I love that he had a Van Dessel CRB.

The one place where it's really challenging being a balleur on a budget is shoes.  If you have one pair of shoes, it's nearly impossible.  There are shoe covers for CX shoes, and that's an ok work around, but they typically don't work too well.  the super-cheap way is plastic bags between your feet and your shoes.  That way, your feet aren't too bad until water seeps in from your soaking wet socks.

A few years back, I bought a set of waterproof mtb/cx shoes.  They're not the most comfy, and they don't work perfectly, but they are fabulous in cold, wet races, they can be the warmup shoes, and I use them for some of my commuting.
it takes a few years, but i literally have 3 pairs of cx shoes --- although obviously, 2 is more than enough --- one pair is for muddy days/races. redbeard hooked me up (actually a bunch of us) w fantastic giro shoes, those are my main squeeze.

frankly one pair is all you need, just bring extra socks on wet days, one for pre ride, one to race dry and another for being comfy post race.
powers is exactly right, bring two of everything, except perhaps when it come to socks and gloves on wet days, for those then bring a ton of 'em
Cool story

I wish I could agree with this 100 times, because it is so right. Happy hands and feet make CX races much more pleasant. Most of the time if you can't stay dry at least you can stay warm.

The other thing to bring a ton of. PLASTIC BAGS! to put all your wet/muddy/sweaty clothes and shoes into after your race. Use the shopping bags you get from the grocery/Duane Reade rather than bringing or buying fresh garbage bags.

This is part of Powers' article. Frankly if you are racing and using the two of everything you will need a big fresh new trash bag. A few months ago, bought an Ikea laundry bag for $5, been using that since.
Do sit-ups before bed help with muscle repair?

"Conclusions: Resistance-type exercise performed in the evening augments the overnight muscle protein synthetic response to pre-sleep protein ingestion and allows more of the ingested protein-derived amino acids to be used for de novo myofibrillar protein synthesis during overnight sleep."

I am waiting for the inevitable lawsuit from bystanders who are injured by the escaping gasses. Also would you want to ride your stinky bike after a break in attempt?

The electroforged frames were indeed heavy but the smooth lugs were one of the more distinctive and beautiful aspects that were hard to come by until carbon frames took over.

Details on the pretty cool (lost) art of manufacturing these frames:

This reminds me: in 2008 I rescued a gorgeous emerald Varsity step-through and built it out with a variety of parts, including swept-back riser bars and whitewall tires, for my then-girlfriend. The serial number dated it back to the 1960s. Interesting articles. Sheldon goes deep, as always.
would make a cool fixie

I had a Lotus Unique....it was the tits

Phil Gaimon, whose VeloNews column I'd come to enjoy, moves on from the pro peloton to...the Hollywood producers' circle? We'll see.

The Zipp 454 Wheelset: When Marginal Gains become Very Marginal.

if you are interested, GCN did a segment on the wheels...

I stopped watching the video when the zipp dude said somethig like "basically, it energizes the air" prefaced by lots of 2 watts in blah blah blah... so. much. fucking. yawn.
Ermagerd!! Look at all those mini airfoils (calling in air-traffic control, for $2,000 a wheel)
Wow.

Didn't Jens win this like three years in a row?

Phil Gaimon taking Strava KOMs from dopers.

The article focuses a bit on Thorfinn aka Nick Brandt-Sorenson, but Phil also takes digs at Leipheimer and Horner.

Oh hey, Mandeville, I remember that ride!

Also the pair of quotes below seem to be contradictory, but admittedly I don't remember the details for either.  On the face of it Levi and Chris are both pro dopers, but it's okay for Levi but not Horner because he gets along with the former and not the latter?  Also its better that a pro dopes as opposed to some poser on Strava?

“I really don’t have any beef with Levi,” Gaimon notes. “His situation is a little more complicated than someone who is just doping to get KOMs.”

“Chris and I never got along,” says Gaimon. “I think he got away with some stuff. I think he was doing some stuff that wasn’t completely upright. And last year he came back into Continental racing with an attitude that was offensive and it was fun to beat him. It would be fun to beat him again.”
