R&A Cycling Series

Strange dynamics, at least to me, for the old man's race today.  We got in some good licks, our Kiwi sprinted well for the intermediates, and some more, but the field just didn't want to play.  Guess this is how the 40+ rolls.

Looking at the start list, there were plenty of breakaway guys and many of them had teams that could help let breaks go.  But three that I'd put in that camp, Brauer, Blue Ribbon, Bicycle Planet, didn't make any real effort to foster a break.  With the first, it's probably because they put everything on Gary Steinberg winning a field sprint.  Blue Ribbon, I'm at a loss for their riding other than they don't have the fitness.   And Axis, in retrospect, was only interested in the intermediate competitions.  I was pretty surprised that they didn't have at least Paul Carbonara going for a breakaway.

Likewise, Dioslaki still has a good jump, but he's dying when he's off the front.  I tried getting away with him on several occasions and it was as if he was slowing down when it was his turn to take a pull.  Jeff Cline was still good for attacking and I got in some pulls with him, but it felt like there were no series of attacks.  There'd be an attack, a chase, then the field would cruise a bit.  I tried breaking this up, but I'd get pulled back and the field would sit up.

We were mostly up front most of the time, with two weaknesses.  Too often, when I'd get pulled back, twenty guys would pass before a Kissena rider would pass.  This is too far back.  Just positioning better can pay dividends in terms of splits and attacks.  The second is we didn't attack when one of our guys was brought back enough.  Giving the field a breather works as a reset.

As for the finish, I knew Eric and John were close to me and I was stoked when Condon rolled by.  He steadily rode to the front of the field and kept the gas on.  He went until he was done.  I did the same, probably should have tried to pull out another 10-15 seconds so John could have gone to about 200m.  Another person for the train and we can lead it faster.  It's a pity Eric wasn't there to finish it off, though strikingly, of the early picks of who would be good in a field sprint, only Chris Loehner was able to finish well.
I don't think this was representative of a normal masters race, which frequently have a break of 5-8 take off in the middle of the race and stay away. This is because there is generally a small group of guys who are clearly stronger than most of the field and they often have good support from the remainder of their team. Given a bigger representation of strong people who normally ride in the 1-2-3 field, perhaps the usual break seekers (e.g. Carbonara/Axis, O'neil/Wonder Wheels, Brauer) were a little shy, thinking it wouldn't be so easy to get away and stay away. And with the new melange, nobody really knew what to expect. For one thing, the field was huge and had a lot of horsepower. I bet it will be different next time.

We call masters veterans in NZ and I prefer the mental association of the guy who got a medal when he tore a nad off on the barbed wire while charging the machine gun nest to masters, which for me only conjures wiley old wheel suckers. But this was a masters race on steroids (for health!), and with a sprinkling of 1/2's it was slightly faster yet full of masterful defense in anticipation of stronger teams/riders causing mahem.

JP's observations are spot on; we had an opportunity to counter and I think also when we counter-attack, we really need to attack explosively from the front to stir it up. It does beg the question of who in our team could survive in the company of a couple of other 1/2's, like when I used my superior mass to sneak off the front on the downhill just after a hard Dioslaki attack was brought back; a strong translations guy sat in, but it was soon apparent he was a better TT'er than me. By the top of the hill JP and a couple of others had bridged to us and I was getting into debt. JP went to front to try and drive it, but I just didn't have the legs to help out. I'm just wondering who out of us could have gone 11 laps if JP wasn't there?

Green Jersey: The first sprint, Axis guy was away. I sat behind a muscular Johan Burrowes, but he didn't contest, and I just kicked enough to beat a Brauer guy out of the points (he saw me coming and tried to kick again—too late sucka!). Second sprint: Ragot rolled up, said let's do this. Ferried me to the front from about 15 back. We stayed at the head of the field through Temple and he got a semi-draft coming towards the S, two Axis guys went early and he just chilled and then rode straight by them about 5mph faster! Coming in to the barriers I had a to go maybe 10m earlier than I preferred, but I got a good launch second wheel. The two guys on my wheel jumped me at the top of the hill, one guy was gone, the second I clawed back for second. I'd like to see the power data for the Ragot effort!

Anyway, Charlie emailed me and the guy in first for Green Jersey isn't there for R2, so we is in Green!

Calling all grumpy old men - this weekend is the return of the series and there are already 50 pre-reg'd for the masters.

Tick Tock.  Attention Geezers.  Attention Geezers...
I had to get my reading glasses to see what everyone was writing about.

In.

Hey, I'm in too. Are we in command of, or close to, any leader jerseys?

Lets start thinking about a plan. First question, is everyone up for the team approach, or any of you guys just stretching your legs and want to be left out of the group plan?
I'm 100% behind whatever the team needs. I'm definitely not at my best but I'm happy to go twice as hard for half the time.
Malcolmson in green. I think I can assault dots given how I'm riding. We could use a team for each. If I can't get points the first time on the dots sprint, and be ahead of the Jersey holder kevin McNeill, I'll give up on dots and hunt the win and helping Malcolmson retain and increase his lead. I'll Marshall the troops as necessary.
good luck you old billy goats.  I am taking myself offline for some maintenance  and retooling this weekend.  I have a massage scheduled for Saturday, I'm getting my Shimano shoes baked and I'm having my fit dialed in.
My coach recommends I take a recovery week.

Might we try a two pronged strategy?
Sprint 1 and KOM 1 neutralize breaks and activate Kissena lead-out.
Sprint 2 and KOM 2 we instigate a break prior to gobble up points (break master JP & Co. + Axis + Bicycle Planet + Brauer would seal the deal) . With side winds/rain forecast, a break could succeed. Failing that we set up the train again for Ragot and I. Something for everyone!

Cat 5's—let's here from you guys re hatching a team plan.

I am fitter and less fat than the last round (although as i hear on a daily basis less fat does not mean slim). So I hope to be of more use. Also I think I may be best served doing as much as I can early on and blowing, than being pack fodder of no consequence for the duration.
So happy to be part of the first prong.
I won't be making this weekend's R&A race. Family obligations interfere. Kissena has strong legs for this race, go out and make some noise.
5s roll call:
Theirry
Randy Engler (?)
Rick Perner
David Y.

This is probably going to be my last 5s race so I plan to be aggressive and attack occasionally even if they go nowhere.  Let other teams chase me down.  If anyone else feels strong, attack right when they're about to catch me and I'll slow it down so they'll have to go around.

If it comes down to a usual field sprint, let's reconvene on the right within the last 1k - temple on the right is the 1k mark with lots of room to move up and reposition.  The plan is to jump around 300m so whoever is behind me can either stay on my wheel or let someone chase first and then overtake them.

Does that sound like a decent game plan?
I'm in for this Saturday... as a marshall captain.  :-)
@Phillip, mind if you bring your Rudy Sterling helmet?  I'd like to see if the small/med fits my head.
@Dave - will do.

Hey Folks!!!! We need a few more folks to help with registration. please sign up. the more people we have, the smoother it goes. (and race for free!!!!!)

I will NOT be racing on saturday. My bike is still in it's travel case, which is in the basement, and under 4" of water ...
Anyone else willing to help with registration?  It's always nice to have some backup in case someone needs to run to the bathroom.

Oof, that's no bueno.  Any chance of bringing it upstairs and drying it out overnight?
