There are quite a few intersections I hit on my daily commute where pedestrians are jumping the light and jaywalking RIGHT after a car has gone through. They just don't understand you're going at similar speeds. You don't register as a death machine. Fuck em!

That pedestrian mob vs solo biker thing is delightful. Before I am "committed to my line" and have to "drop my bike where the least pedestrians are", I just scream acerbic insults in Scottish or ring bell. You just have to get the mobs' attention from about 1 or 2 miles away, then that just leaves you to pick off the remaining few surly or phone absorbed ped's. Phone absorbed ped's are the most dangerous because they may freeze or try to reverse course.

I'm personally kind of road-rash-phobic, so I tend not to find myself "committed to lines" on a high-speed crash course with a horde of pedestrians in a dense urban environment. But if I were suddenly teleported into such a scenario, my instinctual reaction would probably not make me look like a saint, sadly. Anyone who played a hard contact sport for any length of time knows all about the "win-the-hit" reflex.

old article, but explains how these post-tour crits work. i love it. also, i'll always be a sucker for McEwen. I was on the mountain in 2004, watching him wheelie over the finish line on the Alpe D'Huez TT. Sagan was 14 at the time and covered in zits.
