We did race at Governor's Island for a few seasons, last in 2009. That year it was one of my best races, this dude Kevin and I, dropped the field for most of the race, we got caught with 200 meters to go, which was good enough for top something or other. I remember the last lap and especially the last KM hurt like crazy.

Organize it, Christina, bring it back 2018.

Yes.  There was one probably eight years ago.  We raced a crit on the "far" end of the island.  There were two turns and a big sweeper.  The pavement between turns one and two sucked, seamed cement and stone, the rest was smooth asphalt.

It was fun.

I think it was all Charlie Issendorf.

doubt they'd go for it now, but if you have any recommendations of people to speak with, I'll happily pass it along.  We need more race venues.  

Charlie ran some races on Governor's Island shortly after it reopened to the public. It was a fun venue. I don't recall why it didn't continue

I loved that race, but Charlie couldn't make it work, the first two years he didn't have to pay for an additional ferry for the race, in 2010 he said it would cost somewhere around 10-15k to run the early AM ferry from downtown. So he couldn't make it work financially without charging astronomical entry fees. It was an awesome venue for a race.  

@Dan Reiners, that was just before the island underwent major capital improvements, I bet they would be more open to the idea nowadays. I can reach out to a few people on the island & see if they can accommodate. Funny, i was actually there (in 20yr old form) when one of the races was happening in 2010...i remember saying to myself that's the level i want to be riding at some point in my life haha

easy solution, don't have the race at 6am! problem solved.

@GregStreiff, the only thing is...the island gets very crowded from the first public boat at 9AM to noon. Would be much safer & they would be much more willing to accommodate before the crowds start showing up

also, there are many more options as far as docking goes than there was in 2010...we may be able to include an extra $10-$15 / rider in entry fees for a private boat charter there.

I've never organized anything at Governors Island with the exception of one film shoot a few years ago, but would be down to head up any sort of organization with it.

the ferry schedule and cost to get a non standard ferry up and running.
We need enough room for vehicles (timing equipment and officials) as well
as cyclists, at least 1 hr prior to race start

Way more than an hour before. You've got to hay bale the course, set up marshals, fences, etc.

But yeah - make it happen. It's NYC and anything is possible.
