It was disturbing/bizarre the number of firefighters and police who would routinely say "it's their own fault" or "that's what you get for being on the road" and "roads are for cars" when we would respond to a cyclist hit by auto call. When I mentioned that I rode, after making sure I wasn't "ghey", they'd ask why I would do something so dangerous. All the stats in the world wouldn't sway them. The only thing that would make them reconsider was when I pointed out how many of their hobbies were equally or more dangerous, and if you love something you can't live in a neurotic bubble. They still think we're stupid, which is why using their idols to spread the message is pretty great.

A firefighter/medic friend of mine from a former bike racing team asked me, when I was in nursing school, "Why don't you go to paramedic school?" Among other reasons, I'm pretty sure I would have had trouble fitting in.
As a side note, I love seeing the EMT/medics hanging out by their buses smoking cigarettes.
Also, FWIW, having spent a few days tearing around in an open-wheeled, formula 1-style race car, I can confirm that driving one of those things is indeed EXTREMELY physical and the notion that race car drivers do need to do things like mountain biking etc., to keep in shape strikes me as very true.

Don't matter. He's not going to race much anyways. I figure he'll sit out the Giro due to a crash at Romandie or some other leadup race. I doubt it. He wants dough, but teams don't have the budget. Like I said smart. I think there's good evidence for older endurance athletes, the "won't race that much" model is the proven path to one or two outstanding performances in 2014. I predict a top 5 for Horner at one of the Grand Tours. And if Lampre was smart, they did their calculations and figured whatever base salary they signed him for, is worth a 5th place at the Vuelta. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not suggesting that he's trying to sit it out. I'm stipulating that he'll be unable to race. He's been pretty crashtastic and injury prone over the past several years. Basically ever since he got his weight under 140.
And, assuming he's got the big incentives, that means he's going to be working really hard to get the fitness--so it's probably all or nothing. So, he's got reason to train hard, race hard, and that can lead to problems.
He also has greater incentive to dope.
