.

Is this to document crazy stuff when you're riding around town?  Maybe a helmet mounted cam would be better suited for that.  Pretty decent generic action cams that can use GoPro accessories and mounts are really cheap now - like *well* under $100 cheap on sale.

Thanks for asking.

That would be cool, but no it isn't.

It's for my annual trip to InterBike.  I like how slim the iPhone is as a camera.  I hate that it's never as fast or easy to operate as a pocket digital camera, especially while riding--I can turn on, focus, and shoot a pocket camera using a single hand. But even just walking around, I feel the iPhone isn't as fast or easy.  As my pocket digital is dying, and is so old that the tech isn't as good as the iPhone, I figured I'd look into iPhone camera accessories to see if there's something that would make the phone easier to use as a camera.
Ah, got it.  I would personally just look for a lightly used Canon S100 (or S110) on ebay or CL (these can't be any more than $100 at this point).  These were basically the pinnacle of pocket point and shoots until phones became "good enough" for most people.  The mfgs then all shifted to promoting mirrorless ILC which were bigger than P&S cams, but smaller than DSLRs and took way nicer photos than any phone.

Also, your iPhone 5 is getting really long in the tooth (I should know, I still rock a rooted, vanilla Android Samsung Galaxy S4 that came out after yours and it desperately needs to be replaced).  Your phone is definitely slower than when it was new due to all the OS and app updates along with what I'm going to assume is limited memory/local storage on your device.

So if I were you:

A. If you're going to upgrade to a new phone soon, grin and bear it through Interbike with the 5.  Wait until the iPhone 8 is released and buy a 7 for way cheaper.  Or get the 8 if you feel so bold.  Both those phones will have vastly faster, snappier camera/apps than your current 5.

B1. If you need a working, dependable camera immediately and the 5 sucks so bad it is nearly unusable, buy a good P&S like the Canon S100 which should be relatively cheap.

B2. If you need a working, dependable camera immediately and the 5 sucks so bad it is nearly unusable, borrow a good P&S and wait to get a newer phone (7 or 8).

C. If the 5 works perfectly fine for you outside of the camera, I'd invest a little more money towards a dedicated camera suitable for what you want it to do (including if you ever want to use it to take snaps while on a bike).

I think I'll be looking into cameras then.

thanks.

Sprinter conversions are the shit.
As I was about to cross 5th ave at 59th Street, I saw an old guy trying to direct traffic on 5th.  It took a few seconds before I realized it was the tv newsman Charlie Rose.
