GW meet up time 9 Am for sunday?
For anyone wanting a midday ride Saturday, Voytek and I will be meeting on the NJ side of the GWB at 12:30

Patrick
Yes, the Kissena "Sunday Ride" meets at 9 am. Distance wise, Dan is right on. Some turn back at Sparkill, and it sounds like JP at least wants to get in a solid 70 miles that day, so that's the Orchards.
Andrew, if you scroll to the top,or start, of this thread, I have listed lots of info about this ride.

All, we have three sundays left before the season begins for many. For those who haven't been getting out for distance, think about this coming sunday (tomorrow, 2/12/11) as a build day. As in you're building your endurance. Yes, we will be, and should be, going hard at points (up some hills and rumbling back on 9W), but if you haven't been out much, I recommend considering an intermediate goal tomorrow. Like if you haven't gone long this year, or in several weeks, and you're coming from Brooklyn, consider riding to Sparkill and then turning back. Next Sunday, if you think you can handle it, ride longer. Two weeks from Sunday, ride harder.

And remember that if you feel like you've overdone it on the ride, you can hop a train on the NY side of the GWB.

To me, turnaround points are East Clinton Ave, Closter Dock, Sparkill, Nyack, Christian Herald Road, Rockland Lake South, Rockland Lake North, 303, and then the orchard. Don't know if we'll be going all the way to Conklinville.

Also, there may be some inclination to sprint for town line signs on the low road. Considering the size of the group, the road conditions (namely the proliferation of potholes and the narrowness of the road), I think this is a bad idea. Please skip the sprinting until we're on wider, smoother roads and smaller groups.
Anyone from Brooklyn going? I plan to be at Brooklyn Bridge at 8am. I'll wait 5 minutes. Then head up the west side bike path to meet the rest of the folks at the bridge.

I will be turning back at Sparkill. I am slow. Recovering from an incredibly annoying muscle injury last fall.

Eric
A quick ride report: we had a nice size group. Dan R, Eric M, Jim, Jeff, Ben, and I met at Brooklyn Bridge at 8AM. We met a few others at the GW. I think the group totaling about 9 OR 10 folks rolled on the kissena route up to Sparkill. At that point, a group turned back and Gideon, JP, Jeff and myself headed up to Rockland Lake. Turned into a really nice ride with some hard work on the hills and tempo on 9W.

Looking forward to seeing more people out on the Sunday rides in the next few weeks, especially as the weather gets nicer.

Mike
MY ride report:

I'm in Philly this weekend. Had a great interval session yesterday on West River Drive. Got a flat in my 2+ year old Michelin ProRace3 front tire. Second flat ever for that one - good work, lil buddy!

Today: Lenny Klipper hipped me to the local head-bang session, an INTENSE 4 hours slog called the Wreck 'Em Ride. we started on the edg of the suburbs just ouside manyunk then rode somewhere nrth and west. after 1.5 hours, we stoppped, everyone took off their jackets and we racedaround a 5 mile loop. alex bremmer (NYC boy, columbia university, raced with my pal Peter Horn in Belgium) was there - he and i worked together for most of the first lap before he rode me off his wheel. i was very aggressive in the first lap and a half out of three, then took it easy. turns out, we were only doing 2 laps, rather than 3, but i played it smart in the echelons (very windy!) and was in 4th position off the front of the group when we came through the finish and everyone stopped. whatever! about 30 dudes out today, most of them very nice.

a hard hard day with some serious climbs, but overall, great. almost cramped on the ride home, but i'm back at Nicola's house, rehydrating and trying to find some ibuprofen. typin not so good.

this has been the first week of riding my new whhhip (cannondale caad9, 56cm) outdoors and it just feels better and better as i get the position more stretched out. Al gave me a setback thomson to replace my straight, and once i get a 130 stem, it's going to be perfect. hilarious to think that i started out riding 52 and 53cm road bikes. what was i htinking?!?

only quibble about the bike: i replaced the stock 440gram full-carbon cannondale fork with a weight weenie easton ec90 Sl (330 grams). turns out, the bike is TOO STIFF for such a modest fork! my front brake pads rub when i trque the bars. looks like i'm going back to the old one - weight on a fork probably doesn't matter much compared to the handling it will bring.

looking forward to seeing you dudes soon.
Two more Sundays before the road season officially begins.

Let's have a bigger crowd this coming Sunday. And it's all hands on deck next Sunday.
Was looking forward to riding with the club this week-end. It won't happen. Coming back from what would have been a three hour ride to Syosset, I was hit on the side from the rear on Union Turnpike near the Creedmor psychiatric center. The driver came in from a side road with a yield sign, she "did not see" me, because she was being cautious, so while accelerating she was looking far behind me to see that no car was coming... It was quite frightening to see my right foot/ankle go under the tire. It removed my sidi from my foot. I'm beaten up, everything I was wearing needs to be replaced, but nothing is broken. I just hope ligaments and other stuff other than bones will not prevent me from riding soon with you.
Stephane,
That is awful.
Heal up soon!
Isn't that why cars have mirrors? Anyway, hope it's nothing serious and you get better quickly.
Jeez Stephane,

Get better soon. I hope there are no long term injuries. please keep us up to date.
Sorry about your knockdown Stephane... speedy healing to you!
Get well soon!
Since Stephane was training in prep for htis ride, I hope others are taking that kind of focus into consideration and are planning on coming out in force this Sunday.

