I still hope to be there but don't wait on me... work always interrupting the important business of bike time!!
We’ll roll through river road before getting back on to 9w if you’re running late.
Really fun ride, but jeez, the heat completely sapped me for the last hour and a half or so.

Had a great time with everyone! Glad I tagged along for Bradley Tweed. Adam was very impressive on the climb - amazed he raced and did 9W to the market yesterday.

I think I gave JP an arm workout from pushing me forward several times on the pace line.

Another shoutout to Dave who rescued me toward the end.

Looking forward to the next one!
a few butt photos from today

The heat is real out there. I sit in overly air conditioned offices most of the week and foolishly thought I could go long today in the heat. Halfway down 9W I was getting goosebumps in full 95 degree sun exposure and knew I was kaput. I eventually gave up on the paceline (thankfully we were nearly to the bridge). James and Richard were kind enough to roll easy with me and after we regrouped, we found a nice water fountain near? below? Columbia and dumped water on ourselves which helped. I was previously running at 150-160 bpm HR putting out minimal watts and the breeze + water + shade brought me down to a reasonable 120-140. The last 10 miles back home through shade-less Northern Blvd was torture, but I made it by dumping the rest of the water on myself. Macedonia gravel ride should be interesting next week...

But on to the good stuff
  • Sorry we missed Brian and David V. and any others. Next time, friends.
  • Everyone looking sharp as helllll
  • Adam and Stephen had all the legs today
  • Had Spongebob's very yellow face on my socks
  • Basemiles, pros
  • Pinch flatted after I hit a giant rock in the rough section on river road
  • Won the state line sprint, though I think It was just me and JP and only I really took it seriously
  • JP doing the aero tuck all day
  • Richard "droping teh hamerrr" on me up Bradley/Tweed and I was on the struggle bus the rest of the day
  • James chilling at endurance pace still crushes it up the inclines
  • Espresso machine broken at Piermont :(
  • JP organized a nice paceline back down 9w - joined by a random strong rider (JP might know him)
  • Had said breakdown above and rolled with minimal watts back
  • I think the last bit of water I dumped on myself in Queens screwed up my HRM and I was reading 243 bpm for a while. Either that or I entered a different phase of existence for a few miles.

The guy who joined up with us was Darren Jeffries.  OG racer.  He was on Kissena for a year or two, possibly 1996 or thereabouts--before my time on Kissena.  Raced as a cat 1 or 2 back then.  Embarrassingly, I didn't realize it was he for some time.

I feel I should apologize to Dave and Richard.  I didn't realize how bad you guys were feeling.  If I had, I would have suggested either stopping at Strictly and using their hose for a shower, or the kids water feature in that park on Fort Washington and 175th.

In 2020, on one of my solo weekend rides, I ended up melting on 9W.  Amazingly, one of the buildings in Englewood Cliffs had the sprinkler on at like 2pm on a Sunday.  I stopped and used it as a shower.  Really helped.  Don't be afraid to tell others you're melting.
we were going to stop at strictly for the hose out back, but learned that NJ / Bergen county is under boil water advisory for e.coli!! so on the way down riverside we were keeping an eye out for fountains and street vendors.
I’d also say this was in no way JP’s fault/no apology is needed.

There are elements beyond a ride leader’s control. Speaking for myself, I felt fine for most of the ride, and leaving Piermont I thought my legs were just a bit frustrated from my Saturday ride to Piermont. Didn’t really dawn on me that the heat was severely impacting me until JP told me to hang in the back of the pace line (a very nice way of saying, ‘you’re fried, kiddo’).

I feel really bad about Darren Jeffries. I thought he was a complete rando and said some crude words to him after he pushed me forward. A nice gesture on his part, but if I don’t know someone, I tend to be a bit standoffish. I’ll dm him to apologize.
@RichardKaufmann lol I also gave Darren some shit. He was hanging at the back of the rotating pace line about 1 bike length behind the last person on the right line so every time I got back there I couldn’t tell if he was joining the rotation or just sucking wheel and if I should go ahead of him or if he was going to move up. He ended up pulling and we broke bread after that.

July 30th Connecticut Ride

This Saturday, I'll be doing a ride up in CT and anyone is welcome to join!

Outbound Train
7:02 AM Grand Central > 8:18 AM New Canaan (Xfer in Stamford)
You can purchase a ticket ahead of time on the MTA app or in the station. The round trip off-peak ticket is $23.

The Route
This is the route I am planning. I have never done this full route but have done portions of it before. The route bring us through some nice towns. We could stop for lunch as well if we'd like but we can figure that out later.

Return Train:
My guess is we'll be home around 4PM back at GCT - Trains run about every 30 min so getting a train back is easy.

If you're in, throw some hotness on this post!
Last call for the ride above! If I don’t get any takers I may hop on an earlier train/change route so let me know if you plan on joining by tonight!
I'll be joining you!
JoãoPereira-Webber and I headed out early for New Canaan. Started off strong, headed up to Ridgefield. We were in Danbury before we know it and continued on up to New Milford. We stopped in New Milford for some refreshments and picked up some dried mango, trail mix, peanut butter pretzels, and fruit loops. I hear this is the mix that tipped the scales for Jonas Vingegaard.

After refueling we set off towards Bethel. We had to detour a bit as a road was closed because of an Irish Road Bowling Competition. We passed my personal favorite supermarket, Stew Leonards, and just as we entered Bethel, Joaoa got a flat. Taught him how to perform field surgery in the parking lot of Sycamore Drive In. We decided to forgo the double bacon cheeseburger and beer though. We continued on and eventually rolled back into New Canaan after putting in THE WORK. I asked the barista at Starbucks for “the most refreshing shit you got” which resulted in a passion fruit mango lemonade. Joao then casually mentions that this was his longest ride ever so major kudos to him for pumping out 6k while doing it. All in all an awesome day!

Anyone wants to ride tomorrow? Early start to beat the rain. 8am at GWB?
Beat the heat.
I'll be there.
Just posted on the cyclocross topic. I'll ride on the trail in Long Island both days this weekend. Rocky Point most likely. Saturday on the mountain bike and Sunday on the cross. Let me know if you want to join. I can even pick you up at the Ronkonkoma train station. 917 797 7292.

Thanks @Mark Taylor ! I rode up to piermont, got a coffee and headed home. First ride of that length for me in a while and I'm still kinda gun-shy about my ankle so kept it nice and steady, railed some descents and enjoyed that it wasn't miserably hot out

Not sure if Loop Sharp is happening tomorrow, but I'll be out bright and early at GAP at 630 for anyone whose interested.
