Sure, the rules seem arbitrary. I think not awarding the title to Buchman was wrong, fwiw. I did an everest in races 12 or so years ago at something called The Everest Challenge. It was a brutal affair. But it doesn't count. I don't hold that against the people who have come up with this silly idea.

I just can't believe there have been two high profile attempts where something went wrong lol. Our own @Matt Budofsky got it right from his inlaw's house!

I feel like If I were going for a high profile record that required me to ride 8 hours either up a 12% gradient or 65mph downhill, I would double check that it is going to "count".

I think it's absolute horseshit. There is no money on the line and Morton was far enough under the previous best that another 450 meters would not have made the difference.

In my view it's a gentleman's bike contest and not a surveyor's skill test. He did his best with the data he got from Strava. Yeah he could have done better but I don't think he's the kind of guy who spends even 10% as much time online as any of us do - nor was he trying to cheat or game the contest.

To penalize him like that is just childish, and makes bikes and bragging-rights bike contestants seem like into a bunch of petulant, petty assholes.

Slow, slow clap for the jerks responsible... IMHO

I understand Buchman not getting it- he didn’t follow some of the clearest and easiest to follow rules. Morton, on the other hand, used the Strava segment that was deemed “official” and basically did everything a normal person would do.

FWIW, Andy and the other guy who heads up Hells 500 recognized that “racing” the Everest challenge was never what it was intended and that for the overwhelming majority, finishing is the achievement, not the speed. Because of this, they said their systems of verifying and what not aren’t geared towards these high profile attempts and that they need to adapt better in the future.
