123 - not much to report for me. was happy there wasn't much wind! first FBF race in years, literally...fun to be back there. got to ride a strange new route from queens rather than the familiar Flatbush Deathquest. turns out it only takes me about 40 minutes to get there from work, so really i have no excuse.
tonight was my first race since May or so, i think, and i have not been doing a structured training plan. it showed. looking at the power curve in strava, my numbers are way down. i thought i took an epic pull at one point but apparently my kickr workouts over the winter were more epic! regardless, i had a great night on my new bike and we even got a group photo with the sponsor-correct bike from Mr Chan!
i think scott savory won and i remember being next to him on the straight after turn 2, so i think my failure was in maintaining position after that point. i was on the outside in turn 3 and 4, lost a lot of places, couldn't make them up. however, the gopro was on! so expect a video at some point as well as new ideas from me about how i erred.
maybe it's because i haven't been racing much, but i think i ride a lot less aggressively than i used to in terms of maintaining position. pack-finish races come down to constantly maintaining the right position. i need to learn how to do that. oh and up my ftp...
Floyd is it's own beast. Park races don't really help you prep for Floyd...but Floyd helps you prep for park races. When I was a young man, I'd race Floyd on Tuesdays and a CRCA or Prospect race on the weekends...that made me fit. Floyd never felt correct until you race there 3 or 4 weeks straight. That bike is the cats boobs by the way
Not too windy, which might have made it a bit easier than I remember.
There were two weird things going on. First, because the overall is so close, the yellow jersey (NYCC) and green jersey (Stalin of Jordan) were constantly trailing each other, neither willing to commit to counter-attacking, nor did either's teammates seem to have any interest in helping them--with the exception of one guy on Jordan, who would occasionally ride tempo to keep things together. And nobody seemed to have any interest in capitalizing on their narrow-minded two-up battle.
Second, it didn't seem as if anyone had an interest in beating Scott Savory. The guy had only one teammate. Granted the teammate was Allen Rego, but still, when someone has a sprint like that, I would have expected other teams to throw down in the final laps to try to blow apart the race and put Savory on the wrong side of a split.
I did the opposite of Brendan. He sat tight most of the race. I went out on the attack several times. I was able to ride pretty hard, but lacked the explosion necessary to really get away. I thought I'd be able to surge at the end, but I lost that when, just after turn three, the guy in front of me decided it was time to drop anchor. Was too far back anyways, but the slow down and acceleration made anything at the end impossible.
I didn't have the legs last night. It should have been easy because of light winds but it wasn't for me. It was a big field too and warmer than I expected.
The goal for me was to keep everyone together for Jeff. We were neutralized on the second lap and I heard someone from Mineola bicycle club saying he was going to attack when the van pulls away so when he went to the front, I tagged along. When the race started again he followed another who jumped and I went with him. We had a gap but we neither had the firepower nor the cohesion to stay away. Two corners later here comes the field.
The rest of the race for me was mainly getting to the front when I saw people were away or when I saw Greg or Chaim sliding backwards in the field. In the last lap, I was towards the back when Jeff passed me. I swung out and told him come with me as I rode to the front. Job done, I slowly faded and finished off the back.
Does anybody know if this Sunday graveyard race series is happening? I would guess not as I can't find it on bikereg but the 2017 race dates are listed. I contacted the email listed on the website...
ah. i was going to self-cancel anyway. i've raced like 3x this year, this would be the second on the brand new bike, and rainy day sketchiness is not a good way to reacquaint myself with racing
tonight = first floyd race of year for me and it was the version of floyd i hope for, when i go to race (aside from dodgy rider antics) Hard and windy, meaning breaks were going for most of the race. Jeff ended up finishing in one of them and I sprinted for 5th or 6th in whatever was left of the field, but 5-8 guys(?) were up the road in breaks.
Remembering exactly what happened is a bit of a fog of war experience but I think we did a solid job between the two of us. Jeff got in early break, I rode an easy tempo on the front and jumped on anything that looked like it might get across. Eventually I bridged across with a few guys to Jeff's group, which was splintered by then and a couple guys were up the road (I think?) It was a big break at that point and after pulling through and falling back, somebody took a monster pull, three boys pulled the plug directly in front of me and Jeff, opening up a very large gap that I couldn't close and eventually I ended up in no man's land until the field caught me. Then I patrolled the front, waiting for next one, which Jeff eventually jumped on. So with him away, I went back to recover for a lap, then started covering moves again.
With 1 to go, I attacked into the headwind on the backside and gapped the field but my companion could not pull through so we got caught. I tried again then prepared for sprint, which ended up being easier than I thought, which must have been due to general field exhaustion. Wish I would have tried a little harder.
Overall, I was truly suprised at how many gaps I had to close over the course of the race, in breaks and in the field. I started yelling at people by the last few laps. But overall, I much prefer a splintered, blustery race of attrition than a fast and consistent one, so who am I to complain.
@PatrickGrehan On the calendar, can the Happy + Healthy race series be updated? It's got an odd alternating schedule. The dates have been updated on their website.
Charlie could use two volunteers for registration tonight. Same deal with free races applies: use the credit for any of his races in FBF or prospect park. He didn’t specify time but i suspect he’d love it for people to show 30 min before the Cat 5 race if possible
