Nathanial made a decent point on today's ride - I never clarified that I am *Not* the dude in the red spiderman shame-suit. I'm the guy in the Siggi's kit. His name is Javier Menendez and he's both a super nice guy and a rock solid safe-as-they-come wheel in a bunch... he just can't help himself from attacking like 80km from the finish... but heck, he still landed on the podium. The other guy with all the muscles is some kind of shape-shifter-master of disguise - I never saw or noticed him once during the entire race, and he still beat out Javier in the final sprint.

Hi Kissena,
My name is Josh, and excited to be a new Kissena member this year. Up until recently I had a crap job that prevented me from riding early mornings and weekends. But I have a better job now, and I hope this will mean that I'll be joining you in PP for the morning rides and for the longer weekend trips.
A little bit about me: I've ridden bikes and followed racing ever since I was a kid, but this is my first time joining a club. I ride a Specialized Allez Comp 2002 special edition, as well as a Biemmezeta fixed city bike. When I'm not on a bike I'm an architect and a soon-to-be husband, which also makes me a part-time wedding planner.
I also have a few questions, which maybe some of you can answer: 1) where do I meet the group in PP for the morning rides? 2) am I going to get my ass kicked? 3) is it too late in the season to think about racing?
Thanks guys and I look forward to meeting everyone soon!
#1: On the Prospect Park Loop just inside grand army plaza (grassy triangle) - for weekend rides Brooklyn folks usually meet at the Tilary Street entrance to Brooklyn Bridge
Welcome Josh. You are clearly a rookie because you actually think there is such a thing as "a part time" wedding planner. Haha.
As far as "too late to race." Some coaches won't "let you" race without months of good foundation building. But we are adultish, and do this sport because it is fun. As long as you have reasonable expectations about jumping into your first races in the meat of the summer when guys are fit and fast, and you can still have fun then no problem!
I've been racing a long time (one of the club mentors), starting with collegiate cat Ds, and I can tell you at every level from absolute beginners to "elite amateur" (no snickering all you guys who kicked my ass on today's group ride), this sport is HARD. But fun. The PP training rides will be great for you. Join in and get ready for fun (and some pain).
We generally meet at 6:00am Tues-Thur (and often Friday for recovery pace). Like Mike said, the location is Grand Army Plaza (GAP) just inside the park. You may have already done this but check out the PP Weekday Morning Training thread for an idea of what our weeks look like.
Oh, and we roll out at 6:05. If you miss us just roll slowly the opposite direction and we'll pick you up on our way around.
Thanks for the warm welcome! I'll check out the PP Weekday Morning Training thread for the full skinny. Maybe this is answered there, but when does a morning ride generally wrap up?
Marc, if I were to have asked my previous question #2 about the wedding, the answer would be a solid yes. Jules thanks for the congrats.
People ride for different amounts of time. The official workout is generally something that can be done within an hour and then people often ride for a while after. Or, if you're like me, you get into the park earlier and get some miles in before 6:00 and then jet out at 7:00 to get to work, kids, etc.... Cheers, Jim
31aug2011 hi ALL, harry here, joined Kissena in may after 2nd spring race in ppk &having bumped into marc bertucco & stephan en route from/to the orchards...grand ambassadors to the sport and the club. have ridden quite a bit in last year&1/2, mostly alone in the carolinas &a number of aggressive metric/imperial centuries...so looking forward to tour of catskills to see how i fit-in &work with the group. just a neophyte so still learning in cat5 events...it's a blast, but, still keep getting my butt kicked(or dropped) in last 300meters of park events. feel free to include me in long weekday rides up the hudsonR valley, as am jones-ing for any elevation training and country roads available. happy to be on board see @races! -h
My name's Derek. I just moved into town a few months ago and joined the team last week. I'm from Portland Oregon and more recently London. I'm looking forward to making some friends, racing lots of cross, and supporting my teammates. I'm cat 4 but I may move up to B's depending on how things go this fall. It looks like my first race this season will be the Hillbilly Hustle.
I'm doing cross-focused workouts in Central Park after work about 4 nights a week -- I will call a few out and see if anyone wants to meet up.
Here's me after breaking in my kit tonight with a somewhat damp workout in central park.
Hey everybody, my name is Gilbert, and I live in Flatbush right next to the park. Outside of a duathlon at Prospect Park and cycling in the NYC Triathlon as a part of a relay team, I had never really raced in a pack. I got bit by the bug racing track bikes last fall. I finished my first full season at Kissena Velodrome and now I'm a cat 4. I also ride BMX. Is there a track out here somewhere? Looking forward to more road and track races next season, and learning 180 barspins.
