The Food and Drink Ride

117 comments · 1211 views
Who?
Any club members willing to pack on the calories.

What?

A casual, social ride where we putter around, visit multiple eating establishments, and nosh our way through the city.  We'll end at one of the many fine beering and fooding establishments.  You can join for all or some of the ride depending on your schedule.

When?
I propose July 13, 20, 21, or 27.  If you're planning to come please indicate which of those dates works best for you.

Where?
For this inaugural ride, I plan to keep the route within Brooklyn and Manhattan.   Queens/Staten Island/Bronx members, you can help organize the next one to show off your super, awesome neighborhood eats.

Why?
a) Eating delicious things needs no reason.
2 - Tito is moving way out of state in early August and it would be great to send him off with a final taste of NYC.
IV. It's nice to hang outside the context of races and training rides!

Bonus question:  What kit, bike, and wheelset should I use?
Bring your commute/grocery/folding bike and casual clothes.  A lock might be necessary, though long chains/ulocks can be shared between two bikes/wheels.  Under no circumstances will recumbent riders be allowed (just kidding, you're welcome to join for comedic purposes).

Interested riders, please respond below and I'll start planning out the route!
YES
20th or 21st.
count me in - i could try to do any weekend EXCEPT the 27th.....
@Dave - 13th or 27th for me.  21st can work too if need be, but the Lou Maltese race is that morning and I know I'm going to feel like sh!t after (but that doesn't preclude me from eating, just from biking around too much).
no go until august ~5 for me :(

pictures or it didn't happen!  thanks for doing this
@Brendan, we can totally do another one after you're freeeeeeeeeee

I love this.  David and I spent a good chunk of the training ride Saturday discussing spots to hit up.  I mentioned DiFaros, but in hindsight it's not the most practical for a hop-in, hop-out eatery-ride.

21st might work for me, if it was afternoon.
@Tito - When you have a random day off during the weekday (he's closed Mon/Tues) go well before noon and line up to order a pie.  It's definitely a must have before you leave.

My "utility" street pizza choice for this ride will be Joe's on Carmine st.
I love Joe's!  It's the best pizza out there!
i could do the 27th.
Alrighty, folks, I'm more than happy to do 2 weekends because I LOVE to eat.

Ride (A)wesome - Sunday, July 21st

Yang
Tito
Ragot
Sterns
Aaron

Ride (B)odacious - Saturday, July 27th
Yang
Phillip
Clifford

I'm going to try to cram all of these guys into the route:
  • Bagels
  • Pie
  • Pizza
  • French pastries
  • Gelato
  • Western Chinese
  • Italian subs
  • Beer garden

Possible candidates:

  • Vietnamese Sandwiches - These are pretttttty pungent and you will be burping it up all day.
  • Chinese hand pulled noodles - Hole in the wall spots and not the easiest thing to eat on the street
  • Shanghai style soup dumplings - Usually sit down establishments
Oh man.. I could use those this morning.  I couldn't eat enough after last night's Floyd!
joe's shanghai.  <3 soup dumplings <3

now i'm hungry.  thanks.
artichoke pizza! That will leave you set for a meal though. So much pizza in one slice!
Totally, we'll hit that up randomly another time.
Okay guys, I'll be finalizing the ride sometime this week.  Bring your appetites and cash.  Some of these are cash only businesses.  We'll be splitting foodstuffs so we don't pass out from eating so much.

27th riders (Philip & Clifford) - I need to be elsewhere that evening so won't be able to end with a bier garten finish, but feel free to go on without me.  We will definitely be noshing the whole damn day though, so maybe that's a good thing.

i can do the 28th if y'all chugulugs are still hungry

good looking out, Yang!
28th is L&C cup race, but willing to hit up some of the more local joints with you afterward (post kondatori).
Hell YES. Brilliant! July 13 and 20 are a no-go for me, but the other proposed dates work swimmingly. Thanks @David and @Tito!
was checking out rides at this dude's off-off-off market "used bike shop" in sheepshead bay (where i scored a nice single speed beater)  and found the attached tandem gem.    who wants to go buy it with me and use it for the food and drink ride?

P.S. the bike reminds me of a bad joke:

Q: What do sex in a canoe and mass market American beers have in common?
A: They're both fucking close to water.
I call frontsies!
Alrighty folks, this is it, the plan for Sunday July 21st...warning there will be a lot of eating and very little riding.  Expect to go halvesies on a lot of this since we're not looking to do full meals.

Meet up at GAP, 9:30a and head down to Bagel Hole to start off with old school bagels smothered in cream cheese and lox.  We'll roll down to Four and Twenty Blackbirds for some pie and coffee (or if you'd like they have savory pastries as well).

We'll saunter over the Brooklyn Bridge and ride to the west village to start off with a classic NYC street slice at Joe's.  Not feeling fat enough yet?  Let's grab some eclairs and croissants at Claude's around the corner!  Wait a minute, we need more french pastries...in the form of macaron icecream sandwiches at Payard's!

High on sugar, we'll pedal our way up to the Penn Station area to Sergimmo on the west side for Italian sandwiches.  To work off about 1% of the calories consumed thus far, we will coast down to the East Village and grab a lamb or pork bun or noodle dish at Xi'an's Famous Foods on St Mark's.

By now it'll be mid-late afternoon with the sun beating down on our heads and it'll be time to head back into Brooklyn...but not before stopping by Il Laboratorio del Gelato for a cold treat.

Back over the Manhattan bridge, we'll decide on an outdoor beer garden type of place (Greenwood Park, Hot Bird) or someplace dark, cool and air conditioned.  There are a few nice spots in Williamsburg, but I think it's a better idea to be close to home if drinking...

We shouldn't be any later than 5pm if we move at a glacial pace, and earlier if we don't linger at each spot for too long.

Brooklyn:

Manhattan:

Brooklyn:

  • Beer garden - Anywhere you guys want to go for some cold brews and/or food.

Things to bring:

  • Cash - Some establishments are cash only
  • Lock - I'll have a chain and a mini u-lock which can be used for 2 bikes.  Coordinate with each other if you want to share.
  • Lights - In case you end up staying out late drinking
  • Flat kit
Saturday July 27th ride will be nearly identical with the exception of swapping Sergimmo with Alidoro (who are only open Mon-Sat).
Crap i wish i was around for any of these.  Enjoy!
I think the best shot I have is finding everyone at the bier garten.
i might eat at every other stop.....with this heat we'll all be puking on our top tubes if we try to eat all that and pedal around town, even if we're only going 5km/hr!!
I realize just how much eating this is, so depending on how bloated you guys look, we may skip a couple of spots.

Lightweights.
Is this a no drop ride?

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be around for it this weekend.
I can meet later in the day, prob beer gardenish time but maybe a bit before.

Sorry dudes, I'm out for these dates - I know David had partly organized this as a lil' sendoff for me, but I just can't fit it in before I leave.  Yang, thanks much for putting this together (regardless of motivation) - sorry that I won't be there.

I like the idea of more of these types of casual, non-kit, non-hammertime rides - in addition to food and conversation, it lets everyone see everyone else's commuter whip and in their mild-mannered street clothes.
who's left?  we might need a show of hands......

you'll be missed, tito (not just on the food & drink ride - but there, too!)!

Aw man @tito, I was gonna send you off filled with NYC food.  Feel free to use the list to visit when you have time on your own.  Would still be pretty cool to have a little get together for you and Clifford (too bad Floris left early) for a "see ya" grub and pub ride.  Still interested?  Let me know the schedule and I'll try to set another one up.

@David #4 (aka Stearnsy) - if it's just the two of us, I'll be sure to bring romantic scented candles.
