The 20th Annual Tuesday Night Bicyle Races Series at Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field starts this Tuesday May 1 2012.

Category 3-4 = 7:02PM
(then it starts 20 min and 30 min earlier in the final August dates)

I won't make the first two Tuesdays (semester ending) but then it's on.

This is my main NYC racing focus for the season.

The lure of FBF is strong to me. I'm going to try to hold back a bit and wait on racing, or only race 1 or 2 weekdays a month. Last year I drove myself into the ground and got crazy sick trying to race that series.

Thinking about taking a crack at the 3/4 overall. Could also support anyone game for 123's, but seems like much harder yards if Mengoni and Champ-sys in attendance.

It'd be great to still have you John - you're over 39, right?

after watching you race in the 123's this past saturday, i have to say, you belong there.

you got 8th in a 123 field sprint with ZERO leadout after working your ass off for 5 laps squashing moves for michael.

i know i'm racing a 3/4 road race this saturday, but YOU do not belong in a 3/4 floyd race . . . you're a contenda in "the show"!

plus, there are no cat 3 upgrade points in 3/4 races (unless the field is huge)

Charlie may cancel it or the field will be very small, IMHO

Charlie only cancels if there is flooding at FBF. If it rains sporatically or has some time to burn off, Charlie will run the races anyway, but look for a message from Charlie between 4:30 and 5pm on the day of saying whether it is on or not.

yeah. I've been in races with like 8 other guys before. And I've ended races with dirt/mud freckles all over. And things can change really fast in FBF so even if it rains hard in the morning but the sun comes out strong in the afternoon, race will still happen.

Thanks for the props William! I have to say I was super impressed by you covering pretty much the whole race Saturday, you've got quite the engine.
I was Cat 5 this time last year, so with all due respect I think I'll have a go at taking the series (I think Perlberg did last year no?). Upgrading to Cat 2 is not a goal—Cat 3/Masters is pleeenty challenging for me right now. 123's Thursday maybe.

who thinks this race is going to happen today? I have to know its eater this race, or I have to go to River road and do hill repeats.

I give John permission to race the 35+ 3/4 race. Keep in mind, the Tuesday series is looooonng, it is very hard to win. And us youngsters can't help out.

You can race anything at Floyd, the question is can you afford to destroy your carbon tubulars in a Tuesday training race? if the answer is yes, then go have fun. If the answer is no, I would recommend racing on tubeless or clinchers, and save the tubulars for pavement that is more...how can I say this...maintained.

Nosson - I have a feeling people overestimate Floyd's wheel-wrecking ability. You'll see several people racing Zipps at Floyd just fine. It isn't a death sentence for your wheels. It's the tires you gotta worry about.

The likelihood you'll flat at Floyd is surprisingly high (though I have never flatted there in over 10 races). I just always see people flatting there. The ironic advantage with a tubular is that when you do flat, you can ride the flat tire to the finish line without worrying about damaging the rim. Of course with a clincher, the flat can be remedied easily IF you decide to race with CO2, levers and a tube/patch kit.

Personally, I plan to race my 808 tubulars at Floyd. I bought them specifically for Floyd races since I figured they would be useful for holding high speeds in breakaways. At Floyd I like to be off the front and try to get in/make moves. In terms of really rough road, only the last stretch on the short course is really bad. Virtually everything else is fine.

Your tire pressure depends on the width of the tire and your weight. I run my 22 mm tubulars at 130 psi given my weight of 220 lbs, just to give you an idea.

You look about 180 lbs, so you may want to pump to 120 psi with a 22 mm tubular. 22/23 guidelines the same; 19 mm more pressure, 25 mm less pressure.

Nosson went down hard tonight. He was laying at the crash spot for a good half hour. 2 ambulances came through. I didn't see it, but we rolled by it 4 or 5 times. When our race ended, I went by and he seemed conscious and was moving his hands and head. I asked the cops how he was doing and they said that he was in a lot of pain. Nobody knew, but they suspected a broken collar bone and perhaps a separated shoulder. Charlie managed the situation well and told me that he had already been in touch with Nosson's brother.

Despite the crash, it was great to see Charlie at it again. I really love the Tuesday night series. And no, we didn't lap John's field. We didn't because we got neutralized as we were about to lap them on their bell lap, so we got a to take a break for nearly an entire lap before spinning it up again for our very own bell lap. I wasn't up there, but I think Rene was in the top 20.

Jesus! Hope Nosson is doing OK, I left early after flatting second lap, missed the whole drama.

Re the wheel choice. As long as you have a map of all the wheel killing potholes on the long course, you're fine. I destroyed a set of Kysriums last year after I took a wider line at the top section of the Tuesday night course. Very hard to see some craters, let alone avoid them wheel to wheel in the bunch. There's no way I would ride a set of Fabergé Zips there unless I had gone around the course with a can of pink spray paint and marked all the holes. Btw, there seems to be a whole bunch of smashed clam shells scattered around the course—suggest riding something puncture resistant.

@ Vlad. Touché... I hope you had a fun time hanging on the back of the 123's tonight, must be a great view back there!
