I think this is a really good analysis of the structural problems facing pro cycling.

I think so. I mean, if the cop says "boo" but the NJDOT says "Bah." We of course do boo. But when asked, we say bah. I feel a bit like a sheep here...

Nothing defuses a tense standoff on the side of the road with a folded DOT printout. What could possiy go wrong?

I did get pulled over with Jules and Canadian Mike. I wrote about it somewhere on here. While that guy didn't give us the chance, there are plenty of police who, after their harangue, ask why or some such. Then you could whip out the regulations and cite chapter and verse.
I'd be willing to try it.

Seriously. Why is there always "no criminality" when an auto hits a pedestrian/cyclist even if they've done something illegal but this guy is getting a felony?

I think it has to do with press coverage and the public's demand for revenge.
Look at what's happening to the car driver in Williamsburg. OK, 60 mph is a problem, but there seem to also be problems with the livery driver.

I think stokes is right about the public.
Los Angeles cyclists made a big stink when an ER doc slammed on his brakes in front of a group of cyclists on a back road. THey did it because they were afraid the DA wouldn't prosecute. It became a news story and the DA went after the guy.
