Group Ride (Sat & Sun)

I'll be at the GWB at 9.  Looking for some hard stuff, but can do whatever.

Love stories of meeting up with angry car drivers.  But you need a good story to impress us--After all, Keith had someone pull a gun on him.
Chills sound like heat stroke. Basically your body is in shock and trying to shut down to preserve essential components. So humid today that evaporative cooling doesn't work so well.
Maple, bacon, doughnuts were only slightly seconded by Jeff bunny hopping the Corvette on the way back to Piermont. It was the perfect storm we were descending the hill by the apts before the bridge from nyack. It's a blind corner and about 6 cyclists were single file in the opposite direction when a Corvette comes flying up the hill completely in the wrong lane. I muttered something like oh my god, and thought I was going to watch Jeff get hit. There wasn't much time to react I think the guy pulled back in to the lane about six inches and Jeff was pretty far to the right but they missed by a foot maybe?

We eventually turned around to see if we could find the group biking in the opposite direction to see if they get the plates of the car to file a complaint. We didn't find them so we turned around again and before we hit Piermont guess who we bump in to. Yep Mr. Corvette. We flag him down, and Jeff asks was that you on the up hill back there.

The first thing the guy says is "yes and I'm sorry" (that's the first time i've heard that). The second thing the guys says is he was trying to get to the bank before it closed and people were riding three abreast (not the first time i've almost been hit with someone being late) They actually have a intelligent and well mannered discussion and Jeff asks the driver to be more carful in the future.

Jeff and I had the discussion on the way home where you second guess your reaction and wonder if you made an impact upon the driver.I felt he handled it well, and hope maybe the driver will be a little more cautious around everyone in the future.

Jeff as for the chills. I say stop drinking water, turn your heater on and be sure to stay up late tonight. But what do I know I've only been watching re-runs of Dr. 90210 on TLC.
Joe was actually more shaken up than me. There was a split second there where I just said to myself "this is how I die."

I mean, it wasn't a stingray or something cool. It was like a 2005. Not the way you wanna go. I always imagined a Maybach or Bugati killing be. I'm probably only worth a Dodge Dart tho. Maybe a Kia.

But the bank WAS closing, so he made a good point.
Chills definitely a sign of heat stroke or heat exhaustion...both pretty serious. And actually, full blown heat stroke is an acute medical emergency that can lead to renal failure and all sorts of lovely things that you will never recover from fully. You have to drink, drink, drink. Wear sunscreen. Dump water on yourself. Stay cool.

As for myself today I got a major hall pass today and hit the open roads for about 7.5 hours of "easy" riding. "Easy" because 7.5 hours is never going to be easy, but I riffed off of a ride that Mattie showed me a while back and found some insane new climbs, including one up a road that was all consonants and made me think of hot Czech models as I was climbing through a new-ish housing development for well over 15 minutes. Seriously stiff. Serious climbing folks.

The original plan was not to stay out so long, but like my Czech girlfriend, I was seduced by new roads after new roads that all tilted up.

I got to thinking...I'm going to lead a "Not for Climbers" climbing ride sometime soon. This doesn't mean you waif-like models, or you 175+lb guys who love to complain about how heavy you are and then proceed to diesel us to death on climbs, rollers and flats  will be banned from the ride, but I really want to have a nice ride for us truly fat, slow, new, whatever, riders where we can go out and enjoy climbing without feeling bad because the club studs are having a picnic at the top of the climb just waiting for us.

Anyway, try and get a hall-pass for this one. It won't be 7.5 hours from bridge to bridge--that was largely because of me exploring a bit today. But it might be 6 hour. But I promise you new roads, new fun.
@Marc I'm on a strict beer and fudge diet this week in order to make the cutoff (sew-on?) for your ride

@ Jeff & Joe that seriously sucks, with some silver lining I guess. It is nver fun to be reminded how easy is its to get get killed or maimed while trying to have a nice social Sunday ride. Anybody who isn't a total sociopath would drive safer (at least for a little while) after an incident like that. +1 slightly safer corvette driver for a little while.
@Jeff, that's scary! Glad the driver got to the bank on time.

