Prospect Park Relations, Road Sharing, etc

Hey All,

This month's update:

  • Jeff Apruzzese (ex Kissena) crashed into a pedestrian this weekend going down Vanderbuilt hill. Jeff was badly injured (see the injury thread) as was the pedestrian. No word yet on the consequences.
  • If you have to dial 911 in the park remember that emergency services know ONLY the entrances - so you either have to give them a street entrance or wait an ungodly time for them to find you
  • The parking lot by the old finish line is closed until October - daily numbers for cars there this winter were about 1/5th of total capacity.
  • Expect more bike police - the 78th has a strong preference for them as they are (no surprise) faster to get from A to B, quieter (they catch more bad guys) and healthier
  • Expect a new farmer's market at the Ocean Ave & Parkside entrance - this should not be anywhere near the roadway
  • New BBQ area expected on the east side - details to come
  • May 10th is a duathlon so heads up if you are training there
that is all. Road Sharing Task force to reconvene sometime in May.

Cheers,

J
This is kind of genius:

Nothing " kind of" about it
Getting closer:

The Prospect Park Alliance is conducting a survey and this would be a great way to suggest that they repave the roads and/or whatever you think.

The survey should only take you about two minutes to complete, but it isn’t going to be up for much longer. It closes on July 14.

cheers!

After yesterday's race, I want to spray paint penises on the road.

They have barely patched any hole since the winter.
Folks, please don't put riders ability to use Prospect Park in jeopardy by either riding in the pedestrian lanes or by riding backwards.

Similarly please don't do violate park rules while WEARING CLUB KIT

Thank you,

Jules
Kissena Cycling President
Do you really mean that those of us with fixed wheels cannot show our skills by riding backwards?
Maybe you mean don't ride around the park in an anti-clockwise direction ?

Forget about Sunday afternoon rides in the park this fall:

https://www.prospectpark.org/visit-the-park/park-map/places-to-eat/smorgasburg/

Also: Isn't this our super-secret CX practice location?

Any public timetable for the repaving of PP outer loop?
Wave hill is near to the CX practice location but not on top of it

The park is steadfast in putting responsibility for the road with DOT.
DOT has not committed to anything.

A 311 blitz would be sweet though.

Forget about Sunday afternoon rides in the park this fall:

Riding in the park on Sunday afternoons is no way to go through life, son. Talk to Jeff A for details.

In all seriousness, it's a super crowded time of day and nobody should be trying to train in the park then. It'll end in tears.
@Jules I agree 100%. If I ever have to do it, it's hardly "riding," and more "roll around in circles mindlessly easy without actually pedaling." That said, I figured I'd share this in case any one else gets the itch and wonders wtf is with all the people.

^understood. For the record that's exactly what Jeff A was doing - just an easy afternoon spin. I ran into him recently and he's looking at a full recovery, eventually.

All the potholes are gone...they've been filled with my hopes, dreams and latex tubulars.

You forgot tears.

We don't have that issue anymore, Charlie has that sump pump that drains it all out at 3am before the races!
FYI if you ever thought runner/cyclist tension was the hight of animosity in the park - you ain't seen anything compared to the Birders vs Drone operators.

Never cross the birders. They are serious people.
FDNY Training in Prospect Park:

Dear Community Committee members,

This email is to notify you that today, Thursday, December 3, and the two following Thursday’s (12/10 + 12/17), the FDNY will be conducting drills and training on-site at the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park. The training is expected to begin at 7pm, last about an hour, and will take place within the mechanical areas of the building. Some 36 uniformed firefighters in 6 trucks will be arriving and then departing the site and we therefore wanted you to know that what is happening is planned training, not an emergency.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Best,

James

I can just imagine the twitchers are going to really love 6 fire trucks and 3 dozen firefighters while the painted bunting is hanging around LeFrak center.
There's a petition going around about repaving Prospect Park.

You might consider sending it along, by following the included links:
http://nycc.org/message-board/support-effort-repave-prospect-park-loop/77635

--- I do confess, on a personal note, that I am bit concerned on the "fix it for the bicycles" tone of the note. But, as I'm unlikely to take the time to compose a more inclusive note, this might have to do.

cheers!
Agree with Eloy, sounds like a "fix it for the bicycles" tone, but should say "fix it for the bicycles so people don't go out of control and hit granny" as well (but don't actually use that quote)
^ that's a letter, not a petition. Check out those who signed...

the post suggest that the reader grabs and sends a similar version.

my comment stands, the "do it for the bicycles" tone could have easily been improved.

Don't disagree. It's Orcutt's initiative/copy.

I got a question this past weekend at a CX race. I don't know the answer. Any feedback from board members past/present?

Will there be spring series racing in Central Park this year?

Last I heard, Luke (KCC) and Vadar (CRCA) were teaming up to host CP open racing in 2016?
Myles was filing the permits for spring series last I heard.
