Congratulations Gwynna!

(Time to sign up for some races with larger fields now, eh?)

:)

If anybody is still mountain biking this time of year, Darkness at 909, which is a Halloween themed individual night MTB time trial, which I've hawked on the forum in in years past, approaches.  Our own Mattie D. took home an excellent trophy from there last year.  (Or was it the year before Mattie?)  You do need a decent light set up for this race.

Don't let the goofy costumes fool you.  There's some real racing that goes on.

I'll be racing again this year, looking to take a repeat win, this time in cat 2. Fun course, roadie friendly, unlike Nats. I'll be dressed up as Batman.

Oh man, might dust off my mtb for this. Mattie, would you have room for a ride up?
I'll probably be leaving straight from the shop in Piermont, I live in the burbs!
Lands on the same day as donut derby...but they're hours apart, so feasible to do both?

Mattie/Neil - I'm sure it's been discussed before but what's the ideal lumens would you need for night riding? I have a 300 lumen bar light, and a 350 lumen helmet light. Sufficient?

And this course, fast flowing? (Although anything that's not the Nats course is fast flowing to me).
@Mattie- or is it Battie(Man)?  I think you'll find the Cat 2 times more challenging--not that I don't think you'll sweep the field again, mind you.  Rumor has it that there may be some changes to the course this year by the way.

@Phillip-

You could probably squeak by with that little light but it certainly wouldnt be conducive to trying to do well on a course you don't have memorized.  You need to be able to see stuff pretty far out on front of you, especially on fast downhills.  You should look to have closer to 1500-2000 lumens. and as you can imagine, not all lumens are equal.  There are other considerations, like beam pattern and light frequency.  There are some good pieces on MTBR.com about lighting.   My personal preference is to have a pretty wide beam on my bars pointed at where the bike is headed and a little narrower beam on my helmet which will point where I look.  Also I always have one decent back-up light on me.  Even in short night races like this. crap seems to happen to lighting (e.g, batteries die, connections fray, lights get knocked off and lost in the woods).  (I've twice scrapped my chances of doing well at this race by riding other people out of the woods whose lights had died for one reason or another.)  Also have a light handy that you can use if if you have to fix a flat or do other repair work.

Again, it sounds lie there may be some changes this year, but the general terrain at 909 is not as fast smooth and flowing as say Morristown or Stewart, but it is presumably far less technical than what the Pennsylvania Nationals course sounded like.
My time last year would have won the cat 2 field also, muahaha.

I'd be comfy with 6-700 lumens on my head. Bar lights are secondary.
Has anyone been left behind in the woods because they got lost in the dark?

I'll be riding at Lewis Morris Park in Morristown NJ tomorrow mid morning.  Lewis Morris is just over an hour drive fro Brooklyn. My son has a soccer tournament about 15 minutes away, so I'll drop my wife, dog,  and him off there at around 9:00 and head off to ride for about 90 minutes,  If you haven't been there, Lewis Morris is a sort of Suburban Park that is super NON-technical, well marked and relatively small.  Rideable on a cross bike if that's your thing. The course has been part of the H2H series for the last 5 years or so.  I can take 1 rider and a bike if willing to abide lots of family soccer shenanigans and possible hold over 'til afternoon if the tournament goes well or I can meet you there.

@Gwynna-
Likewise. Were you able to find your way through the good stuff at Stewart without the course markers up?
I ended up having a great ride at Lewis Morris yesterday with my puppy tagging along.

For all you crossers who've been at it for at least 5 years, coincidentally the fields that my son's soccer tournament was at yesterday were built, in part, on top of the venue for the Central Park 'cross races that Marty's and Westwood sponsored in Morris Plains in 2010 and/or 2011.   When I got there I felt strong sense of having been there before... in a dream perhaps...and then it hit me.  If you haven't been there, it's a lovely suburban park with all of the amenities, in the middle of which sits an empty 19th century "lunatic asylum" known as "Greystone."
