Taconic 909 as I recall is good for hardtails and guys with weak Mtb skills such as myself. There is one descent to bomb, but it's not insanely rocky. And honestly, if you pre-road it a couple of times during a training ride, you'd probably be unpassable there too.

Thanks for the info, Marc. $70-80 + gas for both places, probably because it is so close to the date. If I can split that with someone, that would make it a lot less painful. I hate having to beg every weekend, but it just happens that these two without public transit options are ones the woman I'm dating can't get me to. *sigh*

Keep checking...those rates can fluctuate even close to the date. I often reserve, so I know I have a car, then will check a couple of days before, just to see if the rates went down. Budget has a "pay now" option that typically cuts 10% off the bill.

Taconic 909 is somewhere in between the extremes of Lewis Morris and Jungle Habitat technicality. I happen to think it's a sweet spot of the technical mix.

Phillip - As for remaining H2H races, the Tymor course in mid-September is a bit tougher than Lewis Morris -- definitely more up and down to it. It's also bit more technical, but still on the lower end of the spectrum.

Also, if there's anything coming up at Stewart this season, that's low technical and very roll-ee. A real favorite for me. Lastly, Cathedral Pines in Long Island--where there's genereally a late season race ...is not particularly technical.

Thanks Neil. Cathedral Pines, 6 hour race? I wouldn't mind being part of a team to tackle this 6 hour race. Pricey though. I'm going to aim for Taconic 909 then.

P.S.-Stewart is an excellent race for a singlespeed MTB in case anyone has one which they're dying to go out and race. There's a separate SS class.

I'm sure you can toss stuff - it's just like a water bottle isn't it? I saw
them tossing bottles in the world cup. And the rule quoted does not say
that parts and tools cannot be discarded.

MTB if full of examples, all the way to world cup and world championships, of riders disqualified from grabbing a tube or a tool from a teammate or fellow racer in a cross country race.

--- to be clear: I'm not suggesting you should not have thrown the tube. But if an official had wanted to, they would have been right to sanction.

Grabbing - yes, that seems very clear in the rule - no acquiring anything
or getting help.

But is it clear that you can't ditch stuff? What about a water bottle?

Not trying to be argumentative, just really want to know the rules...

The rule can't be any clearer: if you grab anything that wasn't on you at the start, you can be disqualified. Including water bottles.

i.e. if you find it on the route, and grab it and repair a flat, you can be disqualified.

Unfortunately, also plenty of examples, including cyclo-cross, of racers disqualified or penalized because of a beer handout.

And, still, I would probably still throw the tube, and grab the beer --- If I'm stranded in a longish XC course, I certainly would appreciate the help.

With most officials most of the time, common sense prevails. If its super hot, they wont mind about water bottles... if you got help and finish 20th they wont care. If you get 2nd, well, good luck.

Gwynna, what is the venue for the Hurley Burly? (And I clearly should have checked the rules for this gear swapping PRIOR to the last race. Whoops. Had road rules on the brain. No places stolen from other racers, so no harm done, at least.)

Im down to go, would prefer to go the night before and with more people or else i might not do it. I could fit a total of 4 people and bicycles on my car.

On the outside assistance rule....In a 2003 race at Big Bear, California XC race the following happened and the offending multi-tool drop was played over and over again by OLN in slow motion like it was the Zapruder film.

"Roland [Green] was in first, cleat came loose, [teammate] Ryder Hesjedal throws him a multi-tool as he rides by. there's a rule in NORBA that says any tool used in a race must be carried by the racer using it from the beginning of the race. he didn't get DQed because of another rule that said all contests to results must be brought to the officials within 15 minutes of the posting of the results. since no one knew about the cheating until watching the footage on OLN (except Roland and ryder, of course) no one could protest within 15 minutes."

The above description stolen from a post on mtbr.com because I'm too lazy to write it out myself. Still trying to find that OLN clip.

Good luck with the second half of that sentence. West Hurley is very close to Woodstock. It being the 4th of July weekend, lodging might be pretty hard to come by.

You might get lucky if you look at places in Kingston.