After being here through the winter so far, I'm taking this weekend away, but I know that Marc, Mike, and others are planning to come out. We only have two more weekends before the season officially begins, so now is the time to start coming out, getting your road legs back, shaking out the group riding cobwebs and riding with those you'll be racing with this season.

I'll be following on the web, and I expect to read we had a great turnout, especially when you consider the weather will be superb.
I will be riding tomorrow, about 55 miles round trip from the Gwb. Anyone want to join me? It will be a shorts & jersey day. I'm flexible on the when, anytime from 10-1pm at the Gwb will work

Thanks
tito and i are doing a mellow ride over the GWB starting at 9am

an hour north and an hour back
I will be out this Sunday for the club ride. Starting 8AM at Brooklyn Bridge at the Tillary Entrance. Looking forward to seeing teammates out.

As always this is a great opportunity to see and ride with the folks you'll be racing with this season.
Stephane:

Heal quickly. Like you, I've rode thousands of miles along Union Turnpike to and from Forest Hills. Along most sections, I don't feel comfortable. There are a lot of intersections and many drivers who seemingly have never seen a cyclist. As soon as you feel up to it, head back out there!
2 Sundays left before the first race of the 2011 road season in NYC. It's been a rough winter, and I'm as guilty as anyone else for missing out on some opportunities to ride with the club this year, but I'm looking forward to turning that trend around this weekend.

I'm going to set like 15 alarms and tell my wife I HAVE to get up on time (which ensures she will poke me with a pointy stick until I get up), to make sure I'm on the Jersey side of the GWB by 9am.

This ride is pretty much self-run, but I'll be there to "lead" it as much as it needs. I plan to go to Rockland Lake before I turn south for home. I expect smaller groups will turn around at the usual spots (e.g. Sparkill, just before Piermont) depending on individual scheduling needs.

Come out, ride with your teammates, speak braggadociously about how we're going to grind other lycra-clad cyclists into a fine powder that will be placed into a musketoon (google it) and shot into the weeds this racing season. Size each other up. Who's ready for the podium? Who's ready for a bigger pair of shorts? (Me! I went all Jan Ulrich this winter) Who's building and ready to work? What kind of super-delux post-race bagel will you dine on with your cut of the prize money? NYC, Branchbrook, Bethel? Which spring series do you have your eye on?

P.S. As a former outlier who tagged along on Kissena group rides for years (and only occasionally made to feel like an outcast ;-) haha) I personally welcome all your friends on this ride even if they haven't seen the light yet. Also, it appears that a few ex-Kissena's have been spied riding out there solo or with small groups this winter; and I know a lot of you still keep in touch, so if they want a group to ride with on Sunday, they're welcome to join us too.
I will be there too this sunday (Feb 20th). It should be nice, above freezing, and the wind from Saturday should have died down.

I will meet up with the Brooklyn Contingent at 8AM at the Tillary Entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge to ride up the west side.
i'll be there on sunday with former-kissena Al and my college pal David
Anyone interested in a long slow ride (4-5 hours), I'm going to head out from the Jersey side of the GWB at 9am. And when I say slow, I mean SLOW. 220 watts or less. Yes there are humps along the way that require a few more watts to get my big old jelly belly over, but other than that, I'm keeping it easy.
If I'm not still sick ill try to limp along as well on my Shaq bike.
this is where working at a shop EVERY weekend bums me out.
I'll try to be there. The good news is I was able to ride on my trainer today. The bad news is that my Ti Legend is totalled: frame, fork, shifters, brake levers, handlebars, wheels... OK, you got the picture. I was wondering how my right foot got out of my Sidi shoes. I thought the closing system broke. It's intact, it's the leather that was ripped when my foot got caught under the wheel. Yes, I do feel I'm lucky. Went to the place of the accident. At the exit of the Glen Oaks Campus (now officially "The Queens High School of Teaching, Liberal Arts and the Sciences") onto Union Turnpike, the driver had two road signs, the first a 15 mph limit, the second a Yield sign. I guess she was prepared to yield to another car on Union Turnpike she would have seen. This reminded me of a friend who 30 years ago was racing at the highest level internationally on a motorcycle but stopped riding his motorcycle in Paris.
I'm planning on rolling out for the group ride this Sunday. It's been a long while. I've been cobbling some fitness together over the past few weeks: some time with Professor Kreitler during the week and a few park workouts on weekends. So I hope my heart lungs and legs can get me to Bunbury's for some espresso and pastry to fuel a retreat back to Brooklyn. Looking forward to seeing you all...
Sorry everyone....I meant to say that SATURDAY I'm going to be riding slow...Sunday, I'm doing the group ride of course.
Hey all. New to the team this year - have been doing the Computrainer sessions with Neil, Eric, Rich, Jeff, Joe, Josh, etc. on Wednesday nights. Won't be able to ride on Sunday (taking our kids upstate for the long weekend) but plan to get in a solo ride up around Albany. Definitely will plan to roll out with you all the following Sunday, though. Looking forward to it!
Dear Sunday Riders -- I'm opting-out of this morning's ride... it's too cold and windy. I really love the cold, but it's my sweaty hands! They freeze at these temps and stay that way... making the operation of a bicycle a rather precarious task.

Regrets,
Norm
