Any number of things can cause spikes, interference from other HR Monitors, sympathetic vibrations from the front wheel, corroded contact points inside the monitor, battery spikes due to heat, awak airplane testing burst capabilities, shitty equipment.

Your segments show a pronounced and continued high range for your HR, however, which I haven't seen before.  Spikes are common, extended events like yours. . . I'm thinking your HR was calibrated in Metric.  Yeah, that's a joke, but. . . 

In the end, Accurate and Data don't go together.  Strava shows me that on occasion, I ride 68mph.  While I appreciate the nod to speed, that kind of speed would terrify me.  And most of my rides over the Manhattan bridge place me in the East River.

I use the data I receive as a guideline, knowing there are going to be spikes and drop-outs, and base my training on plans and, while training, take these numbers into account.  So if my HR spikes to 250, I can ignore it and continue my 160 hr workout.

It is, I think, a good reminder that we can get too caught up in what the data is telling us.  God forbid I forget my bike computer on a ride, but maybe I should leave it at home, now and again, so I'm just out riding my bike.

That's rough, @Wrongway.  Too bad we don't know anybody close to POC... some kind of local, I don't know...ambassador if you will.  Maybe some local pro who would be racing in all their accessories... available on group rides, and whatnot.

@Jules That is too bad... although I've heard talk of a renegade German pro, recently seen wearing the POC+Ritte silk scarf at Cannibal. Perhaps the club can reach out to this guy for a couple of $25 (plus S&H) Poc Ritte caps?
Seriously though, we could make a killing selling an all merino wool version of the Kissena kit in Japan (yes wool shorts).

hydrogen white?  nonsense.  the old "vaguely technical words combined with colors" gig.  wikipedia tells me hydrogen is colorless or purple when electrified.  lab rats please explain hydrogen's color and why POC might think it's white.  the resident artists tells me titanium dioxide would be the elemental white paint of choice.

I like those POC gloves.  Will go with my non-regulation white shoe covers I bought as I couldn't figure out the Champion System store! Sorry Jeff and Jules. Don't hate me.  Ain't nobody got time for that she'at.

So, I tried to be all clever and I bought this chain wear tool. It was only $5 and free shipping.  Good for me.  I thought I got a bargain.  It duly arrived and it works really good.  Problem is, now it's telling me to buy new chains!!  What was a $5 purchase has now spiralled out of control as I just bought 4 bicycle chains online.  Admittedly, not all 4 of my race bikes need new chains, but, on sale 10spd Ultegra chain for $25: bargain!

Lesson for the group: don't buy a chain wear tool.

$9.99 shipping or free if you spend over $99.  I figured I have a load of 10 speed bikes that will need chains replacing (thanks for that $5 chain wear tool) so bought because they were really cheap.
Use a ruler to measure chain stretch. 1/8" stretch over 12" means it's time. You don't really need to remember that each link is 1", just that that 12" corresponds to an integral number of links. So if you start at the center of a pin, you should end on the center of a pin after 12". If you have 1/8" stretch, see above URLs.

Change your chains regularly and your cassettes will last a long time. Use stretched chains and the pitch will no longer match the distance between teeth on your cassettes and chain rings. The teeth will become worn into a shark tooth shape. They will work fine until you get a new chain, and then they will skip (on the cassette) and make grinding noises (.On the chair rings). I find that smaller cogs (and chain rings) wear faster, presumably because the load is distributed across a smaller number of teeth. I always keep my old chain for a while just in case I encounter such difficulties (gives me time to consult with Adam about the best deal for a new cassette).
I have until very recently avoided chain wear tools and torque wrenches because little good can come of them except excessive spending and shit coming loose during races. I finally succumbed and picked up one of these a couple of weeks ago. It remains new in box. I will never own a torque wrench that is not attached to my wrists.

I have that one and it's saved my quite a few times.  Nothing worse that trying to adjust a rear mech that is skipping because your chain is stretched... except perhaps BREAKING your chain...

Your chain doesn't break because it is stretched.
Your drive train will work perfectly with a stretched chain for a very long time (just look in any bike basement). The problem comes when you change a stretched chain. Then you get skipping because of a worn cassette. That, in itself, is a kind of stretch gauge (ex post facto).
If you decide to go race with a skipping chain, then you are crazy (I'm trying to be nice about it).

PS. I change my chains once a year. No more no less. I don't measure, I just change them. I haven't had to buy a new cassette in many years. N.B. I still use 9 speed which I understand is more durable than 10/11.
PPS. A little bit of skipping may be ok. Ride it for a week or two and see if it stops. If not, put the old chain back on until your new cassette arrives.


I'm thinking of getting a new upgraded, smaller diameter set of rollers, specifically Kreitlers. 

At present I have a set of Minouras with  4.5" diameter drums.  I'm trying to decide between 3" and 2.25".Kreilter's website says the 3.0s offer  40% more resistance than the standard 4.5s while the 2.25s are %90 harder. They make it sound like the 2.25s are only for the buy macho amonst us.


Does anybody have any experience with either of those diameters? Can you do any real intervals on them?

Edit: I'm leaning towards the 2.25s

I found this chart comparing the different diameter Kreitlers for power at a given mph. It also includes the effects of using their accessories i.e. fork stand, flywheel and headwind fan. The 3.0s look pretty darn good.

For comparison on my Minoura 4.5s,  I put out 250 watts a 38.5 mph with 700x25 tires at 100 psi and I weigh 160. I'm guessing the drums have less mass when compared to the same diameter Kreitlers.

I have the 4.5 drums, am lighter, use 23mm tires.  I'd say those numbers seem to be in the ballpark of my reality.  I use the headwind unit much of the time.
I have 4.5 drums...I use the rollers for recovery though...when I do want some extra resistance....I go for the old "towel under the rollers" trick...which may be the most self-explanatory trick ever.
Attention Speedplay Zero owners. 
I successfully replaced all three bearings with an Ebay purchased kit. 

Bottom line: simple if you have tools to get the "C" shaped circlips off that hold the bearings in place. 
I did manage to strip the torx bolt (not the strongest), but not enough to prevent me from reinstalling. The old bearings were completely trashed.

For $32 shipped, I have functioning set of pedals. Happy to do a play by play on the needle bearing side if anyone interested.
Jeez Louise. 3 months on the Scott Foil and I have a nice knock, knock, knock, sound when I put torque thru the pedals. It's one per revolution. I just put a new seat on, but sounds like BB to me (kind of hollow sounding). Also when I'm out of the saddle it's the same but with bonus creak coming from the flight deck. Any ideas on how to best troubleshoot this appreciated.

@John, probably time to pull the BB, check and re-grease the bearings and then it and tighten it back down to spec.
