Oh my god, that picture is like the saddest advertisement for chain keepers.

Seriously. Makes a belly full of anger look pretty weak in comparison.

When racing on the road, I start with two basic goals:

1. Do not crash.
2. Finish in the lead group or better.

Sometimes, in helping a teammate, I'll forgo goal 2

Both are easier said than done, sure. But all other goals come after those two can be achieved.

JT and I have a bit of history, let's just say we don't agree on much... however, this article, dated 2016 but actually decades old, stayed with me, and has helped me achieve goal 1: Do not crash.
The first is to convince yourself of something that isn’t completely true — that you are one hundred percent responsible for staying upright
Loads of great insights and tips here:

I've got some quibbles but generally this is good advice. The big one that is missing is this:

Sometimes you'll be in the pack and find a GREAT spot. In the middle of the pack, out of the wind and not too far back. You may find yourself, with a beautiful spot...

I'm certain everyone on this forum has been on the subway when it's crowded and a beautiful, EMTPY car appears on a crowded train. I'm sure most of you have stepped foot in this magic train car only to discover quickly why it is empty.

That spot? Same thing.

This article is about running, and very long, but absolutely one of the best race reports I have ever read:

THIS LION HEART WON'T QUIT

by Lauren Fleshman
https://www.oiselle.com/blog/lion-heart-wont-quit
For so much of my career I have operated at a level where I pretty much knew what I was capable of before stepping on the line. I could guess my 5k fitness within a few seconds. And here I was blowing myself away. I realized how freeing if felt to NOT know what I was capable of. To race straight into the unknown. My plan had been to run with Lyndy if I caught her, with a fantasy of running side by side until my foot complained, but now that I was in her slipstream, I wanted to know. I wanted to see what was inside me today.
So much f*cking yeah.

Mechanic says wider range of gears needed, but Pedersen still on 1x. I'm trying not to be mean, but please, they make it too easy.

Take a look at the Pedersen bike photo, and you too will notice the rather MASSIVE chain catcher.

I can't imagine a cable-actuated front derailleur could weigh any more.

This interview with Quintana has been making the rounds, because of his statement (posted below) (it's in spanish, but you could use Google translate)

"Este año el pelotón ha aumentado mucho más su velocidad, bien sea por el tema de desarrollos o porque todo el mundo está muy atento a cualquier cosa que sirva para mejorar: las aerodinámicas, los pesos... Se calcula absolutamente todo y eso hace que la velocidad sea más alta"

"This year the peloton has raised their speed so much more, could be because of gearing, or because everyone is paying tons of attention to anything that can improve performance: aerodynamics, weights... Everything is measured and calculated, and that makes the speed much higher"

I've heard this song before. The ending has a trombone solo.

Cycling Tours, Once for the Hard-Core, Now Offer E-bikes

More riders are using battery-powered bikes on group cycling tours, creating their own set of tensions and hand-wringing over the artificial advantage.

^because Tuscany isn't crowded enough.
Wow.   Now the drastically out of shape will be able to imagine what it's like to ride up the mountains of italy while coasting.
....i wonder how long until peloton has an app?

The funniest thing about the email updates is it doesn't show the link in my email, so i figured @Jules was just telling us about some #olmanproblemz

Kieran!! Awesome.

Lyft pulls thousands of e-bikes from New York, Washington D.C. and San Francisco streets after some riders experience 'stronger than expected braking'

https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-owned-citi-bike-pulling-electric-bikes-off-streets-after-brake-complaints-2019-4

<rant>

Got an email about this over the weekend. The "stronger than expected braking" is a weird excuse, and to me reads: "Riders don't know how to properly brake at this speed, so they crash"

I've ridden the ebike citibikes a couple of times, and, I confess: I loved riding them. But it took me about one pedal stroke to know that these are way too powerful, and dramatically beyond most non experienced riders skillsets. They did not feel "pedal assist" but much more "pedal activated" where the pedal is almost a button that turns the engine on. They supposedly have a speed limit of 20 mph, which also felt super fun, specially on up inclines, but way beyond most people abilities to ride these bikes. Speed limit should be much closer to 10 or 12 mph.

Basically, pedal assist should allow these bikes to be ridden with much less effort, but not allow any more speed than if you were riding the non e-bike version.

Well said, Eloy.

When I post about look sharp, I often post photos of Rebecca Twigg, an American cycling superstar. To learn that she is homeless, is honestly heartbreaking.

What an Olympic medalist, homeless in Seattle, wants you to know

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/homeless/olympic-medal-winning-cyclist-rebecca-twigg-is-homeless-in-seattle/

So much content. The Twigg article is heartbreaking for so many reasons; not the least of which is the tiptoeing around obv. questions like "why again did her mom kick her out of her HOME at 15?"

Chapeau to Kieran - who has a pic of him in his custom KCC/Irish National Champs jersey?
In other news, SRAM acquires PowerTap. I am not completely surprised because as awesome as PowerTap was, it had lost incredible market share.

From Cyclingtips:

SRAM has acquired the PowerTap brand of power meters from Saris, the companies announced late last week. SRAM will incorporate PowerTap offerings – chainrings, pedals, and hubs – into its Quarq line.

Saris retains its CycleOps brand of trainers, as well as its bike rack products, and will focus more on those areas in the future as SRAM’s Quarq team takes over sales and support of the PowerTap brand.

This post about Sea Otter and specifically Richard Fries by Ayesha McGowan exploded earlier today.

Ending in this tweet by Fries:

Arguably everyone on these threads is a bit entitled, but Fries entitlement is specially striking and disappointing. This inability to listen and learn, goes a long way to explain him, and perhaps also the decline of the KMC cross fest in recent years.
Oh boy
Wow. Sea Otter. Fries. Massive bummer.

(On the subjects of accents, I have a story)

Our kids did an improv class last summer and the "teacher" was big into accents. I'm ashamed to say it took me this many years to realize that if the content is funny without the accent, then you don't need the accent. If it's funny because of the accent then I'm laughing at someone's otherness, not what they are doing.

Doh.

Bicycling's Bill Strickland chimes in, with his own thread.

Understanding what was wrong in the exchange between McGowan and Fries, truly matters. Fries tacit expectations were so brutally out of line.
