My Rival sets from 2010 and 2012 are still going strong after several seasons/crashes and zero maintenance. Can't say I'd rather have them over, let's say, Dura Ace or Record, but they're cheap and they've been very reliable for me.Marc Bertucco said:Related...what's up with SRAM shifters? I 3rd Yang's experience. No issues with mine. Maybe mine do well from benign neglect. My Force shifters on my CX bike which have been doing nothing more than collecting dust and occasional rides for the last 3 year, are shifting better than ever.

I am still on an original SRAM Red group...not sure what year that was but its got to be 6+ years now. Never had a problem. It is a simple design that makes "clunky" shifts...but it just works and the brifters are really light. Taking weight off the front of your handlebars feels great,

My shifters haven't given me a real issue up until this point. Any strange behaviors can probably be attributed to either my fiddling with them or crashing them. The 2-year warranty on my shifters expired 2 months ago but they're still warrantying it.
Only my left shifter broke. The shift lever snapped internally, not at a hinge; a solid piece of metal broke. In recognition of the fact that its shifters should not be snapping when they are only 2.1 years old, SRAM is warrantying both the front and rear shifters! I'll soon receive two brand new shifters. If they give me the newer model year (mine were 2012), it will even be an upgrade! Weeeee!
I don't think reliability is a reason to buy or not buy any company's shifters. Any modern company is going to warranty anything that breaks unless it's ancient and can't be expected to work anymore (or if a wear and tear part simply wears down). In my case the catastrophic failure of a solid metal part does not look good for them, so they opted to give me new shifters.

I stand by what I said. 2.1 years of rigorous daily use, then I get new $400 shifters for $0? I'm a happy customer.
Recall that Mr. Perlberg's Dura-Ace shifters failed earlier this year as well. These devices are mechanical and they will all fail after a time.

Vlad, stop trolling. Drawing conclusions about shifter reliability from 1 anecdote is the definition of illogic. Things break. If you want to use my one data point as a statement about all SRAM shifters, and then use that one data point about one SRAM shifter to conclude that all SRAM shifters are inferior to all Shimano/Campagnolo/Microshift shifters, be my guest! I'm not trying to win the brand war here. I just wanted people to know SRAM seems good with warranties and let them know they needn't buy new shifters if theirs break.
Teammate Of the Century Phillip Maronilla has already provided me with a substitute shifter that is currently on my bike. A perfectly enjoyable opportunity to try out SRAM Apex while I wait for my new shifters.

I'm not trolling Brendan, I think your statement is ridiculous. Warranties are important, but that doesn't make it ok for manufacturers to neglect quality. SRAM has developed a reputation for lower quality, hence Marc's question. I'm not trying to hate on them or impose my opinion of what's superior. I'm just calling you out on saying "hey guys, it's ok for stuff to break because they'll send you another." You ride hard enough, your stuff will break and sometimes you'll get it warranteed. That's nothing new. Welcome to the club Brendan.

FWIW, I'm on my 3rd pair of sram rival shifters and they've never been warranty replaced. All used for cross. Very low mileage, but certainly hard usage. The current iteration are all fucked up and bent already without any crashes... I think just from being put in the trunk of the car.
The dura ace probably have 15 to 20 times the miles... failed once and Shimano replaced them once for free.
I know my anecdote isn't really a fair comparison, but SRAM does have quality issues, especially with their shifters.
I've had amazing customer service from SRAM for my quarq, but if I was to rebuild my drive trains on my cross bikes I'd go all Shimano.

My CX bikes still have shimano 9 speed stuff because it works. My road bikes have campy 10 speed. They work, they can be rebuilt. Good stuff. No warranty needed.

Michael, what broke with your shifters that they wouldn't warranty? Did you use your Dura-Ace shifters on the road or for cross? I would expect cross shifters to die more quickly from exposure.
I think SRAM shifters might require more frequent cleaning, but I don't have any Shimano shifters to compare them to (my gf's 105 shifters have about that many miles on them). It seems like the pawls on SRAM's shifters are more exposed to the elements.
Looking back, I think I did actually already warranty my front left shifter when I complained about how the reach adjust feature no longer worked. Maybe about 6 months after I got it?

@Brendan even my Ultegra brifters on the dirty old Trek are at 11 years, a bazillion shifts, dumped a couple of times — still rocking.
