Right, Grehan got 4th in the first race and then 6th in the last race. Hardman award for the day.
Exciting racing all around. At least 6 top ten's for Kissena today and many others kicking Race Predictor's ass.

Some photos from today; sorry I didn't get everyone; I'll try for more tomorrow. Good times indeed. I worked the pit for Garrigan and I have to say it was pretty nerve wracking. He had it in the bag until a tiny bobble near the end; he had to burn a match to make up for it which left him juuuuust a little short for the sprint.
I'll probably join you guys at worlds now though

Cat 4 killers! After the final pros crossed the line (Garrigan took 2nd, losing a sprint to an on-form Dan Timmerman), about 35 cat 4s clustered around the starting zone. Myles had crafted quite possibly the most interesting course possible on a decidedly nondescript piece of land somewhere between the land of $15 showers and empty baseball fields. Many of the hundreds of Staten Islanders whose entries got flipped to Supercross were no-shows.
Call-ups done the right way (crossresults rankings) put 3 or so Kissenas on the front row. The others were not too far behind. All in all, we had de Baca, Katzman, Grehan, Smolarski, Bertucco, Sanossian, Zolan and then, I might be a total idiot, but two guys who I'm confident I didn't see wearing Kissena kits, and yet are listed as "Kissena" in James Gironta and David Thompson. Apologies if I'm an idiot. I just don't really know who these guys are--although Gironta's name seems more familair.
At the hole shot Bertucco and de Baca were in prime position. de Baca got stronger, Bertucco sucked stinky monkey-toes and faded, stopped to pull a large tree branch from his derailleur (on what was possibly, the "cleanest," smoothest courses all year). Grehan, Katzman rode strong, finding their way into the top 10. In the end, the results looked like this:

hats off to de Baca, Katzman and Grehan. They all did well.
There has to be another award for @Alyoshas. First he asks Marc and me how to shift Shimano. At the call up, Whitey tells him he's strong and should get to the front and he begins moving up and we tell him he can do that after the race has started. Finally, after the race he tells me and Joaquin that he was riding in road shoes and pedals.

Although it had been raining most of the afternoon, 27 riders rolled up for the last race of the day (Cat 4). I came back to race the 4s this afternoon (4th race in 2 days). Got a good start but the guy in third place slipped out in the mud within the first 30 seconds of the race forcing me and a few others to come to complete stop while 25 riders or so passed us! Damn. I think that is when Konrad slingshotted to the front. He rode well.
Picked my way back up through the field and could see Konrad was riding strong up ahead. The last section of off camber climbing before the pavement had become SUPER slippery. Unlike this morning, guys were sliding out all over (including yours truly until I figured out the best line was at the bottom near the tape). I was able to dispatch some King Kog and Cicli Devotion guys that were fighting for spots with me and managed a healthy 7th. Aly came in 14th. He is going to do well in CX when he learns the ropes a bit more. David placed a respectable 23rd.
That was fun.. Nice way to end the cross season.

Major props to Myles, Joshua, Mike, Todd and all the others who volunteered countless hours to making Supercross a possibility.
While I know a number of club members helped out any way they were able, there were very few club members around to help when it came time to take down the course. I am not getting on a high horse as I was only able to help for an hour or so after the last race and others like Todd, Marc, Konrad and Joshua (with one hand) worked in the rain and in the dark.
I bring it up because we have a large club and I suspect that Myles could have used several more helping hands at different points leading up to and during the weekend. I know there were several posts to the forum asking for volunteers, but perhaps the club leadership and Myles could brainstorm ways of either requiring or incentivising helping out with races etc. I am not pretending to know the solution, but if Kissena is going to be associated with (are we a sponsor? promoter? what?) a UCI race like Supercross a greater number of club members will need to make time to contribute to its success.
Having said that, this is my opinion and Mike or Myles may think differently. I'll get off my soapbox now.

I actually think having mandatory marshalling/volunteering like CRCA wouldn't be the worst idea. We're a big enough club that it might be worth it.

