JP is generally a very friendly guy despite his scary avatar. But he turns the screws and rides hard. All the time. He's a cat 2 and placing consistently in PRO123 races. So yeah. Be aware.

Today I sussed out JP's special Battenkill-readiness route to Nyack - the trail off 9W (after the state line descent, just after the first traffic light) was mostly cleared except for a couple dismounts. Still so many huge downed trees up in that area from Sandy. The rail trail from Piermont to Nyack was totally clear, but the dirt trail along Nyack Beach (to Haverstraw) was still pretty wrecked so I had to turn back.
All in all, lots of fun and a necessary lesson - I forget that riding on dirt, even well-packed dirt, is a lot more tiring on a road bike. The ride was 45 miles but felt like 60.
I'm gonna be doing that ride a bunch more times this month in prep for Battenkill - I'll cross-post to the B'kill thread when I'm planning on it. It might just get folded in to the regular weekend group ride, with the dirt detours for those who want to join.

with the trail from Nyack Beach to Haverstraw, aka the fourth pic, Sandy raised the Hudson 10 feet above normal. In some respects, it's amazing anything was left.
BTW, was the weird picnic table still in the middle of the trail?

totally. And I forgot to mention the third pic. When I got to the entrance of Nyack Beach SP, I decided instead of dropping down to the parking lot to follow the climb up to the "plateau"; on the way up I saw a trail off to the right and I followed it. Turned out to be a switchbacking hiking/MTB-type trail and quite le sketch on a road bike. It did eventually bring me down to the beach trail, though. RR had some icy patches on it - passable, but use caution if you're going out there today or tomorrow.

If anyone is curious; doing 65 miles of pure "back and forth" is almost an exact replica of Battenkill in terms of elevation, without the dirt and tifosi...

I have off tomorrow. I want to get in a long ride.
Anyone want to join? It will be hard. Not like race up the climbs hard, but more like I will push tempo, tempo, and more tempo. This will not be a "no-drop" ride, but most fit folks will be able to sit on my wheel.
Thinking ~70 miles from brooklyn.
Let me know. Departure time negotiable.

i have friday off of work for the easter holiday (thank you, jesus) and so am planning a ride to piermont, maybe nyack. weather looks as though it'll be lovely. probably the usual 8am BB start.

Please use the Manhattan Bridge as an alternate.
Cyclists heading from Brooklyn to Manhattan should be okay up to 10:45 a.m. if they arrive at the bridge and the procession has not arrived yet. Cyclists heading from Manhattan to Brooklyn, however, should not enter the bike path unless they are sure they can reach the Brooklyn side stairs by 10:45.

I'm thinking River Road to Alpine and up to Piermont. From there depending on how the legs are doing either Ash/Tweed/Nike or continuing to Nyack and points north. Looking to do some climbing and mix it up a bit.

Jesus H Christ. I have the worst luck. Like Charlie Brown with the personal mini rain cloud following him around overhead.
So, almost 60 degrees and I decide to head over the GW. Got rained on. Damn, thought it would stay sunny. Not bad though and it was a nice ride.
Except.....
There was fucking gigantic fat fuck Super Fred (unlike me, regular average Fred) who came barreling around one of the supports on the bridge, cutting the corners. BLAMMO. Brifter collision. After some cursing (I know, Stearns. This goes without saying; it's Owens), I get to take some satisfaction in the fact my indestructible 7800 Dura Ace broke some stuff off of his Sram whatever. Thank you, fishing-lure Gods.
Also, since I'm ranting: The coffee at that little roadside place after the stateline downhill on 9W is turribul. Rant over! Now I'm happy.
