Group Ride (Sat & Sun)

do all sunday ride meet at GWB at 9am?

@Chi, for the last few years, we've been trying to get Sunday group riders to unite and leave at 9am. There are always exceptions (I led a ride at 10:30 last Sunday because of childcare issues), but in general I (and maybe a few others) frown when folks try to start their SUNDAY rides at say, 8:45 or 9:25 or some odd-ball time claiming "family man" or "need to sleep in" excuses. Seriously, I'm not joking, there was one weekend a year or so back, where there were 3 or 4 "group rides" all leaving at different times but all within 35 minutes of each other.

Saturday rides/schedules are more free-for-all. Typically you'll have a more specific ride, like the hammer heads doing a climbing ride where they hit every climb--twice--and beat up on each other. Or me or JP leading a classic inland Jersey "wormhole" ride.

But the Sunday rides, it's nice to keep regular and steady leaving at 9am. Low road out to Piermont, head back on 9W work on smooth rotations and pacelines. Riders looking for slightly longer, hillier stuff, will continue North a bit take in some additional climbs, turn back on 9W around Rockland Lake, head up around the college, drop back down to 9W and focus on rotate smoothly home after State line climb --ish.

That said, weather permitting (won't do it in the rain), I'm planning on leading my FOURTH mentor-led slow group ride of the young season this Saturday. Check back here for more details if you are interested.
If Kissena has a weakness, it's our group rides.

Read the How To doc, don't blow red lights, stay 2x2 at the red light, last person in line is responsible for the person behind them, don't attack the hills, etc.

Like everything, the group ride takes practice.

"...ride 2x2, stay 2x2 when we stop, put the tough guys in the back instead of the front, the weak guys are moved up, and we go easy when it’s hard and hard when it’s easy."
according to the official schedule, MSR will end sometime between 10:50 and 11:30 (predictions below). It is 16 mi from GWB to Piermont. If we meet at 9am, we can compare race progress with the predictions and then decide a route to Piermont - either direct or indirect depending on circumstances.

For those Sunday Riders of Sunday 3/21/14,

Remember there is.....

Our Early Season Day at the Velodrome

Yeah, I know.  Your want to ride long because of MSR, because you've got B'kill, because you really need those miles.

Well, MSR will always be on, B'kill is two weeks away, and those miles, they'll be even better next week.

Here is your chance to work on all important pacelining, bridging, and lead out skills.  These will come in handy at approximately all mass-start races you do.

Oh yeah. Forgot about the velodrome. Can we set up a TV in the infield?
Yes

Hey @Marc, forecast looking iffy on rain/wind tomorrow, you still planning a ride?

Yeah, I/we don't need to be riding in the rain, especially at a slower pace. I'll post something more definitive later.

Hi Marc,

I'd like to ride tomorrow, let me know what you plans are, even if its a bit of a later start to avoid rain...

Julie

The rain will be minimal if it occurs at all, and would clear out by late morning. The weather service says very gusty winds in the afternoon though.
Hi All,

Sorry for the late post. Kept holding out to the last minute and had to arrange for a babysitter. I'm going to head out at 12noon. I realize it's much later than normal, so I understand if you can't make it for the slow group ride. Don't worry, I plan on doing at least 2 of these a month for the next few months. And that's in addition to the regular Sunday group ride...which is only a bit quicker than my rides.

I'm going to decide in the morning. Assuming meeting point is jersey side of GWB, but correct me if that's wrong.
Marc,
What is your planned route or intended ride time?
I'm going to decide in the morning. Assuming meeting point is jersey side of GWB, but correct me if that's wrong.
That is correct. NJ side of GWB

Given the late start to the ride--meeting at noon on the Jersey side of the GWB--I think a ride to Piermont-ish, to the top of Clausland Mountain and back would be in order. HOWEVER, we will take a different route than usual 9W to mix it up and hit some back roads. About 3 hours bridge to bridge.

I'm in for this plan. Anyone want to meet at BB and ride up?
Sounds good Marc, see you later!
Pat, I'll ride up with you.  See you at BB at 11.
Sounds fantastic Bruce, BB at 11 it is.
Ugh, gonna get windy, which I loathe. BUT, I will suck it up and join the crew. @Bruce van-Schalkwyk‌ and @Patrick Jones‌ I'll be at BB bridge too. No kit yet so look for me in purple.
I'll be at gwb around 12 noon on nj side. No kit either so look for the black windbreaker and orange helmet. Looking to do 2-3 hrs in nj and piermont area.
I'll be at the GWB at noon.
Sunday 3/23-
Leaving Jersey side of the GWB at 9AM, heading to Sparkill and back.  I have to be back in Ft. Lee by 11:00.  Post if you'd like to join so I know to look for you.  Pace will be relaxed but slightly neurotic.
Glorious weather for the slow group ride today. We had Patrick J, Joshua C, Julie J, Emily A, Craig London and myself. Bruce hit up River Road.

The rest of us dropped down through Fort Lee, took some back roads which soon got us on the traditional group ride route to Piermont. On the way, we detoured through Rockleigh crit course for a lap, then a rails-to-trails bike path, around Clausland Mtn, up a secret dead-end road near Josh's Aunt's house, back down around, to the top of Clausland Mtn, down to Piermont, stopped at Mattie's shop for refreshments, we ran into a woman named Ingrid wearing a new Kissena jacket who was riding with NYCC or somesuch. Hopefully she'll join us for some group rides later this year!

And then things got spooky. We're gathering to head back home via 9W, Patrick asks if we need some sun screen, we start riding, hit the dirt roads heading out of Piermont. I turn around and realize that Patrick has vanished! I rode back to the shop, in case he was still there. He wasn't. Patrick WHERE ARE YOU?

The rest of us regathered and after stateline, we pacelined home working on a smooth rotation. Not too shabby on the dipping and diving roads of 9W if I do say so myself. Good job everyone!

That sounds like a nice ride, Marc.  I rode up with Pat (good to see you again) and Emily (nice ta meecha).  Josh, good to see you, too.  Sorry we didn't have time to gab. And I split off from the group - to work through a few demons I've been sparring with this winter.  River Road has some dirt and sand at the beginning, and snow mounds along the side of the road, but was fine.  A few small rocks on Alpine.  I spotted Jeff C on the hill.  Repeats?  Then proceeded to tool around for 103 miles.  The growing potholes shook my new titanium bones but happy happy joy joy to be out in the sun again.
103 miles!!!! Wow.

So who lost him?