I had such a great time, and such hard races! cyclocross is cool as hell and this was the perfect event to get my start I think: great people, straightforward course and I got to see professionals riding the same course I rode but at blistering speeds and making it look effortless. They ride with so much confidence, it's astonishing. I also got to race 3 times and the last race in the cat4s was definitely the hardest because of the weather and ppl taking spills left and right. I also test rode 3 sets of cleats thanks to Dan Hubbard and Marc Bertucco for lending me their gear. The crankbrothers eggbeaters were hard to clip in but nonetheless beat look keo pedals and road sidi's any day of the week.
I took a pretty bad spill while on Robert Mecea's wheel in the B race early that day as I slid in the mud and caught the metals barriers we were riding alongside of in the straight; it was pretty brutal but I'll live and I managed to not get caught by the guy behind me so not too disappointed.
Cleaning up the course and wrapping everything up was tough in the cold and i didn't have a change of clothes which is pretty dumb but I've learned my lesson. Great effort by Myles, Mike, Josh, Todd and the rest of KCC for putting this together: I'm gonna try to make it a point to do it next year as well.
tata for now, I'm gonna count cyclocrossers jumping over hurdles and get to bed.

In the long run, this way of doing things is not sustainable, you are right. We do need to think about the answer. Part of the problem was I bit off a bit more than I could chew, next year I won't try to organize registration and volunteer efforts. I did kinda a mediocre job of both.
I probably should have assigned really specific volunteer slots to people and pushed more people to stay late on Sunday. The problem wasn't lack of volunteers, it was lack of volunteers in the right time slot. If giving comp'd entries to Kissena racers will convince them to stay until course breakdown, we can explore that area. I think one thing that is amazing about kissena is that folks will just pitch in because this sport is awesome and they want it to happen. I think we may also want to consider hiring 3-4 day laborers at the end of Sunday. Seriously.
All said, it was a great race. It's amazing how smoothly this thing comes together now. Way more so than last years. We actually know what we are doing!
BTW - not to ignore the other volunteers, but HUGE thanks to Josh and his finance Alice who basically ran registration with only 2.5 combined hands. We owe her a big thank you.

I think day laborers is the ticket. I mean, this year, I did what I could. Setup on Friday, Course setup on Saturday with Luka pitching in. But at some point, I have other responsibilities that I just can't get out of. I suspect, so do many others.
The day laborers makes a great deal of sense because while you can try to assign people jobs, the fact of the matter is that you need to get there. Marshaling in Central park for people that live in the city is pretty easy to get to. It's a different story to go to the suburbs.
The course breakdown is always the hardest thing to get help at. My fingers are still tingly from the weekend's cold...

@ Mike, Myles, Josh & co you guys did an awesome job. The combination of solid marshaling (results Posted online in 15 minutes!) experience, a sweet venue and good old fashioned KCC hammering really shone through.

I lined up in the back, yelled "ready, set, go" and the group was off. Trailing behind JP a the back, there was little room on the up / down turns. Eventually I passed JP on the first straight and then entered the "S" turns and there was another pass. Straightaway saw no more passing and then Myles was down. A split. Marc caught behind. I surged to get across. More slow sections, no passing.
As the course headed off around the mini-golf course, there was an opportunity to really open it up. I gave it gas and there were still three ahead - Perlberg, Todd and Handsome Joe. As the group of three headed towards the barriers, I came up to Handsome and Perlberg as Todd came off. I didn'tr slow to join the group, but kept hammering by.
After a lap of chasing, Handsome caught I, having shed Perlberg. As the bell
lap started, it was Handsome following I. After a brief pause, I put in a
blistering attack into the headwind and up a hill. The gap was created.
Handsome kept the gap steady, but when the barriers came, it was goodnight.
using grecian formula like slickness, I shouldered the bike to cruise through
the barriers like the greasy mus. Although Handsome kept the pressure up, I
cruised in after that.
Nice work by Joe to get to the front of the race. JP gets kudos for fighting up to thid. Todd hung on for fourth.
What a blast. We need more laps next year.
