For the life of me I can't remember what his answer was, but when I asked Garrigan a month or so back, which tire I should buy for my only set (just ordered) of tubulars (look out, punks, I'm all going to be fierce and what not this year), he said, [?????] WITHOUT hesitation. Fandangos or Griffendors or I don't know. I'm going to ask Myerson at the clinic this weekend, then hit up Garrigan for a repeat of his answer.

It seems to me that at a minimum, the Chicane would be a great file-tread replacement tire. Speedy on the flats, but enough bit on the twisty turnies to keep you cornering like a "not cat 5."

Someone on this team has them, I thought it was Rick actually, and mentioned that there's a bit of a learning curve in that you have to lean your bike a bit more to get to the biting tread.

This has always been a good race to Kissena. Lots of podium shots. Interesting course for sure, and the longest rideable sand section you will likely hit all season (unless you go up to Saratoga Springs). Always look forward to this one.

You could also look to the Clement pdx as an all rounder.

Wanted to jump in on this. A cx pro told me for clinchers run clement pdx, mxp or las (all 33mm) depending on conditions. You can check out the patterns online. One is for mud, one for all around and one's a file tread. Run 30 psi for 99% of conditions. You can find these on amazon and cyclocross.com pretty cheap, under $40/apiece.

Years ago I raced Michelin mud's (green ones) in almost every race and had good results. This was way back in the day and I ran about 50psi because I didn't know better but performed well anyway. This year I'm running whatever came on my cannondale until the tread wears out, prob at 30psi for every race.

For tubulars Dugast are of course the best but cost a ton of $$.

Not speaking from experience, but from what I've gathered Grifos are the good all arounder tire by challenge. I have a used set than came on the wheels I bought. People who know much more than me about this sort of thing gave me 3-4 races on them before the side walls go. I imagine ill replace them with new Grifos or What ever the comparable Clement is.

I've got all 3 of the Clements. I like them all. I have only used the LAS as a rear tire. I discovered I'm not a confident enough bike handler to have a file on the front. I also ran these in the mid 20s for air pressure with latex tubes. I think the wide rims let me get away with the lower pressure. The PDX is a mud tire but does work well as a good all arounder with a lot of cornering grip. .Although it felt really slow in the tall, not yet matted down grass of the first race of the day at Harriman/Westwood Velo

Let's start figuring out rides/ flights Marc. Master's 30-34 Nats is my goal this CX season.

For folks who are still putting their cross bikes together and are looking to run clinchers this would be a pretty decent setup wheels, tires and tubes at $320 total cost

Coolio. If I go, it will be with family too, but we'll definitely stay in touch throughout the season. Related, I haven't noticed your name on any of the early season race start lists. The MAC series and New Jersey races typically do "order of registration" staging. Wouldn't want you to get buried in the back if you normally would have a shot at placing.

Marc, speaking of registration races, does anyone know when the next deadline/race opening is for either of those series?

As far as I can tell I think it's some kind of French term for heckling.  That or a biscuit of some sort...

Marc- If you are going to have one set of tubulars, it would have to be Grifos. There is a new crazy formula for determining max tire width in UCI. Some contrived formula which allows heavier riders to use wider tires legally. Result is somewhat harsh on women and smaller guys. 33 is plenty wide. The change to tubulars from clinchers is way more important than tire width.

I actually had really good experience using 30mm Grifos in past. They cut right through the slop down to harder surface when wet and Grifos roll just fine on dry courses. Fangos are great for grass and sand. Make sure you do not but 34's. The actual tread is the same as 32  and simply glued to higher volume casing, putting knobs too far inboard to provide any cornering grip.

BTW, you can find pairs of Grifos on Ebay for $100-120.

In all seriousness, I could have sworn that was an April Fool's joke about the tire width restrictions for cross for heavier riders. Worth a Google? It's 33 all around or so I thought. Let the debates begin!

Ahhh, it's officially cross season. Jim Feehan is back!!! Fascinating info about the 34s and poor knob placement. Also coming through with the obscure/bizarre UCI rule report! Love the info. I'm going to start saying, instead of "I'm going to google that," "I'm going to Kissena that."
