is there any way to watch in English without VPN?  login with cable subscription or something?  it's ridiculous how difficult broadcasters make it to access content

I watched via NBC sports with cable login. No commentary however, which was part refreshing and part frustrating until I found a start list with numbers on my phone. You could also hear Frieze part of the time depending on how close the current camera was to a speaker.

I too watched via NBCsports streaming. Heard commentary switch off between Fries and a commentator in German (I think). Was pretty clear sounding to me - not sure why Jim heard something different.

I didn't get up early enough for U23 race but the Elite women's race was awesome. Came down to a neck and neck sprint to the finish in the last lap. Wow.

Probably my bad. Watched the women's race on the trainer while wearing headphones. I watched the men's race from the comfort of my own bed and, sad to say, the audio was as poor as Jim described. 

Having said that, the men's World's race was pretty cool. The course conditions had changed dramatically from the day before. I was rooting for Van der Haar to get on the podium. He almost did. Hyde was respectably in the top 20. Makes it so much more impressive how fast the leaders were. 

I would have liked to see how things worked out between MVdP and WVA if there hadn't been a flat. Would have been a nail biter.

you know that the nbc feeds have just ambient sound? what you are hearing is the announcers live at the venue, for the fans that are there live.

which, btw, i love watching races like that, just the fan noise. no commentator is the hotness.

to be fair, the uci feed had Simon Burney as a
guest both days, he is totally mellow,  but also the top most cyclocross expert in the english speaking world.

I elected to watch the men's race on the UCI feed. Advantages to both that and ambient sound.

Yep, would have loved to see the prolonged battle between VDP and VA but such is cx racing. 

Back to the races, I basically enjoyed all of them, with the elite men still awesome, but perhaps being the lesser of them all.

Both the Elite Women and U23 Women were insane.

It was honestly beautiful to see Sanne Cant and Ellen Noble basically and simply believe. Ellen maybe rode that off camber better than anyone all weekend, and Cant obviously wins the race there. Worst, Vos, and Nash rode so well too. 

The junior race was absolutely nuts, those kids were riding basically in ice, skidding all over the place. After Hartfod, I could so relate. Hotness on ice.

@MaxThorn let me know before you sign up, a supposed work deadline on August 11th has me now gravitating towards August 4th. These sell out quickly, so we prob should not wait too long.

Grad school is almost done/Freedom is on the horizon. Since I've probably missed my shot to do anything other than a few late-season road races, I'm looking forward to the cross season and thinking about what I would need to join the training sessions in July, starting with a cross bike. Any thoughts/rec's for getting started without breaking the bank?

It'll depend on your budget, obviously, a used bike is always a good start -- but keep in mind that a well used CX bike goes through a lot of abuse.
