after riding this morning i noticed extra noise coming from my rear hub. there is the normal clicking noise from the ratchet when the wheel spins freely, however now there is a new extra click between every normal click. The extra clicks are not quite as loud, but still very noticeable. Could it be the bearings?

If you can pull the cassette and put your hand on the body and then slowly spin it, more might be revealed.

I'm reluctant to guess as I wonder if the spring mechanisms have gotten louder, perhaps drier.

Fully aware this post might not be very helpful, but JP is probably right, specially if that is the wheel that you raced on the crazy Saturday rain -- you might need a bit of lube on the pawls.

what type of wheel is it?  when was the wheel last serviced?  that's some ear you've got. no way would i hear one extra click in between the constant clicks that come from my rear hub.

i would just go ahead and service the hub.  it probably needs it.  did the noise begin after a normal ride or after hitting a massive pothole?

it was very noticeable hearing twice as many click-clacks from the hub than i am used to. it's a set of FSA sl-k wheels. Third season on the set and i've never serviced them so i probably ought to do that. it started today after a ride this morning. no big potholes. saturday i rode in the heavy rain, not sure if that was a factor or not.

yeah i guess double the clacks would sound like a totally different hub.  each one of those clicks (clacks!) should be a spring-loaded pawl snapping into position.  so if one of them is clicking more frequently, probably not a good sign.  freehub is not slipping though?  you're not noticing that it takes longer to engage when you pedal?  does it still rotate freely and without issue?  when i had a freehub go sideways, it wouldn't freewheel....had to pedal whenever in motion, like a fixie

i'd grab two allen keys and take it apart.  probably just need to clean and regrease.  things get strange and noisy when there's not enough grease!

each freehub is slightly different but in general stick an allen key in each end, turn.  then it all comes off (taking the cassette off first will make it easier to see what you're doing and may be required to get some parts off of some freehub bodies)

thankfully the wheel seems to be behaving normally. i'll service it anyways. thanks for the advice

     Before suggesting folks just muddle through with a few Allen keys, before suggesting a video, I strongly suggest doing some real research.

     In my experience, they're more than just slightly different.  And I wouldn't do what you're suggesting, lest springs, levers, ball bearings drop onto a hard floor and roll away.

     Park Tool has an impressive how-to section.  Start there.  If that isn't definitive enough, track down the wheel manufacturer's website, and see if they have service instructions.  Many do.

Bummer, but on the positive side it seems that Giant upgraded their alloy frame with in-house hydraulic brakes.

Supacaz too much?

I'll just wrap my fork with it so's when I hit trees I'll bounce off 

I like the "classic" thin feel and perforated look of the 2mm Fizik tape, but Supacaz is superior in pretty much every way.  I have the blue starfade (which is unfortunately really a Team Sky blue than a neon blue) and wish the fade part was more of an ombre look.  As-is, it's basically two tone tape with the triangles printed onto the black part.

Currently on planet bike gel wraps...it's a nice cork...cork for the $$$ can't be beat
