Brendan - you're probably fine on your road bike. I was in Prospect and didn't have any issues aside from the puddles. West side might be a different story though.

Indeed GWB is closed. 3/28/15 I did not check this morning, but rather have experienced it first hand. Beautifully brisk morning for a ride nonetheless.

I am writing to ask you to notify your members about a large religious procession (between 1,000 and 2,000 people) that will be using the Brooklyn Bridge walkway this Friday morning (4/3/15) from about 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be several thousand people walking from Brooklyn to Manhattan, and it will be impossible to even walk a bike through.

Please use the Manhattan Bridge as an alternate.

Cyclists heading from Brooklyn to Manhattan should be okay up to 10:45 a.m. if they arrive at the bridge and the procession has not arrived yet. Cyclists heading from Manhattan to Brooklyn, however, should not enter the bike path unless they are sure they can reach the Brooklyn side stairs by 10:45.

Please notify your members and forward this notice to other cycling organizations and message boards you may know of. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Bump!
Police have been out in force on Crystie just north of Canal. So if that's part of your commute, keep an eye out. Not clear what they're stopping cyclists for but it's been consistent for a week or so.

What happened to 9W this past month?

The west side of the section from the Palisades Parkway overpass by Stateline south to the scout camp has been denuded and now has a steel guardrail. They didn't widen the road, they narrowed the shoulder and put diagonal striping down the middle.

Besides uglifying the area, we have less space for riding.

I was out in the middle of the day today in Prospect Park. There was a DOT crew filling potholes. They apparently were not actually there to fill *all* of the potholes, or the most dangerous ones, but some of the smaller ones between 3rd street and 9th street are filled.

Nothing so far is done about the gaping hellmaws at the top of the hill, or the fact that the entire right lane is crap right by the water fountain across from the tennis house.

As of the last Road Sharing meeting the DOT has no plans to do anything other than "patch" the Prospect Loop.

In the past we've carped bombed 311 to get patches but if anyone has clout with that department please holler.

This is the "patchiest" patching job i've ever seen. Skipping the big issues and band-aids over the little crap.

Rode over to Jersey today. Busier roads in NYC are better than side streets, but you probably already knew that.

Both the GWB approach on the NY side from Haven and the Jersey side along the rock wall are a bit messy, with some small icy patches, but the bridge overall is clear.

And Jersey is much better than the city. As usual, River road looks clear from the bridge, but I'm sure the chained-off section from Englewood Cliffs to the Alpine boat basin hasn't been plowed.

Should get better by the weekend.

Rolled over to Jersey to do my sweet spot intervals today. Started the first at the beginning of River Road. Twelve minutes in to the 15-minute effort, after doing a great job of threading the needle between fallen branches, I'm stopped by a tree that has fallen across the road.

So I ride back and up the illegal hill to start another at the foot of 9W going north. There, just five minutes in, the road is closed and I have to turn left. So I figure I can loop around and get on 9W at East Clinton. So I take the loop and when I get to East Clinton, it turns out 9W is closed that way, too. So I turn left and figure I'll go to Woodland, where our group ride turns onto E Clinton, and go backwards on the route I just took. Only I can't make the turn there, either, as cars coming up E Clinton are given the road by cones and cops.

Dejected, I end the interval.

And then, noodling home, another road was closed due to fallen trees.

I assume all this will be cleared up by tomorrow.

JP - John, Sam, and I did RR this past Saturday. It was in very rough shape then too. Tons of branches and grapefruit sized rocks everywhere.

utility work on the west drive in CP between 72nd traverse and TotG. 4 trenches, 1-2 feet wide and ~1 feet deep each, spanning the entire width of the road. Before 6am this morning they were hard to spot, especially because they were barely marked (single small orange cone on the side of the road). If you don't bunny hop them you will have a bad day. I saw an asphalt crew starting to mobilize towards the end of my ride so hopefully they'll be patched up soon.

Cops are back out near the manhattan side of manhattan bridge looking for cyclists.
