Jesse - I rented a nice road bike from http://www.blazingsaddles.com/san-francisco/locations
Their shop at 1095 Columbus Avenue is their "high end" shop. They had good bikes (alum or carbon, nice groupos). Every other shop all they have is Fred specials.
They didn't take reservations because they had crap tons of bikes. And a bunch of different pedal systems.
Call them and you could head out there with just your shoes and kit - it was really convenient.

This is for the old-timers. My wife and I were in Paris recently to take a short vacation and see some art (a short 3.5 hr TGV train ride from Geneva), and for one day I met up with Stéphen Geist for a spin outside of Paris. Kind of like the Paris equivalent of upstate. We rode through town, into the countryside, and then back into town and the nutty traffic. Stéphen was, as always, strong on the bike and generous with his time. It was great to catch up with a friend from NYC. This shot is from our 'muffin stop' (or apple pastry, in this case). Stéphen still has some of his old Kissena kit that he wears, though none of it was clean for this ride.

Fellas,
The constant yearning for weekend racing, 4am alarm calls and Konditori muffins became too much. So I am moving back. But not back to Brooklyn exactly; rather, my wife and I will in the next few weeks be moving to the Hudson Valley area (not too far in, likely around Hastings-on-Hudson / Tarrytown).
It's a shame I won't be able to join you for mid-week shenanigans anymore, but on the plus side I'll have spectacular riding on my doorstep. So, you know -- it's all good.
I am very excited to get back into it. I today ordered my orange POC, just so I can belong.

In my hometown of Christchurch NZ right now. Went riding up the Port Hills but couldn't get down to the port due to house sized boulders blocking the road (from the 2013 Quake). Nice riding here, 200 km's of hills anyone?

I can't remember which race it was, maybe down in Baltimore, in a diff't category, but there was a guy with sleeveless jersey. Which is clearly against the rules. So yeah, Fat Bike in a road race? What IS up with that?

It's a ride, not a race. We rolled out at about 20mph for the first hour. He hung on fine then. And then for another half hour or so. And then the pace got to be too much. Think he was doing a little dirt riding after, but then he was foiled by the downpour that hit. Or not.

Just back from family trip to Pyla in France. Dad managed to skive off for a few rides on the hundreds of kilometers of paved forest trail (took the pedals and shoes and rented the rest). The bike shop in Arcachon was pretty rad too. Great oysters, great spot.

Managed to get in some riding with a fellow Kissena here on Cape Cod
