Never seen a video of this race before. 

Watching him thread the Koppenberg past all the falling and walking riders is amazing.  More so when you see the massive gears everyone is riding.

I remember pictures of this race from Winning magazine.  I believe there was one of him racing solo where he was riding through an entirely submerged road, while smiling/grimacing and reaching for his downtube shifter.

Never understood the swim cap over the hairnet.  Maybe it was one of those thermal cycling caps with the brim cut off.

I'm sure the former pros don't miss it either.  Didn't Hinault suffer from chronic knee pain from pushing those massive gears up alpine climbs?

There's a story in The Bad Guys Won (fun book about the 86 Mets) about Mookie Wilson.  Early in his career when he was a budding all star, he was instructed to practice fielding fly balls and throwing it to home plate.  He was so innocent and dedicated to training he does this enthusiastically for hours in the rain and figuratively throws his arm off and destroys his shoulder.  Two surgeries later, he was never the same athlete again.

I guess I'm saying that I'm glad I'm not a pro-athlete!

If this is 1988, then I was probably at college and hadn't made the trip north to race, so I was probably making my way out to Chestnut Hill, PA for a training ride with the Pennsylvania Bicycle Club.  The group ride was something like 30-50 miles, and it took me at least 20 miles to get there, so I was usually knocking out centuries those Sundays.  Grew on me like a bad habit.  The final 10-15 miles home, along a busy, usually clogged road leaving Philadelphia were usually an exquisite fog of dead legs and bonk.

in the middle of the photo, you'll see two guys in white jerseys and helmets.  That's Charlie Issendorf and Rich Hincapie rocking the Somec/KCC elite team kit.  There's a guy on their right in a blue and yellow jersey, that's the Sleepy Hollow Bicycle Club and Joon Min, the brother of Zwift's founder.  To his right is a big guy with blue sleeve and red-and-white Giro.  That's Ed Beamon, who used to direct Navigators and now runs team TIBCO.  

You'll see a few orange jerseys with white side panels.  Like one on the left side of the road by the rocks.  Pretty sure that was the Kissena jersey of the year.

I see an issue with some of your presentation. Your quote says that 1919 was the slowest year, but the data shows that 1920 had the slowest average winning speed of 21kph, compared to 1919 at 23kph. 

Have you looked at any correlation between average winning speed and ratio of finishers to starters? I would bet there are confounding factors like weather that contribute to how many starters actually finish that you might not have access to in your dataset.   

Good eye @Dan! That is funny, the conventional wisdom is that 1919 is the slowest year and I had not checked against my own dataset. 

Re: other correlations - not yet, but I think you're on to something. There's a lot more I'd like to do with the data and add to the analysis. Perhaps in v2.0...

It appears to be the work of four freelance photographers.  Kristof Ramon, Cor Vos, and the Grubers.  Their work also appears in Peloton and a few other places.  I assume all four have yearly contracts, and this year they're skipping Velonews, where all have had work appear in the past.  Cyclingnews has never spent much on pictures.
