I did receive a call from a friend who raced today (Willis Johnson of King Kog) who let me know that he forgot his pit wheels and jacket (and perhaps other pre-race warmth goodies. If there is any word on these items, please let me know so I can tell him what's what.

Bone tired.  Can barely lift my beer.  What an amazing weekend.

We were torn down, course cleaned, packed, fed and ready to hit the road by 6pm.  Whoa.

Supercross Cup was, by far, the most fun I've ever had on a bike. Myles, that was awesome. You've converted me to CX, and even though my race season is over, I can't wait to get out on those MTB trails with my 'cross bike. A HUGE thank you to all the Kissenas who helped put on Supercross, and to everyone who cheered me, encouraged me, coached me, held my jacket, pinned my numbers, let me borrow your helmets and gloves, and convinced me that hot chocolate is medicinal. You warmed my hands and my heart. 

So, the report...

Had just enough time for one warmup lap with guru @Gwynna and to develop my mantra for the morning (something like "holy shit this is scary!") and then the race was on! I muscled my way up half a dozen places before the hole shot, took some good inside corners, moved up a few more places before the first two climbs, shifted down, prepared to hammer... and then it was all a mess. A pileup forced me into my first ever cx race dismount. Mid-hill, after losing speed... it was ugly. Like, tourist burdened with an oversized backpack dismounting a CitiBike ugly. But I passed a few women, properly remounted, passed a few more women, bombed the grassy flats, properly dismounted for the barriers, passed through the black gate of Mordor, escaped the belly of the space slug, slew the jabberwocky, resisted the siren song, lost a shoe, recovered a shoe, and then remembered "Hey! I'm an NYC commuter! Get the hell outta my way!"

The rest was a blur of dirt and trees and black lycra punctuated by fluorescent accents. And then I biffed on the grassy flats on my third lap. Something happened... no clue what... and then I was on my head. Maybe the Stan's No Tubes girl clipped my shoulder when she passed? Or maybe I hit a root? I thought Stan's went down a bit further ahead, but apparently she didn't. All I know for sure is that I dropped my chain, cracked my helmet, and miraculously no one else passed me during the whole ordeal. 

With adrenaline pumping, I navigated the woods with more speed than I really should have, caught up with Stan's and another woman (let's call her "black kit with fluorescent accents #19") in the twists and turns before the final stretch, hollered for the inside line (which BKFA19 actually granted me, allowing me to pass her) and pumped my legs as fast as I could to catch Stan's for a sprint finish. Shifted down, down, down but my speed never went up, up, up. Having logged precisely 33.7 miles on my CX bike before Saturday, I was reluctant to shift into the big ring (the only thing my Apex der is reliable for is dropping my chain) so I watched Stan's finish about and then crossed 10 yards behind for a respectable 10th place . My first top 10 finish in a race that didn't involve a donut eating contest. Sweet!

On a day where warmth was a luxury, so was a warmup lap. @Gwynna and @Eragot took me through about a quarter of the course before hearing the final whistle for the W3/4 call-ups, at which point @Gwynna and I floored it and arrived in the nick of time. @Aaron and @Kayt helped me with a lightening-speed jacket/glove/number/glove/bike handoff, and then it was on!

Not much luck moving up before the hole shot today. On the warmup, @Gwynna encouraged me to hammer, knowing that I could make some good time up the initial climbs, but I was blocked out of every single line I attempted and resorted to some sneaky cornering on the gentle grass hills before the woods. Speaking of which, those woods were somehow scarier than Saturday's wooded section and followed by some rooted off-canter turns. Jesus, Myles! I'm surprised you didn't throw in a pit of sharpened bamboo. 

I hadn't pre-ridden anything after the woods, so I took the first lap with a balance of speed and caution, learning the course and trying to making up time on the flats and staircase. And remembering to shoulder my bike instead of holding it out like a matador. I caught up with @Gwynna before the final two downhills and I we both realized I have (had!) zero CX downhill experience. So @Gwynna floored it. It took me another half lap to catch up with her again!

Seriously, I am immensly proud of the efforts of everyone this weekend. It was amazing to see such a talented group of people come together and make this happen. From stylish Nelson (scarf in a race) to Erika's first race, to my new friend Jeremy (my hematoma on my thigh), this weekend represented everything that makes Kissena great. Great support for each other, support for the community and most of all fun.
