But first in our hearts.

Steel is real.
Headed out early with some friends from work , Saw Jeff C on the way back . a lot of folks on the road
Reminder that there is a Meet Kissena ride this Saturday, 8am BB, 9am GWB.  We'd appreciate as many Kissena bodies as possible!  Thanks!
Hi Jill, Looking forward to the ride on Saturday. Which side of the BB do

Saturday, Meet Kissena Ride, Who's coming?
I'm at a professional training all day tomorrow so will miss meet Kissena but plan to be on my first post-Brusitis group ride Sunday. It's been nearly 2 months, looking forward to riding with y'all.
Great turnout on the Meet Kissena ride today. We just did a short ride to market due to the cold. I think there were 6 or 7 prospective members. There were a couple of mechanical issues, one resulting in a team building exercise requiring us to push one person from 9W to strictly as a wire tore his derailer off of his bike! It was a good group. Thanks to David H, Kaley, and Jeff for coming out to lead the ride!
Nice job on getting out there with the cold temps.  Looks like we're going to have new teammates.
Sunday, 8am BB.  I'll be there.
A massive team event today!  Dozens of Kissena teammates all over the place, some I haven't seen since the weather turned cooler, some I'd never met before, some brand spanking new.

I met a group at the BB 8am and we hung out for a little extra time just in case there were some stragglers.  It was 38 and windy and made us feel it but the sky was sharp and clear and it was a tailwind up the Westside.  With such a large group, on Riverside we stopped at lights, or eased through when everything was clear.  Not too much traffic out on the roads and not too many cyclists out yet.

We met another group up at the GWB and after getting some instructions from JP, rode out with what must have been 20 riders.  An impressive turnout.  We took 501 to Rockleigh, rode a few laps and regrouped.  JP talked about turning and crits and we practiced on the first turn a couple of times.  We regrouped again and rode 3 warmup laps and then a couple of hard ones, with John M jumping off the front.
I put my hand up to demonstrate to Cat 5s how to gracefully get the hell out of a race.  Recovering from a bad cold, I didn't want to push myself too hard, figuring 70 miles would be just fine, without having to throw in some crit efforts.

It was helpful to me, listening to cornering techniques and practicing a couple of times.  And the simulated race laps turned something on in me so that I started looking at the tactics again, looking for open spots.  Yang squeezed between two riders, an impressive, assertive move.  Someone swept from my right in front of me and took off to fill a gap on a turn - another impressive move.  Yes, just those few laps fanned the ember of the racing coal burning deep in my psyche.
My thanks to JP for organzing that.

We broke up into groups after that, some turning for home, and others heading to the Market for coffee.  Holy Cow, the Market was absolutely jam packed with riders. I think some may have taken off after seeing the line, but I got my coffee and it was warm enough to sit outside and stare at everyone's bikes lined up.

A group of about 10 of us finally pushed off, climbing the Observatory where I was able to revisit that coffee after the steep hill.  Along 9W, Jeff organized a rotating paceline for quite a few miles.

After crossing the GWB, we spied Bertucco heading out for a ride.  Good to see you.

And then we shed riders every couple of miles until 5 of us crossed Christopher for the Manhattan Bridge.

A solid ride today and great to see so many teammates.  My legs are sore, I'm actually sun, and wind burned.  I ate all of my leftovers and passed out for a couple of hours.

Hoping to hear other impressions about the crit and ride.

a few photos I took today...

...
Fantastic to see so many newer members and familiar faces out today. Impressed and intimidated by how strong and motivated everybody was. Rockleigh practice run gave me good insight on what I need to work on (EVERYTHING), but also that I really really really love racing in all of its painful glory.

This was only the second time I've been on a bike for longer than an hour and half in months - Marc's Central Park ride last week being the first - so yeah, the 60 or 70 or whatever miles I did today beat me up.

Wish I stayed for coffee but had to get home ASAP. Good crew on 9W with Jeff Condon taking the final sprint, he is going to be a beast as usual this year. And Alice surprised us blokes by catching up to us across the GWB and we soft pedaled it down  Riverside together. Good times.

I hope we try for some paceline and leadout drills in the coming weeks. Kissena has a fine tradition of capturing sprint point jerseys at prospect park due to concerted teamwork!

While we haven't done it for a few years, I will try to revive an event that might address this.  Namely, the Kissena day at the track with road bikes.

Essentially, we ride out to the Kissena Velodrome in Queens, we work on paceline skills, some practice attacking/bridging, and then leadouts.

The track is good for leadouts for a number of reasons.  No cars, no cross traffic, no peds.  A short course where we can observe everything going on, and where it's easy to stop, discuss, get going again.

Thanks, JP, for organizing this event!  Also, thank you to Eloy for taking all the wonderful photos!
A quick reminder. I love it when the club uses my photos, but you must, you have to give me credit. My handle is @groovylab everywhere.

Shouldn't apply just to my photos. If you use a piece of content that someone other than you created, give them credit. This is so stupid basic.

Doing this correctly is also likely to help raise the number of social media followers.

Please, and thanks.
I'm glad so many could make it.

Rolling out with the huge pack felt, and looked, awesome.  I hope the "new" descent we took in Tenafly was agreeable to everyone.  It was good to go hard in Rockleigh and I hope everyone gained something from the ride.  The only regret was that more didn't show.  (oh, and that we didn't to an organized lead out to take the Strava segment at the Stateline.  One of these days)

As for the rest of my ride, I realized on the far side of Clausland mtn, that I had to be downtown by 1, so I climbed the big hill, descended, and rode hard down 9W, hoping to pass by some groups and eventually help drive one to the bridge.

Which I did.  It's always a great carrot to see folks up the road and work on chasing them down.  And if I am the carrot for a group, that's great, too.

Unfortunately, the group I ended up with, which I had passed and then caught me back a few miles later, needed a refresher course in pace lining.  If I could have dropped them without attacking them, I would have.  I probably should have just drilled it and let them sit on.

Good workout though.
The mob assembles...
Great riding with everyone! Thanks to JP for making it happen.
I'm looking for 3 volunteers to run the MEET KISSENA RIDE on Saturday, March 26th.  Please help out if you can, otherwise the ride will be cancelled.  PM me or post on the Meet Kissena thread.  Thanks!
This Saturday, Marc Bertucco has offered to give a Grant's Tomb course review.  It will take place after the Women's race in CP is done, so probably around 9am meeting at Grant's Tomb.  (Might be later as we'll likely have to wait for the podium sess ;), am I right?!)  Thumbs up this post if you're interested in joining us.
I think a lot of people racing Grant's will be racing Branchbrook on Saturday morning so might be tough to make it back by 9am.  Highly recommended though, Marc knows the best super secret lines through the corners on this course.
I am one of those people. I'm sure it's not nearly as informative, but I'd be down for some Grant's Tomb recon after the sunday group ride...
Sunday ride? Usual time. Any takers?
I'm away tomorrow. Headed upstate for a few days. Have fun though! ps, if anyone know of decent rides between port Jervis and the catskills, let me know!
I will be at the BB
I'll be at BB tomorrow morning too
