@norm
The We keep you cycling website has some great markdowns on SMP saddles periodically.

@Thierry

Merci... I just stumbled onto that site yesterday... and I see glorycycles.com and theprostuff.com have SMP demo program too. Unfortunately, none of these folks seem to have the model that I'm thinking I should try first (the Forma).

I came across this on ebay and wanted to have some of your opinions. There is very little in the description, I asked if everything pictured was included the seller said yes. He doesn't know why it is sold only with one crank arm since he seems to have purchased them this way. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180955169833&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

please explain:

does this mean when shifted the bike become UCI illegal? are they that stupid? (well I already know that answer)

he isn't including the non-drive side crank? weird. might be a good way to get a steal on a SRM.

The Sram (and Campy) TT shifters are ratchet shifters, meaning they return to that position after a shift. UCI rules dictate that if you have return to center shifters, the total extension is measured to the end of shifter tips (same for di2). Normal shifters are measured to the end of bar extension, excluding the shifter.
Here's a question for y'all...

I used to laugh at the fools who would buy pros last year's bikes...

And here I am intrigued by a recent tweet by Adam Myerson who appears to be selling his last year's Ridley cross bikes...

What do you wrenchy/cross dudes think of this prospect?
probably fine depending upon the price. Yeah, he beat the shit out of it for a year, but it should be ok. He's not the type of guy that would sell you something busted. Aluminum with carbon fork? Send the link.
anyone have a spare stem or two lying around I could borrow? I'm looking for a 110 & 120mm +/-6deg (31.8 handlebar clamp). I want to play around with my position - I think I'm a bit too hunched when in the drops and want to see if stretching out a bit helps. (I'm currently using a 100mm stem).
sure do
Hey as some of you know I've been in the market for a Quarq.
I have a question regarding GXP vs BB30 bottom brackets. My Giant is GXP but I'm hoping to replace that frame in the next year or so, and it seems likely that any new frame I pick up will be BB30.
So, in reality I will probably end up using the Quarq on a new BB30 frame longer than it will be on my current GXP Giant.
Because of this I'm thinking it makes sense - if I am going to invest in the Quarq crankset - to buy a BB30 crankset and use the GXP to BB30 adapter on my Giant until I replace that frame.
Does this make sense to those of you who are much more tech savvy than I?

A BB30 crank won't fit in your current frame. The axle is too fat, you can vice versa, use a stepdown on the new, so far unnamed BB30 frame to convert the GXP.
Mattie already said this . . . Sort of. The BB30 has a much wider bottom bracket (30 mm diameter I think). The bearings are pressed right into the bb shell followed by the crank spindle, which has bearing surfaces on it. This allows the bb30 crank spindle to be quite a bit fatter. People say that it is therefore stiffer, providing better tranfer of power (spindle less prone to twisting). The minimal parts for the bb30 bottom bracket (really only the bearings, no cups or anything else) means that the are minimal weight (though one can suppose that the thicker crank spindle must weigh a bit more). You can get the conversion kit for gxp to bb30, which allows the thinner gxp spindle to make contact with the wider bb30 bearings. But you cannot fit the wider bb30 spindle into the thinner gsp bottom bracket. If you use the gxp crank with conversion kit, you lose the stiffness advantage and also add some weight to the bottom bracket assembly.
BB30 uses aluminum spindle, GXP steel. The stifness tends to cancel out... Weight and Q factor are the advantages of BB30. Longevity, compatibility,  and ease of maintenance are the advantages of GXP. You can use a GXP in a BB30 frame with adapters (which I've done and it works great).
There are plenty of people arguing about advantages of BB30. Here is one such discussion which highlights the issues.

I have only one other thing to say. If my new bike creaks, I'm going to be REALLY upset.

any opinions on chain catchers / watchers / guards for cyclo-cross setups?

I use Rotor

But this is good too - just expensive - http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/22552-075_KED071-3-Parts-382-Chain-Guides/Tensioners/K-Edge-Cross-Double-Chain-Catcher-offerIN212NTG.htm?utm_source=Googlebase&utm_medium=datafeed&utm_campaign=FTP.htm&zmam=3075515&zmas=1&zmac=44&zmap=22552

I just bought the k-edge chain catcher from Tree Fort Bikes. I'll let you know how it works.
I'm wondering if anyone has a bike case they would be willing to loan me for about a week at the end of Sept and into Oct. I purchased a used Pika on ebay but need another case since my wife and I are traveling together and I don't see the need to be a 2 case family.

Which leads me to question number 2. Anyone ever done the Coleman Valley Rd climb in California (from stage 1 of this year's ATOC)? How bad is it? Here is the Strava segment: http://app.strava.com/segments/3639

My wife and I are riding in Levi's gran fondo hence the question above. I've got her set up with a 34-32 (thanks SRAM Apex) and I am going to swap out my 39 chainring for a 38 for that extra 2% Will a 38-28 be ok or should I think about something different? Anything else I should consider to ease my pain?

@eragot - haven't forgotten about your offer to try different stem lengths, life caught up with me and haven't had much time to think about it

Craig Zolan I have a Pika (for large bikes) you can borrow.

Haven't done the climbs...

Wow - awesome just let me know when a good time to get it would be. Maybe later in the day after the KCC club championship?

Should I get any more padding to use with the Pika? I was thinking pipe insulation would be a good protector that I could easily cut to length.
I padded my bag with closed foam pad I bought at REI, which is meant to go under your sleeping bag when you are backpacking. Super light weight. Not too expensive.

I wouldn't worry too much about that climb. It has steep parts, but is only 1.5 mi long. You can walk it if you need to!

i road coleman valley climb from East to West this June (that's climbing from Occidental and descending onto the PCH).

MY direction wasn't bad.  I had a 36front and a 26rear and it was fine for that.  There are lots of flat sections to rest on and even a few descents.

Climbing FROM the PCH is bit harder - shorter but a steadier, steeper grade.  That said, a 38/28 should be just fine.

Your wife's rig sounds failproof.

HAVE FUN!
@Craig Zolan - I think after the club championships is a fine idea.
Peoples,
I'm off to InterBike next week. Not going to pitch sponsorship--bad time to do it.  However, I'd like to know what you're interested in finding there.
Me too! I'll be at CrossVegas, sadly not racing.
@ Craig: stop by one of the local hardware shops and get some foam pipe insulation.  You can cut it to the right length to protect various parts that you think might get whomped.

I travelled high & low with my Pika and it never did me wrong - even when it was tossed UNDER a pile of luggage.

Most of my travels were pre my discovery of the pipe insulation trick by the way.
@ Wump:

I'm very interested in power measuring devices, if you see anything interesting holler.  Also, if you can score any pictures of you & celebrities in KCC50 hats that would be sweet.
got not KCC50 caps.  But it would be sweet. It's such a swagathon that I fear everyone would assume they'd get to keep the caps.
Yeah, we don't have enough to send you with :(
don't sprain your arm carrying back swag...
