When I was talking with Poertner at the Philly Bike Expo last year, he was saying he buys the latest 3D printer from a local-ish company whenever they have an upgrade (maybe because they print for the Indy car business in Indianapolis) and sells the used one.  His claim is that much of the 3D titanium printing business he gets is from the industry, not for consumer sales, in the form of titanium bits for frames--dropouts, bridges, hangers, etc.  

Are you 3D printing Halloween masks?  How long does it take?

I suppose if you can depreciate the cost of the printer it might make sense.

I'm printing various mandolorian (Din & Heavy) armour sets. It's taking a while; failed prints, and some size experimentation. I expect the finishing process (primer, sanding & paint) to take longer. It's slow going but we're making progress.

Filament is about $10 per kilo, paints are about the same per can. Probably end up being a couple of hundred bucks when all is said and done but the two month process is a daily joy to us all as we watch parts grow, get primed/sanded, etc. The expression on my son's face when he holds a custom part perfectly sized just for him is beyond compare.

^ that number may be too low; I'll update with photos when things are complete and I have a better sense of how much paint & fillament I used.

(also have to account for prints that were the wrong size, or failed prints - I'm not keeping that close an eye on it)

You make it read like you're using at least 10-15 kilos of filament--that seems high.  A bike helmet is in the 250g range, and would seem haver far more material in it than a shell.

If it's a full body of armor, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being that much.  There's support material that needs to be accounted for, and, as Jules mentioned, failed prints.  A part could fail in the 10th hour of a 12 hour print and all that filament is essentially trash.

@gre@GregHoge we had a power blip several days into a muti-day print. Tears were shed and a UPS was purchased...

@jp The filament is the least of it. The 2 & 1 primer/filler and paint/gloss is what adds up. Here is a pauldron for the Mando Heavy costume. If you zoom in you can see it only uses about 150 grams of filament (including supports) at 15% infill.

Helmets I'm doing 20% infill and they're about 800 grams including supports. When Raph's is done on Sunday I'll weigh it before I prime it.

@JohnMalcolmson there is a guy on Etsy that has some nice models (i didn't include the price tags of those) and of course there are one-off's for the rifle, etc.

Mostly I've been wanting to do this for years but it took forever to figure out the fussiness of 3d printing and for a large enough format printer to come on the market.

Another new race has been added to the Americas calendar, with a UCI 1.2-ranked Gran Premio New York City to be held in conjunction with the Gran Fondo New York City (GFNYC).

Taking place on May 19, the men's race will start on the George Washington Bridge 15 minutes ahead of the gran fondo racers on the same 137km course with 1,900 metres of elevation coming from punchy short climbs.

"Our goal has always been to integrate pros into our mass participation races, similar to what is done in marathon and triathlon," organiser Uli Fluhme told Cyclingnews.

"While we have some pros race our GFNYs, even from WorldTour teams, having a separate pro race start just ahead of the mass participation race is a big step towards bringing both worlds closer together. This format is a world premier and provides the pro cycling fans the opportunity to race the same course on the same day as the pros, just behind them."

The field will be made up of Continental and ProTeams with the goal of becoming a 1.1-ranked event so that some WorldTour teams can participate in the future.

"We’re also working on adding pro races to existing GFNYs around the world where it makes sense from a logistical perspective. For our mass participation GFNY races, we already have closures and police in place so adding a pro race just before the mass participation race is an obvious next step," Uli Fluhme said.

For now, there is only a men's field in place but the organisation hopes to add a women's GP NYC in 2024. Because the race would require additional road closure time, the women's event is pending additional sponsorship.
