I'm bringing this back not only because I am happy to see that Daniella is back on her bike, but also because I had ANOTHER such incident last night: Riding home at dusk in the rain with plummeting temperatures and a tail wind that caused me to move very quickly down the west side bike path. A jogger all the way to the right somehow looks a little squirrelly to me and so I move ALL the way to the left as we approach one of those yellow bollards. Without warning and without looking, he turns left across the bike path to make an unannounced U-turn around said bollard. I reacted instantly with loud noises and vigorous braking that sent me into a fish-tail (second of the day after an unrelated incident in the morning). Loud noises caused errant jogger to stop in his tracks and me to survive another day. This is why I hate the spring.

Glad to hear that you avoided any major injuries, other than a brief heart attack.  My dream is to do something to bring attention to this issue. I have heard so many stories since my accident that it is motivating me to make this issue public. I am a bit overwhelmed with where to start , but I think for now collecting stories relating to the path and how runners and pedestrians cause so many accidents in the bike lane. If you (all) would want to email me your stories so that I can compile something with more content than just my story? makeupwithdani@gmail.com and please write "bike path stories" in your subject line?

I'm wondering if working with the TA on this, NYCRR club, running stores like jack rabbit, and all the triathlon clubs to educate runners on skills necessary to run in a mixed use lane. and  signage on the path and bridges.

This posting is also a call for help on this. I will try to be motivated enough to start something, but would love help with getting the effort rolling or ideas, or help in how to say things and who its best to contact and etc. as, my specialty  is to complain and do nothing about it and not as a community organizer.

Had a great time on the group ride today.  I was especially happy to see everyone keeping it friendly but competitive with the town line sprints and hill efforts.  We'll all be better of come race time.  Before today I didn't realize how many town/state lines we cross.

Hudson River Park might be worth approaching. They are private and in charge of the bike path south of 59th St. I think Riverside park, which is part of NYC parks department, is in charge north of 59th St. My assumption is that they  all hate cyclists and would just want us to slow down. Definitely worth contacting TA as they already have the necessary connections and seem to be able to see things from different perspectives. Signs that say something like 'look before crossing' would be good.

When there are that many people in the park, you just shut it down bro. There's no point in even trying to do anything other than tediously easy laps. Seriously, you're just asking for trouble. At that point, the park is basically not meant for cyclists.

While I agree that anything other than slow cruising at a park on a nice, sunny day is asking for trouble, it is pretty amazing what parents allow their kids to engage in. I was there from 1-2ish today and the fully-across-all-lanes of kids zooming back and forth on scooters or throwing balls or riding in circles is just clueless and dangerous even if you're only going 14. Nobody wants them to get hurt and they shouldn't be restricted from having fun (there are plenty of places for them to do that stuff). But being considerate and conscientious of other park users is somehitng *everyone* needs to utilize. Which is why I came down so hard on Lance. What he was doing was the height of dangerous and rude. We don't need to call the girl dumb, but chastise her parents for not telling her to look before she makes sudden turns in what is supposed to be a bike lane. I'm not a stickler for rules, she just should have been told to be careful. BAD PARENTS! Again, as a non-parent, I'm excellent at giving out parenting advice.

Oh, and from yesterdays fun ride. I believe we forgot one of the most important rules of a group ride: You are responsible for the person behind you! This doesn't mean making them Lim rice cakes and bringing a patch kit for them, just be aware that some people are at different "fitness levels" (me? Chef-Boyardee light) and you need to check back every once in a while. It's not cool to let people get dropped and have them just roll back on their own without anyone knowing. They may be new and need directions, food, whatever. Big Love Happy Family. The end.

Re the video title: with criticism, it's always better to be specific, temporary and changeable than permanent and pervasive. Is the girl dumb or just unaware of the dangerous situation? Her parents should be ashamed.

It's obvious we weren't hammering, just cruising and talking - but I agree the smart move was to stay on the couch that day.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that we should have stayed home. On busy days in the park I simply change my approach to the ride - I come to a near or complete stop anytime the road is crowded, or coast very gingerly through. You can see this in the video (which makes it look like we were going faster than we were). I also give tons of space. Riding like that might not be the best way to get a workout, but I'm usually better off for the time in the saddle and out of doors. Besides, going slow and enjoying the park along with the rest of the holiday revelers is kind of fun.

This is something of a relief as I found it difficult to watch him weave in and out of the PP traffic on Easter Sunday. We all have our moments. They are inevitable in an overcrowded city with mixed use and variable speed. My advice is to meet those moments with humor and an effort to stay out of harms way. I was riding with the Ethicist in Central Park once.  He yelled at people who were walking erratically in the road and yelled at the private school which set up a sprint workout in the road as well.  I asked him if his actions were ethical.  I think you know the answer.

If I don't oversleep I plan to head out from BB @7 to do a quick ride out to Alpine and back. Have to be back to south Brooklyn by 11.
