Brisk but beautiful day for a ride. Saw Jeff Condon returning from an early ride and Ricky Cornetta heading out on a late ride, otherwise I was on my own. Maybe it was the Marathon, but there were fewer riders out than usual. Still got in a much needed long and relatively easy ride.

Central Park Ride!!

@AnthonyOtt and myself have been kicking around an idea for a month or so, and we plan on going forward with it. So here is the deal:

We both plan to do a single speed century ride in Central Park on Saturday December 14th. Obviously, anyone who wants to show up and ride with us from Kissena, or other walks of life, is welcome. You don’t have to do the whole thing, half a lap, one lap, five laps, etc. is fine. We will be stopping for food, beverages, and bathrooms as needed. The idea is to ride at a nice fun and social pace; we are not there to crush it.

Details:

Single Speed Steel is preferred but not obligatory. If you are running a single speed, we are looking at an approximate 58.7 gear inch. At least one brake is mandatory. We are not running fixed.

If it rains the ride will be re-scheduled for 2020 due to the holiday season. We will figure out a start time and start location in a few days and post.

P.S.: I won’t have a Kissena kit on since I don’t have any winter Kissena clothing yet (I’m waiting on the new clothing order to open.) And my orange helmet got trashed in my incident with the car :'( . Hope to see some of you there.

For those who don't understand gear inches, you're probably using something close to a 42x21, no?

I have a road bike set up with a fixed gear: 42x16. It's my commuter, so I pedal slowly in sneakers. I can easily swap in a set of clipless pedals.

BTW, metric or imperial century?

@mugwump. Working on getting the setup right on my Surly, It looks like if all goes well, I will be on a 44x20 and it won't be fixed. We figure the imperial century. If we are gonna go for it, go for it big time... lol... The attached photo is what I got free at the LBS. We are waiting on the 44t 144BCD.

I ended up using the calculator: https://allcitycycles.com/calc. Using 700x25c and 44x20 puts me at 58.12, close enough to @AnthonyOtt who said he's running 38x17 and on 23c that puts him at 58.79. It's not like we are racing so I don't think being exactly matched is going to make that big of a deal.

Central Park Ride Update!!

Due to the bad weather predicted for Saturday, we are re-scheduling the ride to Sunday. However, since @AnthonyOtt and I have things going on in the early afternoon, we might have to cut it down to a metric century (100Km/62miles) or more depending on the the distance riden by 11:30am. We plan to start at 5:30am at Tavern. Obviously, anyone who wants to show up and ride with us is welcome. You don't have to do the whole thing, half a lap, one lap, five laps, etc. is fine. Again this is not a suffer-fest, it's a fun social ride. Single Speed Steel is preferred but not obligatory. At least one brake is mandatory. If starting with us, bring lights.

We plan to schedule a proper 100 miler in the new year once the holiday season dies down.

I am thinking of heading to cunningham on the CX bike Sunday, would love it if you guys joined as single track with friends is the best fun.

But depending on where the dirt actually starts, maybe I can be swayed otherwise.

It takes a little while tbh, there’s some dirt bits just past the market and then once you get to piermont bike shop, it’s dirt for a significant portions (along a rail trail I think).

thanks, i know those trails, but yeah, that’s about 40km (80ish round trip) of asphalt before any dirt.

think I rather ride cunningham, any chance i can convince you guys to join? if anything would be fun to see kevin single tracking.

Ah think I’m gonna try and open the legs up a bit more with a longer ride.

I would also totally recommend that new park Mark posted about last week(Shirley Chisholm State Park). It was an 18min ride from Crown Heights, and I rode for about an hour and a half on all dirt roads and wasn’t bored.
