I think it's only 12 laps, no?

I think this race has early break written all over it.  Many of the horses have teams so once a Kissena is up there with Axis and Brauer and Dioslaki and one or two others, it will be hard for teams to muster a concerted chase.

I'm trying to decide when is the right time for me, but I'm going to be looking for combinations.  The hardest question to me is how to handle the inevitable first-hill attack from Dioslaki.
fives roll call.  i see aaron, dave, wes, rick, edwin and me.

i don't see foundation in this week's race, and so hopefully we'll have fewer false attacks on the hill.  ride will probably try it once or twice, but speaking to james and david last week i think they are resigned to that not working in only five laps. expect maybe some surprise breaks elsewhere.

although it's pretty much a full field, only ride, major taylor and us are well represented.  we've gotta get organized this week... with 50-75m to go last week we had ashley, wes and me all following separate (non-kissena) wheels.  i cannot help but feel that had we been together and organized, we'd have placed collectively higher (or at the least, got ashley on the podium).

i'm not suggesting some kind of slick lead-out train (after all, we're fives) but at the least let's line up in the final 1k or so and try and dictate pace / positioning.  there was too much cat-and-mouse last week between us, foundation, ride and major taylor in the final 2, 300m.  we're big enough and strong enough to boss that a little.

i'll be there pinned up and ready to roll for 5:45.  if we can, let's try and get together and talk via a couple of laps.

Mark C., there's nothing slick about a lead-out train. Don't let scaredy-cat cat 4s fool you. If you were close enough to notice/see that you had 3 kissena's freelancing it in the end, you were close enough to follow each other. Do it right this week!
Try this:
talk to RB guys and ask them to come with you on a break.
have 2-3 guys attack/string out the field for a full lap starting on the hill with 3 to go. This has to be hard.
once they have been caught and everyone is gassed/sitting up from the effort, you and your RB buddy attack on the hill with 2 to go and make it stick.
If it doesn't work, you still have plenty of time to recover for the finale.

I am taking a Pasadena on kom's and green sprints.  To quote Dirty Harry (not ours) "Man's gotta know his limitations".  This race is stacked with guys who are way faster than me and who will be going for the jerseys. I will take the "Akido" approach, "Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on."  If I'm attacking anywhere, it will be right after the sprint & kom's.
@mb&co,
ok, will not over think...am ready &willing!
...re: 'honey badger' not a pretty fellow, is persistent.
@Yacks gottcha...be the cork in the stream.

Re Disolowski's first lap, first hill attack. How to handle. The answer is: it depends. Are we worried that this is going to be the move of the race? Or is it just away for him to warm-up his legs and swing his junk in our faces by attacking and then staying out there for 3/4 of a lap?

I think if you are worried about it being "the move" then you gotta go with him. Otherwise we get Malcolmson or Stokes or somebody else with warm/strong legs that can ride his wheel for the first part of the race. Or we let him out there and you and Ragot hang back about 12-15 riders so you can jump on the bridge-up attempts.

Worst case scenario, D-man escapes and is in a dangerous break and we totally miss it. Then it's up to us to bring it back, or get you or whoever's on fire on our team up to the break.
watch the selection of riders in breaks....some Axis,  Brauer, Blue Ribbon, Deno's....if they are there...the block will be on in mass...
@Clifford

Let me know how I can work for you and Wes.

If it ends up as a field sprint kind of day - which, let's face it, is highly probable - I'll try to stay close by and do what I can.

I'm working the reg table in the morning so will not be able to meet up before hand.  I'll be at PP around 7 if you want to spin and talk.
wise words, marc and dstokes.  i do like the idea of making a break work; it would spare another five laps / group-sprint affair and actually insert some excitement.

BUMP. 6:15am start. 6:15!
good luck!

I'll let all the individual and team stories of glory filter in without saying too much here. But a couple of quick highlights.

  • Everyone appeared to make it to the start on time...EVEN ME! Woohoo!
  • 40+ Master's field was having nothing of any breakaway action. Kissena rode well as a team I would say, although there's always room for improvement.
  • With one lap to go, we had at least 5  Kissena's at the pointy end of field coming up the last climb.
  • John Malcolmson is in a multi-rider tie for the sprinter's jersey.
  • Cat 5 crew were happy with how they raced as a team. Two guys placed in the top 10 with a 6th and 8th place.
Found a brand new Kissena water bottle on the grass after the race.
Anybody want to claim it?

