Very interesting. I hadn't even thought about how a crosswind favors rim brakes.

Whilst in the pain cave at Providence (the best pain cave on Earth as far as I know), a few of the announcer's words somehow found a way to cut through the hypoxic misery and reach my brain: "The cyclocross racer lives and dies by two things: entrance speed into a turn, and exit speed from a turn." It was seriously some of the most concise and profound cycling wisdom I've ever heard. This is where I believe hydraulic disc brakes' power and precision will win out.

I wish the guy had gone into greater detail.  For example, most fancy carbon wheels come in 16 or 18 spokes in front.  rotor disc brake wheels never come with fewer than 24 spokes in front, with at least the left side cross-two.  In earlier wind tunnel testing, there was a marked difference between 18 spokes and 24 spokes. Not exactly surprising as there's 25% more spokes on the disc wheel.  But he says nothing about the wheels.  It could have been a 24-spoke front on the rim disc bike, but knowing that would be important for us to be able to differentiate.

The rotor disc brakes don't have more power.  It's not the point of them. And many canti' styles can be set up to have way more power than you need.  I had no trouble locking up my shorty 6-equipped 'cross bike with one finger with road tires on the road.

As for entry and exit speed, are you suggesting that the best 'crossers in the world are sacrificing entry and exit speed?  #doubtingNysis.  


At NBX, day 2, the wind was fierce. And me with my fancy 32 spoke piece of crap wheel...

So I'm running on the beach, bike shouldered, and I swear, the rear wheel got shoved sideways so hard that I thought some dude had run into me. There was no one anywhere close to me. It was freaky.

At CX camp, we spent a lot of time discussing and working on diff't lines that would lead us to the fastest exit speed. Related, I'm still kicking myself over not working on a pretty innocuous looking turn that I never got quite right at NBX. If I had gotten to the course earlier (Brandon!), I would have been able to hit that section a few more times.
I can't get my shitty CX bike to stop. I'm always living in terror trying to do the calculus before each hot CX turn. My only workable theory is that the cable routing on my bike is simply flawed. This is an impossibility on hydraulic lines. I've ridden a few canti CX bikes. Exactly one (Eric Ragot's Van Dessel FTB) braked very well. In my experience, these bikes are outliers. Most CX bikes brake pretty shittily. However, I've never ridden a disc CX bike whose braking didn't astound me. Granted, my sample space is exactly 4 :(.
I think you're hitting on the real problem.  Poorly designed and/or set-up brakes.  those link wires made things worse ATMO.

Often it helps to shorten the transverse cable or get a wider cable yoke for lifting more cable more quickly.  Or both.  With both, you can "stiffen" the feel and move the pads to the rim faster.  How short you make the transverse cable can also reduce modulation. 

Regardless, if you have a "link wire" for the transverse cable and yoke, I'd ditch it.  The action never feels good with them. 

Below is a Thorne straddle carrier.  It has a pinch bolt and a wide shelf for grabbing.  I don't like the philips head pinch bolt for the transverse cable, but the wide-ish yoke I like.  Jagwire makes a decent one.  As does SRAM,which is probably the same one.

^ No. The photo on the wall is the problem, it's creating a field of cheeseytrons which is exerting sideways force on the rollers.
It's not the rollers.  He is wearing a Gran Fondo jersey.  It exerts a downward force that pulls him to the ground.  On the road it would have the effect of slowing him while he wobbles back and forth trying to stay upright.  But indoors it causes him to fall over.

Not for someone who has been riding as you.

His first mistake was not using the doorway.  It's much easier to put the rollers in a doorway and lean on the sides for starting. You bump off the frame to keep yourself going.

Yes, yes a thousand times yes. Start off riding in the doorway. The bumping off the frame also doubles as a useful lesson in reacting to getting bumped during pack riding/racing. Not the aggro park racing antics, but the incidental contact that happens among reasonable racers.
I still ride in a doorway...cause why not
I can't get on rollers without some kind of assistance.  Generally have to use a chair or a wall.
