Hello friends,
Today marks my departure from Van Dessel. It’s been a wild and fun ride over the past 20 years (?!). I’m incredibly grateful for all of your support and passion, this is why I love doing what I do & have enjoyed every minute.
Change is constant, and I find myself embarking on a new adventure that I’m confident will challenge & inspire me as Van Dessel has.
I’m extremely happy with the 2021 line of Van Dessel bikes due to be introduced and available over the following months. I think you will agree; it’s some of our best work and sure to raise eyebrows.
I wish everyone all the very best. These are crazy times, but we will get through them together ..at a distance! When we do I look forward to seeing you all on the other side and continuing the ride.

Wow. Well it's been like 4 or 5 years (?) since he took on outside money, I do wish him the best. Feels like a shame he's got to leave his brand behind though.

Regarding Van Dessel, I just spoke to a friend of mine who is a friend of Edwin's, and has done a bit of work for him (named almost all of the bikes, plus other copywriting and some graphics) — JP, you likely know who I'm talking about. If I understand what I was told correctly, what happened is that the current owner of the brand decided to put a relative in charge, and that guy is a cycling ignoramus, which made it impossible for Edwin to continue with it. A real shame. It was a great brand. But it is Fuji's gain, as that is where Edwin is next landing. And a bummer for my friend, who had shitloads of fun coming up with cool names for the bikes.

That sounds horrible. What a heartbreak to build an amazing brand and business to lose it like that. I just assumed it was 5 years since he took on outside backers and he’d worked his way out.

I was just about to reach out to the same guy. Saves me the effort.
Kent, Van Dessel's owner, is actually huge in the supermarket-quality, American-made bike realm. They're also a family business. And that's a problem for employees.
Fuji lost a great bike design guy in Steve Fairchild, who, when faced with Fuji's insolvency, jumped to Huffy's Vaast bikes and is no doubt doing other stuff as well, particularly with the metal tubing Huffy owns, All-lite. So it's good they picked up Edwin. Fuji's road bikes under Steve were pretty awesome. It will be interesting to see what Edwin does.
