did u take the line to the left or the right?  I was in there today as well...
on the left , over the obstacle :)
Challenge !!!
This I have to see...

Then maybe if I have the nerve I’ll try it as well
Winter and darkness does NOT stop the fun on MTB's...it makes it more rad

Yack's is planning on riding through the winter and doing a weekly night ride to break up the work week monotony.  Lights are cheap nowadays.  I'm going to upgrade soon.
If you've never done a night ride in the trails...all I can say is that flying a UFO seems trite by comparison.
Never flown one but I talked to this cat and he swears it's not all that...

6500 Lum's outta do it...

Is Magicshine legit these days?
Yes...legit
I'd like to do a night ride on the trail. Maybe we can organize something as a group. Hoping not in Cunningham though.
I like to park at Bethpage and ride down to Stillwell woods & then back...bout a 2:15 ride.
Planning on riding tomorrow...I do need to figure out my light situation.  I charged my 15 year old Light & Motion ARC light ($430 back in the day).  Currently letting it run down to confirm how much burn time I'll have

Cunningham it actually the logical place to ride for convenience...should be fairly close for everyone.
This system has my eye...as in my experience you'll want a bar & helmet light

I'm contemplating mtn biking this friday , maybe glacier ridge or stillwell , would love company
What  time?
Earliest I could leave Brooklyn 7.30 - but open to suggested times after that
Today I entered my first proper MTB race in about 20 years.  Yeah I did the Rocky Point 50 in September...but that was more of an ultra endurance event and I rode my cross bike.  But this was a 26 mile race.  I brought the Santa Cruz replete with 26" wheels, actual tubes, rim brakes and just about 80mm of travel up front.  I've been getting some mysterious flats at Cunningham recently (probably thorns)...so I dumped an extra bottle of sealant in the rear tube just in case.
I showed up an hour before the start and went to Race Awesome's beautiful tented registration area where I was greeted by some smiling people who all had ipad's open and waiting to confirm my online registration.  They handed me a sweet gift bag with all kinds of goodies inside...including this PLUS SIZE travel mug

I put the race number on the bike...which has a timing chip...which eliminates putting holes all over my expensive jerseys...
I prep for the start by applying some of the schwag in my gift bag...

First I lube my chain...then my ass...and that sounded wrong
The start was staggered and that was ok with me.  I went off with the Expert field.  The sport class started 5 minutes behind.  My plan was to ride my pace and wait for the first Sport riders to catch me at some point and then try and stay with them.
The start is one lap around the camp ground on fire roads...bout 1/2 mile.  I go out fast but not that fast.  Entering the single track it goes single file and I'm with a group...most spit the bit after about 2 miles and start pulling over to let riders by.  The guys who are going to win are gone...that leaves me and a guy on a fat bike who is plowing over everything with me on his wheel....and all I'm thinking is

To get a clean look at the trail...I pass...and Mr Fatty gets his first look at Blue...

You're my boy Blue !!!!
We trade pulls for the entire first lap...shortly into lap 2 I notice the fat tire in front of me start to slide sideways...this is bad as he has had mad traction for over an hour...My 26" wheels have no shot at whatever is coming and I grab a handful of brake lever as I approach the turn...braking...as always is more of a suggestion with my old rim brakes.  I was just hoping to scrub enough speed to stay upright but the Titanic turns faster than these brakes stop...

we know how this is going to end...

Yacks sides out spectacularly...

But I'm up!!! damage minimal..thanking U Saturdays rain for making the trail super squishy

skin intact too - bonus
I chase back onto Fatty's wheel.  I may have small wheels...but I gots a BIG front ring with 46 teeth and I ain't afraid to push it...

I rock steady for awhile and then Mr Fats plays his card...he knows he owns me on the steep, fast downhills & that's where he goes.  The perfect spot...a steep, rutted descent that  turns straight up into a loose, sandy climb.  The more speed on the downhill, the less pedaling up the climb.  I'm gapped and stuck spinning up the climb...he's gone and I'm so alone.  He finished about 1:30 ahead of me.  A few Sport Class riders finally catch me with about 4 miles to go...all on fancy 29er's...I can't stick and limp into the finish.
I ring the bell....

Skip the beers this time and kick it with Mr Frostie

I finish respectably...17th overall & looks like 5th in my age group...there were over 100 starters

The Santa Cruz acquitted herself but she's getting long in the tooth...just like her owner

There's a Strava file...there's always a Strava file   No Kissena bibs today cuz I put some much A&D ointment in them at that 50 mile race that they are essentially embalmed

You should really publish a Zine.
Also what's with the boots - you got some fancy tap lessons later on?

I don't know...but they look GREAT in pics...
Great report, as always.
I think I would have walked away after getting the travel mug.

Always lube your ass before your chain - I thought your mother taught you better than that!

I hope you miss us as much as we miss you...
My mother taught me if you can't race with panache...

you better finish with it !

Beautiful ride today; crisp fall air, blue skies and miles & miles of shred. The kind of riding through leaf covered forest floor that makes me think over & over again "damn I should have gopro'd this for the guys back in NYC"

Yes, that is Bigfoot with a bike wheel...

that a 26 inch wheel?  disc ??  If so...donkey punch that missing link wanna be and ship me that wheel !!!
Very wet and fun ride at Cunningham this morning
tryingbto figure out tire pressure on mtb tires , front wheel kept sliding out on corners , so I lowered pressure , but didn’t seem to help as the front end was harder to control
whats the guide line with pressure ?
I think wet is the real problem as well as weight distribution
but 35 psi would be a good start point
i always rode 40ish because tubes but now tubeless with some fat tomahawks so will see what this low psi is all bout soon
I'm thinking of heading to Cunningham early Saturday morning ,LMK
Mark - what time you thinking?
If i was going on my own , i'd say arrive 7.30/8, but im flexible -ish
Today we rode mountain bikes with peakless helmets
