Interesting that EF has Colin Strickland in its promotion, even though hes a rapha sponsored athlete

I think what it gets down to for Strickland is that he makes more than the WorldTour minimum ($34k), and that the bulk of that money comes from RedBull. Oh, and JV has a reputation for not keeping promises.Mark Taylor said:Interesting that EF has Colin Strickland in its promotion, even though hes a rapha sponsored athlete

I heard (via the slow ride podcast) that this was the case. I do have a bit of sympathy with JV in this instance though, as he has to give up a spot for Paris-Roubaix for someone who may/may not be able to make an impact...plus he wanted to wear his Redbull helmet.mugwump said:I think what it gets down to for Strickland is that he makes more than the WorldTour minimum ($34k), and that the bulk of that money comes from RedBull. "The company aims to highlight unique characters across different cycling disciplines – not only the EF riders but other individuals such as Dirty Kanza winner Colin Strickland and criterium specialist Justin Williams."Mark Taylor said:i read the article , my question is why is he featured in the EF rider trailer

THis is on Strickland's Instagram page
Riding in circles. Fueled by: @redbull | @meteorXallied Racing | Vibe by: The Meteor | Speed by: Allied Cycleworks| Wearing fine textiles by: Rapha www.redbull.com/us-en/theredbulletin/bike-racer-colin-strickland-makes-his-o
Funny thing, I thought he and Meteor had a longstanding relationship with Giordana. Maybe there is money behind the Rapha sponsorship.

i find this list of sponsors while long, actually quite impressive. His idea of just asking people to join him is pretty spectacular and maybe has the potential to be way bigger than anyone can imagine

This seems a lot more fun than being on a pro team getting yelled at by a DS over an earpiece for 10 mos in Europe and sticking needles between your toes and other...crevices.

@eloy we still need a beer sponsor 🍻

Sixpoint has a legit space in industry city now. We should try and get BigALICe brewing to sponsor us. Or some other local, up and coming brewery. One with a space that we can all Meetup at for post-ride liquid snacks (or pre-race for some) @eloy

Fwiw I bought and drank so much sixpoint for the 2 years.

Maybe. But I don't know. I'd think the most of the equipment sponsors are product only. If that's the case, or even if they're throwing him some cash, he still needs to get serious viewership to make his living off of youtube.eloy said:i find this list of sponsors while long, actually quite impressive. Unless there's something else he's doing on top of those sponsors--paid appearances?

He rides Allied bicycles, which is owned by the same company that owns Rapha (WalMart scions). I should have remembered this from the get-go. It's a little cross-marketing for Rapha, and as they put money into EF, the video is their production, and the video was shot near the Allied/Walmart hq of Bentonville, another reason, as maybe the scions also paid them to make the video there--the scions, among their projects, have a non-profit promoting cycling in Arkansas in general and northwest Arkansas in particular (this is why the CX worlds are going there).
Which gets to another thing--JV could well have been lying about wanting to sign strickland, a lie that works for mutual benefit.

^seriously the amount of high quality media CX and women's racing manages to produce is insane value for the money people spend. I don't understand how this arbitrage still exists.
Feb 11, 2020 at 01:25 AM
Curious. What makes it "insane value" to you? Is it that you're impressed with the production or are the viewership stats impressive?Jules said:^seriously the amount of high quality media CX and women's racing manages to produce is insane value for the money people spend. I'm thinking about two things in particular. First, the massive amount of access to the athletes these video producers have, and second the degree of relatability to the athletes. There really isn't a modern sporting equivalent that I can think of. Usually it's NBA stars and their mansions or Sagan's sportscar kind of events.mugwump said:Curious. ^this is golden marketing that is being left on the cutting room floor, or more accurately not targeted beyond cycling enthusiasts.
Contrast it to something like decathlon, a sport people remember about perhaps every four years, but those athletes make it to wheaties boxes and prime time tv at much higher cost.

@Jules
This question has been dogging me since I got into cycling. While I'm still trying to find the elusive magic turn/frame that will convince the public of what we know, I've resolved to accept this kind of cyclophilia as our own beautiful derangement. Maybe, someday...

interesting take JP
cycling, specially competitive cycling — whether it be road, mtb, cross, or even gravel — is its own language.
Guessing than like any language, it is hard to learn and be fluent.
The Keogh videos are extraordinary for many reasons, but we get them, they speak our language. I wonder if non cyclists, beyond other endurance sports, could get the same value (I think they could, I hope they would, but maybe i’m wrong)

I honesty believe it's a matter of taking the athlete and using them to sell stuff. Not taking a video made for cycling fans and trying to repurpose it. Tell me Kate Courtney wouldn't have this country eating out of her hand?
