Indoor Training, and Virtual Racing (ZWIFT)

Taking my mind off the election for a minute...

Good times racing with @RichFreeman last night. We chatted a bit on Zwift at the gate to coordinate the start and pace. I set my stopwatch for 4.5mins after start and off we went. There must be latency via Zwift chat and Rich had a delayed start so we lost about a minute trying to get back together. I was just under threshold for the minute when he caught up and we started rolling hard at VO2max (for me anyway).

We traded approx 1min pulls, but I started fading pretty hard halfway through: Not properly warming up + stress eating at dinner = Near upchuck. Thankfully Rich took over for the lions share of the pulls for a while and I was able to ease off a bit to recover in the second half. By the time we got to the last 5km I felt pretty good and we started pushing it.

And of course Zwift wouldn't be Zwift without my power meter crapping out several times. You can see in my timeline on Strava where my power stopped registering. There was a point around 20 mins in where it went blank for like a solid 10 seconds. Rich had to ease up and let me catch back on. Lost some time there sadly.

Even as a 2 man team, KCC finished 5th overall, +2:55 behind the winners, but I'm not sure the results on Zwiftpower accounts for the delayed start for each team. Strava says we did it in 44:42 vs Zwiftpower's 49:38 which matches up to the Strava time plus our 4:30 delayed start... :shruggie:

One annoying thing with the Zwift TTT format is that the game "stickies" you to another team on the road for a draft. Game etiquette calls for the team being passed to ease off and the passers go full gas. Towards the second half, a team of 4 very slowly passed us and even though we eased off a bit, they also eased off after passing us so we caught up to them and had to fall back yet again to give them a big enough gap. I think that was a misstep on my part and should have motored past them with Rich.

In any case, not too shabby for our first time out. I'm hoping with another rider or few, KCC will have pretty strong TTT results for the next one in 2 wks.

Thanks for dipping your toes in for the rest of us. I threw back a couple of glasses of red wine and a handful of children's melatonin. Slept 12 hours straight hoping to rip van winkle this nightmare.
Thats awesome! I bet trading pulls on zwift was challenging because you don't really feel the draft. Your lil character just goes faster at whatever effort you're putting out.
Yeah I've been on Zwift long enough on the same setup to sort of feel out the draft based on w/kg. Definitely trickier on hills. It may be different on a smart trainer.

One thing that helped was to change the game view to stationary overhead to see the gap in clear visual terms.
Good feelings on the virtual road last night. This format is much more enjoyable then you probably expect. Be great fun to get a full 6 man team ripping turns.

No points for for our TTT in the official Racing League scoring system. :-1:

Good practice though and we'll hopefully be ready with more riders next time.

Don’t worry; some things remain maddeningly uncertain, but it will get cold enough to drive me back indoors soon.
Sorry for the late post ya'll. I will sadly probably miss the race tonight in - wait for it - virtual Central Park while I sit in an office two blocks away from the real Central Park.

Assuming anyone interested has already done the Zwiftpower shuffle, here's the registration link:

Looking at the power numbers, if I somehow get into "race shape" I'll be back to mid pack fodder status, just like in real life!

BTW @RobertMullen you might need to join the KCC team on zwiftpower:

https://zwiftpower.com/team.php?id=12471

i sent a request to join KCC on zp, too. looking through the thread to see what else i'm missing.
Sorry I couldn't make it. Yesterday was the last "outside" time I'm going to have for a while; it was bloody cold but the projected snow arrived - about 3 or 4 inches. If it sticks it'll be Fatty time!
Alrighty, who is ready for another TTT?

Last time, Rich and I raced hard, but received no points because we didn't have 3 riders (time awarded to 3rd team rider to cross the finish line).

I am - like always - highly under trained, but am willing to give it another go. With another rider or three I know we can probably go pretty pretty pretty pretty fast.

Re: Start - Teams are given a delayed start time - KCC is 2.5 minutes. In order to communicate properly this time, I propose calling into a Slack or Zoom and one of us can be the stop watch keeper and give everyone the green light to start. Last time when I used Zwift's messaging system Rich saw a delayed message so we didn't get an optimal start.

WTRL TTT Start Procedure
Definitely read through the course  description, it's a rolling course with a few short climbs that will split a team apart if not careful. Not so much an issue with lots of riders, definitely a concern if we're at a minimum 3 riders...
In.
I'm in. For real this time.
Are y'all on the kcc slack?
Also in and on the slack
yessir! slack over discord?
which slack channel?

#zwift

Or I can set up a zoom or Google meets or something.
Got DQ'd from the last race - not sure why. Assume my midpack finish was too powerful.
I'm in. For real this time.
Reminder to create a profile on Zwiftpower.com, link your Zwift account and finally join the KCC team. On Zwiftpower your name *must* be appended with "(Kissena Cycling Club)" - for example, my profile name is "David Yang (Kissena Cycling Club)".

@David Yang Just joined! Waiting for confirmation I guess?

Looks like @RobertMullen also needs to join up

I requested to join a while ago but don't think I got the thumbs up yet.
I'm registered; which division?
Can I get a slack invite?
@Jules I think you're the keeper of the zwiftpower team account?

I didn't realize KCC slack channel doesn't have video/call conferencing.

Here's a zoom we can use. Dial in is fine - no vid necessary. This will be to coordinate the start and to communicate through the course to pace ourselves and talk through overtaking (or being overtaken) by another team on the field.
