Group Ride (Sat & Sun)

10705 comments · 111606 views

I'm still hoping it's a full 20 degrees, no wind and sunny on Sunday...that I can handle. Teens, cloudy, windy, that's seriously dangerous.

Funny though next week back to our regularly scheduled programming for winter in NYC. Mid 30s to mid 40s!
There is a wind chill advisory for Sunday. Stay inside Marc.

please don't get in the habit of setting arbitrary temp thresholds for when you'll ride outside.

Thanks JP. You of all people know that we've both ridden when it's 18. I guess I should have said 20-ish.
  • Issued by The National Weather Service

    New York City, NY

    4:04am EST, Fri Feb 12

  • ... WIND CHILL ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM SATURDAY TO NOON EST SUNDAY... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON HAS ISSUED A WIND CHILL ADVISORY... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM SATURDAY TO NOON EST SUNDAY. * LOCATIONS... METRO NEW YORK CITY AND NEW JERSEY AND LONG ISLAND. * HAZARD TYPES... POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WINDCHILLS. * TIMING... COLDEST WIND CHILLS LATE SATURDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. * WIND CHILL... AS LOW AS 20 TO 25 BELOW DUE TO TEMPERATURES OF 5 ABOVE TO 5 DEGREES BELOW ZERO... AND NORTHWEST WINDS 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH. * IMPACTS... THE FRIGID CONDITIONS WILL BE DANGEROUS TO THOSE VENTURING OUTSIDE. PROLONGED EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE FROSTBITE. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS... MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES. &&
so yeah...ugh...double bummed because Sarah and Peter are leaving for the weekend giving me unlimited time both days. Oh well, I've got floors to mop. Wishing I was set up for a zwift show-down or something w/ ya'll

you are most welcome for the reminder that you've been out below 20.

More importantly, as the old saw goes, "there is no such thing as bad weather, only insufficient clothing."

People can and do ride down below zero Fahrenheit.  They both have the gear and the desire to do so.

Looking at  your post, and consulting the hourly weather forecast, I'd suggest riding Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.
Brrrrrrrrr
Netflix and chill stay warm, people.  It's only bikes and it's only February.
i have half a mind to drive to Cunningham Saturday morning
Why?
It's much easier to stay warm off road...trees cut down on the wind...the lower riding speed = less wind...and the nature of the riding has you out of the saddle and moving about much more which keeps you warmer.  When I did nothing but mountain bikes...I would ride in almost any weather.  The real problem was the elastomer suspension would freeze turning my full boinger into a fully rigid hoopty

I'm signed up for 9:30 and 10:30a classes at Peloton on 23rd St tomorrow if anyone wants to join me for an indoor group ride?! ;) #mintempreqnotmet
Got out for a bit over three hours today.  Saw a few delivery guys, saw three coming east over the GWB as I was heading west, and then one more cyclist as I was finishing up. Of course, I did a wormhole ride, so off the common routes and away from wide roads and 9W.

Slow going.

I actually don't have the clothes to attempt a ride in this weather.  I wear my leg warmers and long tights...but I only have one pair of those....You really need 2 pairs of full length tights...thick thick wool socks and beastly pair of booties.  I think it's true that if you have the right clothes on you can ride in this....I would only go to a local park and turn circles though (rather ride inside)  cause if you get any kind of mechanical problems = trouble

I do fleece shorts under Gore Windstopper tights--all the panels are windstopper, with thicker panels over the knee and glutes.
I was wearing two sleeveless base layers, a long sleeve base layer, a jersey-thickness vest, and an Assos Fugujack.
I use ski gloves.
The feet are tricky for me.  My feet sweat even in these temps, so I still with thin-ish wool-blend socks and my regular windstopper shoe covers.
I also find hats and balaclavas uncomfortable, so stuck with a thicker ear band.

The other thing to to is stick with flatter routes, only using hills to warm up.

I agree that a flat tire would be awful.  I'd probably ride it flat until I found a place either indoors or at least not totally exposed to the wind. That's why I go with heavy tires.  And being able to change the flat in less than five minutes is critical.
Got out to Cunningham yesterday for 1h 45 min before the snow and my feet froze
first time I bought the new bike off-road
felt great , and must say I have become a disc brake fan
Who's gonna enjoy the great weather on Sunday?  I'm down for an Orchard's ride if someone else is.
I'm hoping for at least Rockland lake.  Orchard would be better, though I want to keep the pressure on the whole way.

And I'd love to try to kill the stateline Strava segment  on the low road.

REGARDLESS, For those who haven't been out, it's one week to the All Hands on Deck ride, so if you haven't been across the GWB in a while, do come out and make it to Piermont to build up your endurance.  Season starts in a bit over two weeks.

@Scott Kuhlke what/where is Orchard's?
I loves those Giants
Sean's in a Brendan sandwich!  I also win the cluttered handlebar award.

Good to see you guys today.
Hey guys, I’m a new’ish member and would like to meet some team faces. I’m game to join in up to Piermont or Nyack. Are you all planning a 9am departure from the Jersey side of GWB?
yes.

He's referring to the Orchard of Conklinville.  It's about a 3.5 hour roundtrip from the GWB.  It's atop a stair-step hill.
Sweet, thanks @mugwump .

Chances are I'll just follow JP ... I hear of the Orchards but haven't been yet.  I'll be at BB at 8 ... hopefully not late

FWIW, and many probably know this already, but the Orchards are CLOSED for the season. So don't count on that as a food/drink refuel location. If you go up Little Tor though to the right, there is a gas station/convenience store on the backside of that mountain. It adds a few miles to the ride, but the Little Tor climb is one of the best/hardest we have around here.
Great day to be out.

I was met at the bridge by Scott, Max, Dave, and I'm spacing on the last guy (sorry).  Scott turned around at the bridge.  Sean chased us down before the East Clinton descent.  (where was everyone else?  Did no one else get the memo regarding the weather).

I went on at Sparkill.  Not too many people out in the lands of the Wormhole.  Climbed to the Orchard, took the sweet corkscrew descent behind it, and motored on home. (strava folks can see the ride on my feed)

(BTW, it too me just over 3.5 hours bridge-to-bridge).
