I tried Eurosport a few years ago, with a VPN, and was terribly unsuccessful. Worth trying again, but likely nothing has changed. One of the many pluses of GCN+ was that they made the decision not to block VPNs. I literally consume all cycling racing thru GCN.
These news are heartbreaking, and will likely have a real felt effect on cycling in North America.

The announcement coming on Nov 15th, a pay day for many, also suggests they could be cutting a few GCN+ jobs today.
In the article above: "Information for viewers in the USA and other territories around the world served by GCN+ was not yet available."
This is not just where we find coverage as fans. The USCX Series, and NCL were predicated on the races being broadcast on GCN+ (NCL teams literally stood themselves this year because of this, Mag Rochette opted to race the full USCX series, as the broadcasts made it worth it) -- & way more notable, MTB World Cups moved from Red Bull TV just this year.
This was, in part, how some cyclists, teams, and events were finding sponsors, and justifying the effort.

A little while back, I read some older cyclists grousing about the cost of entry-level road bikes. So I decided to figure out what there was.
Basically, I settled on $2k as the upper price limit, as that seems to line up with adjusting prices for inflation over the years, and is also about what a person working two months (a summer) at minimum wage in much of the country earns.

Interesting read. My take on this is that there is a cost the market will bear for entry into a sport, and that seems to hold true.
Entry level costs for bikes, skiing and golf all seem to hover around 2k (depending on clothing).
That's pretty darn close (as you point out) to the inflation adjusted $650 of 1986 money you spent.
