Hi all,

Not to risk accusations of a British invasion, but...

Like Kieran I also moved to Brooklyn about a month ago from the UK. I have been a (relaively) regular road cyclist for a couple of years, and also do a bit of triathlon. Looking to have a few long(ish) rides on the weekends, and potentially join in at Prospect Park for some training laps. I currently live in Bed-Stuy so pretty close for me!

Cheers,

D
Welcome Dave!

Here is a tribute to the British Cycling Invasion... Brian Robinson at the 1961 Dauphine

Welcome David and Kieran,

Come on out for morning workouts! Good times and leg breaking workouts all before most folks get out of bed.

It also prepares you for the early start times of our races here in NYC.
Interesting reading, regarding our newer additions...

Kieran, do you ride with a power meter on your track bike?
10.5 flying 200? holy hell.

I don't know what your USAC track cat is, but tuesday nights at ttown are the 123 race nights, saturday morning for masters.
That's only 2/10th off the USAC Master's record.
Zounds.

Oh dear, you've out-ed me Jules! That was a few years ago...I've got a lot fatter and slower in the years since I'm afraid. I stopped riding really seriously about 9 months after that ride. But those were good times (in both senses of word)! I didn't ride with a power meter then (or now) but I imagine it peaked around 1900-2000+ for that ride (did a lab power test around this time at similar figures as I remember). Could barely manage 1500 at the mo I think (that's a guess. And I'd have to lie down for 30mins afterwards).

Thanks mattie - need to get my USAC license sorted and see what cat they put me in.
Josh - hope to see you at a Wed night meet soon, good news that you can skip a race or two..

And welcome David, funny that we should come over at the same time!

hello all!

i just joined recently and would like to say hey. i actually saw one of you (pink bar tape on a cannondale) this morning going up riverside. i tried staying on your wheel and managed for maybe half a block before being dropped.

on that note, where does one go for saturday/sunday rides for the velocity-challenged?

Welcome Andrew!

That was probably Jeff Owens you saw, on his (stylish) way to meet me for our first inaugural Doppleganger Death Valley Ride of Death.  We plan to hold one each year on the first 100+ degree day.

Not to worry; he dropped me like a bad habit as well.

Check the weekend ride thread for rides to join, or the weekday training thread.
Yo Andrew, welcome!
haha welcome! that would be the fatboy special delivered by none other than his majesty Jeff Owens!
welcome Andrew, see you on the road.
Welcome Andrew!
Andrew, I am also new and keen for a velocity-lite ride tomorrow morning. Let me know your plans.
New guys: Don't worry too much about the "death ride" posturing. It is to a certain extend breast beating. At the very least you should be able to hang with the group to the the top of Alpine Hill (where we generally stop and catch our breath and wait for stragglers), or to the NY state line, or at least learn what is required to do so. You shouldn't have to organize your own velocity-lite ride.
Hello!

My name is Kim, I joined the club about a week ago. I started cycling roughly five years ago and raced for three years in the pacific northwest collegiate circles. I haven't been riding much for the past year since my job has been a bit demanding; however, things have slowed down I am pretty excited to get going again.

@KimW, welcome aboard!
@KimW Welcome to Kissena! we look forward to seeing you on the road.
Welcome Kim!
Welcome aboard Kim.
Kim, I saw a female rider in a U of Washington kit in the park tonight - on the hill. I bet that was you?

Welcome. Our club was once thriving with women's racers - but we are sadly light as of now. This makes us especially glad to have you!

Haha yes, that was me! I am hoping to recruit a few other ladies, however I am still pretty new to NYC and don't know too many people yet!
Actually, I've got a question about how rides work around here, do people just post to the various forums when they're headed out, or are there standard weekly rides?
Hey Y'all! I joined a couple months ago, but am finally getting around to posting anything on here! I've been riding for what seems like forever. Haven't raced, or really even THOUGHT about it since I was in college ( some 20+ years ago I'm afraid )...but, now that I'm 40, and on the verge of fatherhood ( we're expecting our first in December! ) I figured, well, now's as good a time as any to at least JOIN...

Look forward to getting out and riding with you...and maybe dipping my toe in some 'Cross this Winter!

See Ya Soon!

Kim,
There are a several of ride-related thread on the forum:

Group Ride (Sat & Sun)
PP Weekday Morning Training
WEEKDAY River Road / Palisades / 9W rides
Prospect Park Weekday Riding
Weekly Friday Central Park 11am Ride

Some of these are more regular than others. Some are more seasonally active (e.g. Sat & Sun tends to be very active in the off season). If you browse these threads, you will get an idea of what goes on. I don't think we are so predictable as to just show up at some place without seeing confirmation on the forum.

If you click on the star next to any given thread, you will get an email whenever anyone posts to it.

@KimW short answer is all of the above. Some are regularly scheduled programming like the Sunday ride or JPs Friday ride. Others are more ad hoc based on schedules. 4 threads to watch. Friday CP ride thread, Sat/Sun Kissena Ride, Weekday jersey/ GWB thread and the PP weekday Morning training threads. That has 80% of the rides out there.

@mikebratton - welcome aboard. there are plenty of dads in the club. cross is entertaining to bring the family to.

@KimW - there are several standard rides. Tues, Weds & Thursday a group typically meets at Grand Army Plaza (GAP) at 6am (sometimes 5:45 if people are feeling particularly ambitious). Friday JP (aka mugwump) will ride in Central Park (CP) at 11am meeting at Tavern on the Green. On Sunday there is the club ride that meets at 8am at the Brooklyn Bridge (BB) and then 9am on the NJ side of the George Washington Bridge (GWB). There are also those that go out midweek and will usually post something on here either for Prospect Park (PP) or 9W rides in NJ. (I figure pointing out the acronyms may help if you are new to NYC)

Anyone else, am I missing anything?
@mikebratton congrats on the kid and joining Kissena. According to many of our memeber it seems sleep depravation and bicycle racing are natural companions.
@Dan Reiners Thanks a lot! And good to know!
