I can't decide what to think about the blacked out bikes. On the one hand, they look stealth and threatening. Very batmobile/seal team six chopper. On the other hand, every other bike I see is matte black. Diminished badassery through overexposure.

My theory has been that they made the CAAD 10s a little less dope so that people would look at the Super Sixes.
But while the super sixes look better, IMO, they're not exactly white hot either.
Who knows. Maybe they don't do focus groups. Or maybe they do and people have horrible taste.

Ultimately it should be a utilitarian decision. That's why so many of us ride CAAD 10s instead of Pinarellos. It's a bike racer's bike. Huge bang for the buck.
When I opted for my supersix red racing last year, I didn't love the look. Still don't. But I knew I was gonna buy a bike in the next few years, and I knew I was really gonna get at it last year. So I figured if I'm gonna get a bike, I ought to have it for this season of heavy use, because who knows how many years I'll have to train and race the way I did last year. And while I didn't love the paint scheme, what I was getting for the price seemed about as good as it gets.
So, yeah, they're ugly. But, it's meant to be ridden fast. Not admired.
When I stop racing I'll have a custom waterford made that I love to look at, and I'll keep it for the rest of my life.

I agree they're great racing bikes for they money but I don't like prescribing what kind of decision people should or shouldn't make.
We care tones about aesthetics - my beautiful bike/kit/gloves etc gets me out in cold dark, rainy mornings and motivates me.
I think you can get a sweet custom paint job on one of those bikes and *still* be way ahead money wise.
Or (hope springs eternal) it's a case of the bikes looking much better in person than online.

@Ryan, I agree on function over form, but as a mediocre cat4 at best a CAAD10 (or any other race bike) will not be the difference between 30th place and the podium for me. So the NEED factor really isn't there since I'm having fun racing my old bike anyway. Couple that with budgeting - a new race bike would be the last bike I buy for a very, very long time - and my conclusion is to have my cake and eat it too.

@Yang: I have a different view about the effect of a new bike on a mediocre cat4 (sic) rider. I bought deep dish carbon tubulars earlier this year, and although they were about the cheapest pair of carbon wheels one can find, one could argue that they are overkill for an over-the-hill cat 3 who doesn't train enough. My teenage son challenged me on this point (god bless him) and I justified the purchase by saying that these amazing new wheels represented a commitment to myself to train harder and race more aggressively in order to take maximum advantage of the advanced technology. And it sort of worked. I trained like I never have before and had a good season. My winnings did not provide much return on my investment. But I love riding those wheels.
PS. I'm planning to buy a CAAD 10 this year to go with the wheels. I'm afraid it will have to be stealth black. Black does go with everything, even Kissena colors.

I'm with @Stokes on this one. It's hard to put a price on an extra 50 or 100 hours of training per year but if your new bling gets you out the door even an extra hour a week it's probably going show itself in it's results - especially for people training less than 10 hours a week.

yang, exercise caution if only for the following reasons: (1) what if road bikes have disc brakes next season and you're stuck with this non-disc-brake frame? (2) zomg what if you don't like the colorrrrrrrrrrrrr?!?!?!
like you, i think that my bicycle is not the cause of races lost. i lose when my opponents are in better shape or ride the course with more skill. in the infallible gospel of armstrong: "it's not about the bike." it's about the EPO. in the immortal words of mark clifford, we're amateurs.
be wary of trying to justify a bicycle purchase with the word "need." we need food. racing bicycles are a luxury good.
that said, i love my caad10. +1 to jules and dstokes: a new bike made me ride more. the shifts are just so lovely and crisp!

-Don't buy Cannondales because they are on offer, buy the bike you want. If that happens to be a Cannondale, then you're in the right club I guess.
Here's a tale of sponsorship woe. One of my peeps on the Long Island group ride was telling me today that Bicycle Planet will cease to exist as of the end of this season. The shop (Bicycle Planet is a cycle shop BTW) was getting pissed that many (perhaps 5-10) of the team were riding Chinarellos that they bough off the internet. Despite the shop offering $350 of FREE kit per year and a 'cost+10%' discount on many items, as well as administration and as well as the shop paying the yearly CRCA membership for each rider.
Bicycle Planet decided that it was fucking rude, and has pulled the plug.