Upon further review Dave....the bottle is indeed mine.  I thought I stowed it away in my bag....maybe I can get it next week at the Castaldi cup race.
Yacks
great to see yacks making it uncomfortable for everyone, leading the entire field with his pain face on the last time up the hill.  harry also right up front.  nice racing, gents.
cat5s quickie update

Mark C., Wes, Aaron Edwin, and Me

Before the race the 5 of us decided to try to stay together on the right side for the inevitable field sprint.  Pretty tame pace, a few predictable attacks at the hill.  Mark gave it a shot but no one bit.  Ride Brooklyn had a go, nada.  Someone else went for it on lap 5, zippo.  A few sketchy new guys, but it was a laid back enough that it didn't matter.  One new guy was tall/wide and it was tempted to stay behind him, but unfortunately he was wearing short-shorts and sported a fuzzy plumbers crack.  I decided it wasn't worth it.

By the downhill, Aaron, Wes, Mark, and I were all within the same front-ish vicinity of each other (Edwin, didn't see you...).  Around 250m I think a CRCA guy jumped early and everyone followed.  Wes was right in front of me and accidentally clipped out so I started sprinting around him.  At the crest a Foundation guy came flying by and he was gone (took 3rd?).  Another guy came up on the same side but I was determined to at least beat him and just caught him at the line.

6th for me, 8th for Clifford.  If Wes didn't clip out he would have definitely been top 5.

Next week I want to position myself better at the end since I should be in front of Wes and/or Mark.
@david totally unintentional pop out... no idea how it happend. super sketchy to say the least but I'm just happy I didn't take anyone out once I tossed my hand up and dropped back.

Lots of weird vibes during today's race. I'll see the rest of you guys in the 4s in a few weeks.

P.S. - Where is the line drawn between strategic marking/ drafting and wheel sucking? I got an earful from some foundation jabrone today.

For next race our strategy should be to try and get john In green with a train. To save me for the end I think I should be johns sweeper. I'll try to get away but if that doesn't happen I'll help keep John's wheel clear. If there is a sprint finale then I should still be fresh enough.  Plus for the sprints I can also soak up some points.

Also based on today's race, I think I can easily contest kom sprints if we think I should go for that Jersey.

Good team racing. We were there and executed for the sprint Jersey and final sprint. I didn't fire the best for the final sprint, but will next time.

My race report is simple. The teams wanted to get jerseys. They raced to make that happen, not to create a break.  Both JP and I held back but were right there for the kom and sprint sprints. I think we were among the strongest but wanted a break when there wasn't one in the offering.

At the end we talked and john and I were arguing over who would sprint. I didn't feel it but after condon took me to the front down the hill. JP and john picked us up and trained it in. I lost johns wheel but stayed in the sprint until a rec rider on the right suddenly appeared in front of me. I braked. I was done.  Others said john did a real nice lead out.

We'll get it more dialled in next time. But the honey badger the Grehan the condone and stokes pulled it all together in what was a fast race. We left with john positioned well. Some of the best team riding I've seen us execute in a long time.

The sprint competition went like this. An axis rider slipped up the road so we were sprinting for second. I stayed close to the front letting others lead it out. JP and john must have been right behind me. JP went for it. So did john. John got third.

Next sprint, I picked up john in the chute and guided him at the front and gave him 45 seconds of lead out. Blew by two axis riders. Two guys grabbed johns wheel. He took second. Next time I need to go 10 seconds longer for john to get it. Curiously, Jules noted that I was closer to the back that time up the hill. He didn't know why!

Got caught up at a bad position at the back towards the end and didnt feel like moving up 20 places at the risk of crashing out. ill try to place myself better earlier next time.
Great race to watch and the photos will prove out the Old Guys did a stellar job of patrolling the front and riding close together overall.

Yaks stuck the knife in deep whenever he got the chance; sprinting the hill for the non-KOM laps and then taking a flier on the final lap.

Everyone looked very strong; hopefully the rest of the series isn't so "anti-break" and double hopeful my knee & form comes around soon enough for me to participate :)

Pictures later tonight after the kids go to sleep.

That sir, is what we like to call the "Right Decision"

Nicely done :)

Feel free to use these for personal purposes - if you have others (or video) feel free to send 'em to me and I'll add them to the KCC Flickr Stream or our Youtube/Vimeo channels.
As an aside, I think that this would be a great race series to drug test at.
Good photos @Jules!
was the avg speed over 26 for that race?  It was fast all day and strung out.   It was interesting to see what cards were going to be played in the sprint & KOM by the other teams.  Axis wants the KOM and not sure who is gunning for the green but I believe we can get Johnny Malc in green at the next race.  I only saw the front of the race a few times and I threw down some digs when I got there because I didn't know when I would see the front again.  I figured hitting the hill hard on non KOM laps would catch the pack off guard.  The  bell attack was for interval work as I had no business sprinting today.
The orange helmets really helped in the big field.  It is easy to spot a "friendly".  From back of the pack the helmets looked like orange bobbers on a sea of humanity...
