they had me wear this crappy rapha stuff too! bike was equiped w/ campy super record 11 speed and enve wheels, not too shabby and rode nicely, very precise handling. I had never ridden titanium before. I wish I could've kept the bike as payment!

This is interesting stuff. The changes would have made my cat 2 upgrade harder, I guess I'm glad I put in for that.
There is one thing here that fixes a common complaint: rider upgrading to cat 1 with "training race" points. My only question now is, what constitutes a "training race" - the USAC permit level "E" races?
"For Category 2 to 1 road upgrades, riders may upgrade once they have accrued 35 points. 50 points in a 12
month period is a mandatory upgrade. Note that only 10 points from training series or masters’ races may be used for upgrading."

Yeah, I feel like making it easier to move from 4-3 is a bad idea.
Mike in some sense, its now easier to get to 2. What's harder, 25 in a year or 35 in an indefinite period?

Well, it's actually always been very easy to upgrade to 3 and I think that a lot of the Cat 4s here in Kissena are eligible already if they chose to be: 20 pack finishes of 50 riders - that basically means two seasons of L&C cup races with a couple of Central Park spins thrown on top (it's always a pack finish as there is no getting dropped on those courses and the vast majority of those races, especially CP, are 50+ riders). That mechanism has never had a time limit.
Irrespective of that, the points are just not awarded in anything remotely resembling a system befitting the race situation. 31 miles in a field of 21 earns you the same as 100 miles in a field of 50?? You can win the Harlem Crit (a national race, on TV, held once a year, drawing riders from all over the North East) and get the same points as an FBF 'crit' of which there are many throughout the year?? Also, 'road race' at 31 miles? It should be 50 minimum to constitute a road race. State Championships, which offer the state 'championship' title, get the same points as a race of which there are 20 iterations per year?
I think they are really missing a a trick with the upgrade system. If 'national' or 'interstate' races were given more clout in terms of upgrade points, then we would not see races like Tokeneke (Connecticut state Champs) or the Longsjo Classic suffering so much (both cancelled this year): there'd be more of an incentive to go. As is, one can just do a small local race and achieve the same result.

If I didn't know better I'd have said this new ruling is a prank. Probably adds validity to the idea of a 3/4 Masters field and a Pro123, Cat 4/5 instead of the traditional breakdown we see (P123, 4, 5)

My take - there was a time limit on pack finishes.
using local races that lack deep results mean you can't get pack finishes
the definition of pack finish was liberalized about 2 years ago, so most people could get it in most races.
the changes essentially make cat 3 the new cat 4 as without the time limit...
I don't like moving people up without results. dangerous, but not in my hands anymore.
as for 3-2 it doesn't make sense in competitive terms, but if someone who pluigs away with a result here and there for a couple of years can accrue points - then they choose to upgrade, but are then faced with being uncompetitive, unless Cat 2 is the new 3! the rub is automatic upgrade if you accumulate enough points! of course, the races still need to qualify for distance and size.
2-1 won't happen as a gradual process though - wait, the cat 1 upgrade guy is actually quite liberal.
the overall effect is to force people up a category, but the racing won't change.
what was needed was cat 6 or cat 4 / cat 4 masters... Jules' 3/4 masters is probably a good way to go.
