Group Ride (Sat & Sun)

10705 comments · 111606 views
I'm riding from Harlem to Kissena for the sunday track session.

I'll meet anyone who wants to ride from Manhattan at 59th street and 5th ave, at the southwest corner.

9:10 to meet.  9:15 to roll.
Looks pretty rough out here in eastern Queens.  Playing it by ear, but sadly might be yet another trainer ride tomorrow morning. *sad trombone*
For some very strange reason I'm enjoying the trainer this spring. Can't say that's happened in years.

It was hella windy, that's fo sho.

Ricky and I decided it was good for us and rode out to the track and back (climbing the QBB), because crosswinds and climbing are the bomb.

And, because my son wanted to ride, he and I did two hours in the afternoon rolling around The Bronx and Randall's Island.

Respect to the Sunday trackies, it was brisk!

Tres amigos Saturday.
I'm thinking of heading to Cunningham Saturday morning,
Any body interested?
damn it I missed this....
Who's up for New Member ride Sunday April 1 - 8am BB/9am GWB?
unfortunately i'm upstate this weekend 4/1 beginning the moving process :(
I'll be at BB at 8am.
It's Easter! If it wasn't I would definitely be there.
Should we really be accepting a new member that is not at home watching "FLANDERS" :)
^ Mark, I did actually prefer to name the ride Heathens who'll Meet Kissena and Watch the end of Flanders at Piermont Bikes ride. It just didn't A/B test that well.
I will roll in the park, 8:00 AM Tavern, everybody welcome to join
Calling all Kissenas, we have 10 new member candidates joining us tomorrow. Please join if you can swing it. 8am BB/9am GWB — RR to Piermont.
@JohnMalcolmson Thant’s awesome. Sorry I can’t make it
I'll be there. 8:00 BB
I expect to be there as well.

I want to take people over the ploegstreets of Rockland, and the one cobbled berg of Bergen, and finish with a cobbled berg in Harlem to honor De Ronde.  But it takes a bit of extra time and mileage to pull it off.
I thought i wasn't gonna make this ride but it looks like i'll be there. 8@bb (well... let's be honest, more like 8:10... I'll catch up, as always)
I had a nice ride up to the GWB with Jim, meeting him at the BB and waiting for anyone else who may show.  While it was overcast and there was wind, there was no biting cold and it was one of those days where whatever you wore, it wasn't quite right, with the sun ducking behind the clouds but the temps rising slowly.

Impressive to find a whole group of people looking to go on the Kissena ride on the other side of the bridge, one of whom I recognized from the Cat 5 race last week, and after weeks and months of solo riding and indoor training, I said hello to John, Will, Brian who rolled in and JP and with some simple small talk, pleasantries exchanged, I was reminded about why I joined the team, and how isolating indoor training can be.

Honestly great to see everyone this morning.  And great hearing lessons for the new crew about group riding and pacelining, things I need to work on each spring.

Time constraints forced me to turn back right away, but I'm looking forward to joining more Sunday rides this season.  I mean, who else in this enormous city understands the woes of a cracked jockey wheel or the badge of honor from a grease-smeared headtube where bearings have been replaced?

It was, of course, a headwind home and I cranked hard to go about 13mph on the bike path.

I hope the rest of the ride went well.
I hope it went well for the possibly new guys.

We took River Road rather than the usual route.  In general, I think it better to do a flatter route with people of unknown strength, but the plus is no cars.  We rode steady to the end, where people chose the pace they wanted to climb.

Regrouped at the top, rode steady until the drop before stateline, where John showed everyone he can still crank out massive wattage.  Regrouped again and rode to Piermont.

Most of the group went back from Piermont.  We first discussed the mechanics of a rotating pace line.  Hope it was easier to ride than discuss.

I took two guys, Alex (I think) and ??, up around Clausland.  Interesting note: Alex's dad promotes Jingle Cross in Iowa City and promoted the CX world cup race there.  It explained the Telenet UCI socks he was wearing.
This is so cool

Ah, Alex had told me his Dad promoted CX in Iowa but I didn't put it together. Very nice. I think your other companion was Said. Hope they were good climbing companions.

We took the Observatory back up and then got a nice rotating paceline going on 9W. For the most part it went well though we did end up dropping one rider who asked us to carry on without him.

John showed his watts again at the gas station and the rise before Strictly.

Nice time on the bike and great to meet some potential new members.

Cross posting from training camp thread:

Kissena is organizing a riding weekend away in the Catskills this Spring.

What should you expect? A weekend of enjoying beautiful roads with teammates.

The roads be a nice change from our usual options, we’ll seek new coffee shops and enjoy dinner together.

What we need is to determine what weekends work for most of us. Once we pick the best date and have a tentative headcount, we will present a specific weekend with an Airbnb that should keep costs low.

We are looking at May 19-20, May 26-27, or June 2-3. Note that the second option is Memorial Day weekend. We avoided weekends during which there are races in Prospect Park.

What will the weekend look like?

The plan is to carpool Friday night giving us two full days off riding. Returning home Sunday afternoon.

We will pre-plan some routes, provide ridewithgps files, even include some alternatives. If you know the area, let us know.

After breakfast Saturday we head out to ride. Endurance/tempo pace in the morning keeping the group together. Stop for lunch, after which, we can split into subgroups; some continuing at a similar pace, others attacking local climbs, others opting to head back to the Airbnb.

After cleaning up, we will have dinner together.

Sunday morning, a different route which will again provide different options. The masochists amongst us will definitely tackle Devil’s Kitchen.

After showers and lunch we’ll head home.

We’ll share transportation to and from the Catskills.

Please let us know which of these weekends you are available as by April 8th so we can plan accordingly.

Click on the link to the poll and let us know what dates work for you. Thanks!
