Group Ride (Sat & Sun)

Anyone interested in taking over leadership of the "Piermont Paceline" ride on Sunday? Stokes? Malcolmson? Ragot? Myles? Bueller? Bueller?
@Marc I think two group rides is plenty.  If people really want to ride Piermont & back they can join me for the Memorial ride and we'll turn back when we hit donutland.

I'm going to head to Prospect around 10:30 this morning and try to beat the rain.
SMH-ing.  It's coming DOWN out there; sorry to say I don't feel like washing my bike today.  I'll be inside, watching season 2 of Battlestar Galactica.  I can't get enough of those Canadian accents.

I see your Battlestar and raise you an encore of Spaceballs .

Euris' memorial ride is Sunday; leaves strictly at 9am. I'm going to back out of my River abroad B ride to attend.
So is the plan to still meet at 8am BB to head up to GWB, or is earlier better ~7:45/30 @Jules
100% in for B ride tomorrow. I'll be at BB at 8am. Can't wait.

Looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow and looking forward to leading the ride to Saddle River NJ and back. A couple of last minute notes:
  1. For those wary of the total mileage, you might consider taking the A train to 175th street and riding over the bridge from there to subtract 15 miles from your day. Similarly, you can ride the train back after the ride.
  2. Roads may still be wet/slickery on Sunday So maybe bring a fender, and make sure that you have a couple of inner tubes in case you flat. Wouldn't be a bad time to put on some new tires in case you were waiting for a special occasion.
  3. General rule of thumb says you should be eating/drinking some kind of carb/sugars every hour of riding. Too easy to go for a nice 3 hour ride, without eating anything and letting the bonk monster knock you out suddenly. This happened to me while riding with JP last week. I'll be reminding myself and everyone on the ride to nibble on something every hour.
  4. I just weighed myself post holiday gorging, cannot look at myself in the mirror without gagging a little, have ridden exactly once in the last month since my last cx race. It's going to be a slow, but fun ride. We all have to start somewhere. I'm starting on Sunday, how about you?
  5. Please ride with me, bringing any/all questions you might have.
  6. While not a "clinic" per se, I will be taking advantage of certain hills, descents, corners, and flats to review some basic pack riding skills.
  7. Stop lights, corners. There's definitely more through town riding than the usual Piermont/Nyack ride. I don't blow through too many lights. For one, I'm kind of a lame rule follower, but more importantly, it's too hard to keep the group together if the front of the pack goes through a stale green or yellow traffic signal.
@Marc - looking forward to it. See you tomorrow
Im in for the B ride... I'll be there at BB 8am - to - GWB 9am.

Looking forward to disrupt this unshakable schedule of EATING, WORKING, EATING, DRINKING, EATING, UGH!!!
Jules,

I'll join you for the memorial ride. See you at 9 at Strictly's. Just got X-box. Trainer rides just improved 1000% : )
Argh, change of plans... I won't be on the B ride tomorrow.

Thanks Mark; it'll be good to see you.  If you're feeling "displaced" from my original ride, please don't.  Come out and show some goodwill to our CRCA brethren; it's a small world and both clubs care about the same things.  The goodwill will go a long way.

Safe rides, everyone.
Jules-- and anyone else doing the memorial ride leaving from BK-- see you at 7:30 am BB.

There is something not right with my rear derailleur and I had to turn around in the park; major fail. Going to take my commuter down to Ft. Tilden for a mellow ride. Have great rides everyone.
Five Kissenas made an appearance today to show their respects; me, Kayt, Jessica, Dave Y and Mark Inaba.  It was a nice ride; maybe 300 riders total; the "usual suspects" from CRCA (foundation, fgx, siggis, axis, etc) and at least fifty freds.

There was the obligatory guy-in-full-aero-kit (helmet, tt wheels, etc) as well as his close friend the guy-in-bare-legs-with-radio-blaring... in spite of it all the ride was safe and everyone stayed upright and civil.

Overall it was a reasonably calm ride out to Matties; we stopped to let the herd move on and get some coffee, etc before heading home.  Ran into Neil who poached Kayt & Jessica for some Strava-bombing on the local hills while Mark rode farther and further with Dennis aka Angry Santa.  Yang & I headed back with Patrick Burns from RBNY (Patrick was one of 2 RBNY's to get collarboned at this year's Harlem Crit.  He also caught 6 broken ribs and a punctured lung from the deal; it was good to see him on two wheels again.)

