Introduce Yourself, Post a Photo - Mugshots
Vlad?
I just wanted to quickly introduce myself. After 10 years in Manhattan, my wife and I moved to Park Slope last October. I have to say it was a great move and we love the area. I haven't been cycling that long (this is year 4 for me) and would definitely like to try competing in a road race or two. I got into cycling after being laid off in early-2009 and decided to get off my butt and try a triathlon. Since then, I haven't looked back and love both sports (tri and cycling). I participated in the NYCC SIG program last season and learned a great deal about pacelining and group riding skills. I've been riding in Prospect Park primarily on Tues/Thurs and starting to do longer rides on weekends across the GWB. I also signed up for the Gran Fondo (God help me) next week, so if anyone is looking for some help pulling, give me a shout.
Looking forward to meeting everyone,
Mike
Thierry.

I am a new member as well as a new resident. I just moved to the area from DC with my girlfriend and will be staying with her in ditmas park until I get settled, find my own place, find employment, etc... I am still relatively new to biking as I just started racing a year ago. I got into biking as a form of cross training for running. After numerous running related injuries, I decided to give racing on the bike a shot. The first year went well, minus one crash that took me out for a week. I am looking forward to my second year of racing and meeting all of the guys/girls over the summer.

Posted By: Allen CarrI just moved to the area from DC with my girlfriend and will be staying with her in ditmas park until I get settled, find my own place, find employment, etcWelcome Allen! Welcome to the city of premature moving in with girlfriends/boyfriends because it's too damn expensive/hard to find a place to live. (and you thought our slogan was "the big apple." hahaha...)
Give the forum a read; tons of good stuff!
Looks like it's my turn for the intro...I just joined the club and also moved to the city a few weeks ago from the UK. I used to race on the track pretty seriously (as a fat track sprinter) but took a few years break (getting a job, getting even fatter etc). I raced again last summer and really enjoyed it, but haven't done much since and am now scrambling to get fit again!
Look forward to meeting any other track sprinters, other trackies and everyone in the club soon!
Can anyone tell me any training sessions at Kissena coming up? Couldn't spot any threads in the Racing and Training section...I should really drag myself out on a group road ride soon too...
Plus if anyone knows of a safe, quiet (most important quality!) flat well paved 200m or so stretch of road in Manhattan or Brooklyn or anywhere not too far out (if such a thing exists) good for doing sprint drills on, I'd really appreciate it!
Cheers, Kieran
Prospect Park is the closest place to find a 200m stretch, there is a newly paved section that should work to your liking.
Floyd Bennett Field also has some nice open stretches, but the pavement isn't nearly as nice.
I'll try to get some of our track races in touch with you to schedule practices. There is a racing series Wednesday nights that I'm sure you could jump right in as training.
Welcome to the club!
Every Wed. night at 6:30pm there are races at the velodrome. Folks start arriving around 6 to checkin, warmup, etc .
<a target=_blank href="http://www.kissenavelodrome.info/http://www.kissenavelodrome.info/">http://www.kissenavelodrome.info/</a>
The velodrome is open at almost all times to the public for training (closed during races, closed for a couple of hours every few Sundays for clinics) - you can just show up and ride.
Its not the highest quality place in terms of ride quality (the pavement has some bumps, etc) - but it is awesome having a velodrome in our backyard.
The entrance to the velodrome is at Booth Memorial Avenue and Parsons Blvd, in Flushing NY.
There is also racing in Trexlertown PA (about 2 hours away) and in Wall NJ (about 1.5 hours, on an auto race track). I can post more info on those in a track thread (there are some threads on the forum already - search for "T-Town" or stuff from Mattie Davitt.
oohhh- important note - for the Wed night series , you HAVE to pre-register. There is a registration link on the velodrome site. The permit the rrace series has with Kissena Park\NYC Parks Dept does not allow for any day of reg (no exchange of $$).
If you do the single event reg via the register link - when you checkout there is an option to add other days (at $10 a day) - most folks register for 3 or 4 days at a time (you dont have to pick the day at checkout) - then use the credits by just checking in at the race each Wed night.
Will try and make a Wed night race (had spotted the bit about pre-reg, thanks) but it starts a little bit too early (unless you can rock up at 7pm and start the next race).
I didn't know about the track in Wall until reading about it on here last night! It looks great - would be definitely up for going to race there in the next few months if anyone was interested. Also interested in going to T-Town for some racing at some point but also to watch the pros in action in July - should be some fast guys there!
Yeah - you can come late for the Wed night races - you just risk missing a race (hopefully not 2) for your category. The races switch off for different categories (4/5, 3/4, masters, etc) . The schedule for the week is posted on the velodrome site.
There are normally 3 to 4 races per category a night...I rolled in late this week - I missed 1 and raced 2- there are only 3 on the schedule but if there is enough time I think he has run extra races some weeks