Today I decided to skip on the 9W-Saturday crew & do a 6am solo ride to Long Beach via Far Rockaway from PP. Lot's of sand & ocean on my nearly 70miler. Amazing views, highly recommend it for long-ish easy rides that breaks from the typical 9W scenery. I don't know about you guys, but I sometimes get bored of the same old roads along our routes to Nyack. Makes me want to try the Triangle Ride one of these weekends.
I'll be at the Sunday ride, 9am GWB!
Ros,

There's tons of various routes over the GWB.  If you find yourself doing something dull and repetitive, just ask JP, Marc, or Keith to give you a different path.  Nyack isn't necessarily where it's at, and there's also 10 different ways to get there if that 70 miler is all you're looking for.
@Jeff, you're right, I have not exhausted the many different routes over GWG. There are many I don't obviously know. But it was very nice having the Ocean breeze in my face and checking out all the beaches out there. You don't get that over GWG. I like discovering new routes. Get bored easily. Open to other route suggestions :)
I'm Dead bored with gwb, piermont, nyack and everything in between. Time to move to Calif. Who's with me?
I'm with you David.
But I'll see you all tomorrow morning along the west side bike path - as usual.
Well DBWPN (dudes bored with Piermont/Nyack), I've just about cracked the double secret code to a couple of JP's inland Jersey rides and would be willing to lead a group through some surprisingly entertaining roads. They can be easily done in the 3 hour range.

I'll have some bar ends for you Stokes
Well I'm still sick believe it or not so I'll probably do half an your of recovery riding on my trainer.
I look forward to the bar ends . . . And also to the group dynamic. It is the only thing that keeps me going. @ryan do you have west nile virus? Mono? This is too long to still be sick. Have you consulted a qrofressional?
No its just a nasty cold that keeps moving around. Started in my throat, moved to my chest, then my head. I'm functional but full of nasty shit. Might go to my doctor this week.
A cold takes 10-14 days to be symptom free and no longer shedding virus... Per mamma-doc

:(
Good ride today.  We started out on the traditional route and then turned inland to West Nyack and Haverstraw before heading back.

We got some chaos on our way back.  As we were rotating on 9W, we were passing lots of people and groups.  Some tried to hang on, some got in, some just got in the way.

Very good ride. Started out with 9 people. Jason turned back at Sparkhill and the remaining 8 followed JP over hill and dale. As JP said, we started out on the traditional route. Upon arriving at Sparkhill, I made the mistake of saying that the traditional route was over. JP then took flight. There was a reservoir, long stretches of Rt 23, and eventually the twisty little descent used by the Rocket Ride to get back onto 9W in New City. I sort of recognized the roads, but had to rely on JP to string them together. Vlad, David G., Adam F., Ben, Todd, Kim, JP and myself all hung together for the entire distance, moderating the pace as necessary. Even so, I had 77 mi at 18.1 mph and have been too knackered to use my fingers until just now. Of course, that means I can also now lift a glass of beer. Cheers to the group.

Im sorry I had to turn back - but I had a brunch date. 9W wheelsucking has definitely reached absurd levels, have these people no shame?

no answer necessary
i'm back from my bike trip (dutchess county, through the adirondacks, up to the 1000 islands region of the saint lawrence river).

what's up for this saturday and sunday?

(p.s. I found an awesome awesome totally grizzly new animal totem on an abandoned island in the St Lawrence . . . not sure what the competition/initiation will be, but it's going to be extremely bad-ass and will make your coworkers give you extra space when they pass in the halls)
Im considering another bear mountain ride this weekend
Bear is this weekend! That's whats up.

I'm leaving Monday but want to log some serious miles in before I take my Cervelo apart )':

9am gwb, back roads to Nyack, 9w up to Bear, 9w back down.

I'm in no shape to climb but want a nice, fast pace.

Victor is coming for the ride as well

Everyone's in? Great!

See you Saturday. (:

Myself and Wai Fong will probably be joining, I don't have the time for Bear, but I believe he has plans to go to Bear. I am planning to turn back at Nyack.