The sentiment everyone seemed to share (his teammates included) was that he was as nice off the bike as he was not-nice in a race - but that above all he was just a kid, and everyone was touched to have so many people representing.

Yang made me Pray for Deth on the west side coming home; I had to resort to the old "hey did I ever tell you about the time..." story ruse to get him to ease off... :)

Ha. Awesome to get some peeps out for a good cause. Nice weather for it too

I was too hot and too cold the entire time.  Couldn't figure it out.  Now that I'm home, fed and showered; it looks sunny out.

(Leave it to a pair of Canadians to get straight to the discussion of weather)
Knickers and a base layer done

JP, myself, Dale, Vlad, Aaron, Jeff C., and Brendan took a nice jaunt through roads unknown (to me at least).

As promised, the ride was steady, steady, steady, steady. No rest, and a pretty relentless driving of the pace mostly by JP and Dale.

I finished the day close to 90 miles. I'm spent. Time to watch some football and cyclocross.

@jules - So it was all a ruse! A cunning attempt to trick me!

A huge thank you to Marc for leading a fantastic ride. We wriggled through familiar neighborhoods in unfamiliar ways, had a great group that largely put up with my "where is the escalator?" climbing "skills", and overall just had a fantastic day on the bike.

As predicted several times, the sun came out in full awesome glory...about ten minutes after we crossed the GWB. *sigh* I hope the Brooklynites enjoyed a lovely ride home!
Huge thanks to you, Marc!  Not only was it a great ride you lead but thanks for taking the time on stop lights and stops to expend some tid bits of savvy insights. Very cool!
Gyynna, us brooklynites clocked in 90miles after all said and done. We scattered off coming home, I broke off from Erika at Canal as she took BB back -- which BTW, you were a beast on those hills today, Erika! Nicely done and it's only January!

thanks again everyone!
cheers!
Great ride and great leading, Marc.
I am totally spent. I came in just under you guys at 86 miles since I diverted from the group and took 59th bridge to upper Brooklyn.
Can't wait to get back out there and hope to see you guys soon.
JP's pace was too much for mere metals.  a spoke broke.

mr. perlberg performed a textbook "attack into the bottom of the climb," causing my legs to explode with misery.  that was the closest i've ever come to walking my bike.  might be time for a compact crank.  or maybe it's just time to get in shape for racing season.

glad i came out.  good to see everyone!
@Brendan

I know i told you this already, but for the masses I will post here.

The attack at the bottom of the hill move is called "the fat boy special" I'm pretty sure Jeff Owens invented it.

I have not perfected it. He usually manages to get a little gap before sitting up. I did no such thing.

Interesting - I was talking to Marc about the downhill-to-uphill transition. Being so hea...um, carrying so much momentum, I often end up cramped up on someone's wheel.
Gwynna, I think that's the kind of concern that will iron itself out as you get more experience. Just keep doing group rides.

Except for the fact I 99% of the time hold it and beat perlberg up a hill.  OOPS.
Thank you @Marc for leading an incredible ride yesterday, staying true to the advertised easy/conversation pace, and of course the great conversations! After getting back to Brooklyn (and after changing a flat that happened at the base of the Manhattan side of the BB — so close but so far!) I clocked in at 83.5 miles. My longest single ride to date. Woo!

Oh, and @Gwynna's coffee balls (energy truffles? protein pods?) were amazing. Thanks for the handup!
Great ride yesterday.  The energizer bunny gang did a very similar ride to the stylish gang.  The leash was let off exactly twice, once about halfway, once on the final rise, Speer avenue in Englewood--nothing like a 15% grade to cap a day.

Eating on winter rides can be tough. I was watching a couple of folks struggle getting food out of their pockets, while others had the operation dialed.  It is harder in the winter, no doubt.  But the pro move is to pull off a glove before reaching for food.  The steps are as follows.

1. Remove one glove.  Many choose to use their teeth to do this.  Another reason why dental health is important.

2. Stow glove.  Many choose to hold the glove in their teeth while rummaging in pockets.  others shove it into their jacket--an easy way do this by pushing it up the front from the waist hem.

3. Open wrapper.

4. Return glove to cover hand. While doing this, stick bar in mouth. Some can do this with their ungloved hand, some need a moment with the other hand.  This can be done while hands are resting on tops of bars.

5. Eat.

Try it on your rollers/trainer first.  Then move to doing it on solo rides.  Then on rides.
